Part One Instructions-Prewriting: Complete this assignment by utilizing your chosen portfolio topic. As the first part of your Critical Thinking Assignment for this module, open a new Word document and title it Prewriting, Summarizing, and Paraphrasing. Without passing any judgment on your own ideas, generate a list of ideas and/or questions (to research more information about). Put this list of ideas in these heading categories:

• Background of the Problem
• Needs (reasons why the budget needs to be decreased but services need to remain the same)
• Proposed Ideas (how to balance the budget and still keep the same services)
• Benefits (for the university and its students)
• Implementation (actions recommended)
• Recommendation (summary and conclusion).

Your task is to summarize at least four paragraphs from the source you cited in the Module 2 Critical Thinking Assignment into no more than two sentences, using no direct quotations. Remember to cite your source using proper APA formatting.

Part Three Instructions-Paraphrasing: As the third part of your Critical Thinking Assignment for this module, open the Word document titled: Prewriting, Summarizing, and Paraphrasing and add the “Paraphrasing” title. Your task is to paraphrase each individual sentence below.

PART 1

Work friendships are often tenuous and can depend on the quality of one’s productivity in the workplace environment. When the work suffers, then the friendship can quickly turn volatile. Sociologists often report that people will more likely fake their friendships at work not to upset their career prospects (Vernon, p. 27).

In at least 350 words total, please answer each of the following, drawing upon your reading materials and your personal insight. Please be sure that you do not provide names of people or identifying characteristics of the workplace.

• To what extent do you personally agree with the sociologist’s findings and distrust the sincerity of your work colleagues?
• What has been your own experience with enacting friendships of utility and/or feigning friendship in order to secure your employment or future career prospects? Do you believe this is ethical? Explain your answer.

PART 2

Research indicates that friendships at work increase productivity and overall job satisfaction. Additionally, employees are more likely to believe they are well-paid. Those who share friendships at work are more likely to share ideas, be innovative and feel like their work has real meaning and purpose (p. 17). Yet, Vernon posits that in the workplace, we often experience a pseudo-intimacy, whereby “colleagues can know so much about each other but can care so little” (Vernon, p. 15).

• To what extent does having friendships in the workplace impact your own level of job satisfaction?

Benefits and Limitations of Strategic Planning

Strategic planning refers to the process of defining future goals in an organization and determining the required resources for achieving them (Micheli and Manzoni 469). In business, there is different strategic planning; for instance, business plan and market plan. In practice, it is always prudent to engage stakeholders of the business in the strategic plan since their views may play a significant role in ensuring the success of the business. Although strategic planning is beneficial to the business, it still has considerable drawbacks. Therefore, evaluation of the benefits and limitations of strategic planning will uncover the available options, set priorities, and define methods to achieve them.

Strategic planning provides management with the direction to run its operations. In order to succeed, managers need a guide that will direct their day-to-day decisions in the business. Moreover, a manager needs a platform that will help him or her evaluate the progress and the dynamism of the business. To achieve these goals, each manager needs to have a well-established strategic plan.

Strategic planning promotes wise decisions making in an organization. Unlike organizations that do not have an effective plan, organizations that have an effective plan do give departmental managers a platform to brainstorm and come up with practical and logical ideas that will improve the overall productivity of the business (Chae and Hill 547).

Strategic planning has several limitations that can adversely affect the operations of an organization. For instance, strategic planning can cause financial problems that may end up threatening the success of an organization (Ryals and Rogers 215). Strategic planning is relatively expensive in terms of time, human resource, and financial resource. In most cases, financial problems may become a burden to an organization if the organization has not laid down the right infrastructure to accommodate these costs. Therefore, it is imperative for organizations to ensure that they are stable before engaging themselves in strategic planning.

Strategic planning is also a challenging task that requires a creative way of thinking to process ideas. Unfortunately, many people are not suited for creative thinking, which makes it hard for all organizations to succeed. Therefore, strategic planning offers guidance and direction only according to what people think (Micheli and Manzoni 469).

To sum up, it is important to acknowledge that strategic planning is an essential exercise for organizational management. Since it is not easy to predict the future, it is always critical to come with an effective strategic plan, as an organization will be avoiding risks of uncertainties and overspending. However, it is also important to consider the various limitations that are related to strategic planning as it will help a manager to weigh the benefits and the limitations of the process.

learning activity stuff In the last few modules, we have been discussing the evolution of empires and kingdoms in Europe, but it’s important to remember that there were political changes occurring throughout the globe at this time. Not only did empires develop in India, but China was also moving towards larger geographic unification. This was not an easy or straight forward process.

As you will see in this module, the Qin, while much maligned by contemporaries, were willing and able to do what it took to create a unified China. Under the guidance of Qin Shi Huangdi, the Qin created homogeneity (or, uniformity) in weights, measures, writing, laws and much more.

Due to their brutal methods, the Qin Dynasty would be short lived. However, without the unified base created by the Qin, the Han likely would never have maintained the long-running, relatively stable dynasty they were able to build immediately following the Qin Dynasty.

The Research Paper. 

You will write a 5-6page ORIGINAL, ANALYTICAL research paper.  In this paper, you will choose an event from the last 100 years that addresses a why question, or which seeks to explain an outcome of some significance over the last 100 years.  The paper must be based on at least 3-5 primary sources that offer insight into the question; three scholarly books and four scholarly articles.  The research question and argument must be laid out clearly and  should give a sense of how you will prove your argument.

The topic question is “Why did the US invade Iraq in 2003?”

You should organize your paper in:

1.  a clear introduction that presents the puzzling event/issue that you will explain and states your argument in brief;

2.  supporting sections with evidence that develops your argument and considers alternative explanations, and;

3.  a conclusion that summarizes your arguments and illustrates its significance (answering the “so-what” question). 

All papers must be typed, in 12 point type, New Times Roman font, double spaced, MINIMUM MARGINS OF 1 INCH ON ALL SIDES.  All writing assignments should have an argument put forward by you.  Ideally, they should address a “why” question and have a thesis statement (an argument that answers why something happened for example). 

Be very careful about writing a paper that simply summarizes the contents of the primary sources.  Of course, you will have to understand the documents and briefly present an overview of them, but your assignment is to explain and interpret the evidence (documents).  Additionally, beware of gushing or ranting about your documents. Don’t simply assert or suggest your views. Instead, prove and demonstrate them.

•  Aim for 1000-1200 words. You may exceed 1200 words, but you may not fall below the minimum. Essays below 1000 words will not be assigned a peer editor.

Topics are open and are very wide. You can choose to write on any literary work on the planet (earth only, pls). Alternately, you may write on a film.  You will relate the work on which you choose to write to one of three readings assigned for class (below).

The total number of works you will discuss in your essay will be TWO—the class reading choice and your outside choice.   Your essay should emphasize your outside choice; it will be your primary focus.  You should not write a complete analysis of either of the works you choose; pick two or three relevant passages/characters/speeches from your outside choice that exemplify a theme in one of the class reading choices. Key words here:  limit yourself!

The following suggestions are not a comprehensive list of possible choices; these don’t even scratch thesurface.

I mean for this list to be helpful rather than intimidating, but I realize that there’s such a thing as “too many choices.” If you find yourself overwhelmed by the options here, go back to square one: decide which class reading work you wish to use (Plato/Lottery/Gimpel) and then narrow your outside choices (below) to 2-3. PLATO’S “ALLEGORY OF THECAVE”

Relate Plato’s cave to another work of literature or film, drawing specific analogies between thetwo.

One concentration might be to show how a character’s path to enlightenment/epiphany follows the same general arc as does Plato’s released prisoner. You will show how a character begins as innocent or ignorant (in chains in the cave) and how the character metaphorically “sees the light” outside of the cave (revelation or epiphany).  The character will not necessarily try to convince others to see the world in a new way, but make sure that you clarify what the character has learned and how he/she haschanged.

Many sci-fi and fantasy works deal in alternate realities, in fact, but keep in mind that the separate realities must be within the work, not between your “reality” and that of the literature/film. In other words, a character within the work must questioning, “what is real?”

I found the definitions of “holy fool” online to vary rather widely; if you prefer, you may bypass the formal definition and define Gimpel and similar characters in your own way.
