Comprehensive Professional Growth Plan for applying performance based assessment

Comprehensive professional growth plan is aligned to improving and developing the quality of education and diversity of students produced. Professional development plans are focused in the areas of student achievement and instructional programs designed to meet the individual needs of the diverse student population. The most applicable strategies in developing a comprehensive growth plan will be a combination of observation, collaborative reflection, and performance evaluation.

A performance schedule is developed for all the staff members as a way to ensure that they are actively involved in the achievement of the goals and vision of the school. I will observe teachers as they offer lessons to students while they will also be required to present an overview of the work they do throughout the course. Meeting will frequently be held with the staff members to assess the performance and identify areas that need improvement. A one-year assessment of the teacher starting in August will be done according to the strategies used in teaching them their application of the appropriate curriculum and its improvement of the performance of students is also assessed (Kim et al., 2014). The outcomes from the assessment will then be used to carry out the comprehensive strategies in improving their performance and rewarding them.

Performance lists for the students will also be used to inform the effectiveness of the adapted strategies. Each teacher is required to evaluate the given strategies, their strengths, weakness and challenges they encounter in the process of offering education to the students (Kim et al., 2014). Meetings will be held between teachers from the different levels to speak about their problems in the different situation of engaging in improvement activities. More so, I will send surveys to parents to enquire about the new assessment and its effects on their children as an evaluation measure.

August: Recruit, attract, develop, and retain highly qualified staff to carry out the teaching in Fairhill and building mission, vision, values and goals of the school. I will recruit highly qualified Staff by implementing this goal after communicating the vision of our school. September: Acquire resources to empower and inspire students on how to embrace the performance based assessments. The school management and building-level stakeholders will engage in a collaborative, data-driven process to evaluate and plan the school and building resources that support student learning through continuous improvement, the meetings will discuss in detail what it takes to support each student with a special need and how to make their learning more efficient. These will also encompass events that will help specialized groups be incorporated in the school system and feel as part of it and that they are playing a role in the overall performance of the school. For example, first year teachers, mentor and coaches will attend cohesion seminars to facilitate bonding and hence learning.

October: Integrate the parents and guardians in promoting technology and assessment of the performance based assessment method of learning. Parents and guardians will fill out questionnaires and give their feedback on. Also, parents and guardians will receive training in the continuous classroom improvement process and the Google classrooms so that they can mentor and help their children at home to and have a better understanding of the concept. They will also monitor and evaluate the progress of their children in school. These will happen for all parents whose children are enrolled in Fairhill school. This will make the parents more involved in their children’s academic improvement and life development.

November: All certified and support staff will be trained in continuous improvement and show evidence of how learning cycles are used to support student learning and department/program effectiveness. These will be done monthly to review consolidate the skills. Holding training sessions and fun activities which will review the PBAs and their general impact other than the improvement in academics and grades these will enable raising of a holistic generation that is diversified and technologically able to achieve and implement goals in organizations that they will work for.

December: The school will retain a highly qualified staff and attract top notch talent by; continually evaluating the ability to offer employees excellent experiences in areas such as compensation, resources, working conditions, and recognition in an effort to promote a positive, student-centered climate and culture. I will review and emphasize on how to attract and retain highly qualified teachers. I will give the employees a questionnaire every three months to evaluate their level of satisfaction. Moreover, implement a revised teacher and administrator evaluation model that meets state and federal requirements while fostering continuous improvement and student outcome reflection. This will make learning more efficient, global and informative for the students, hence achieving improved success. Furthermore, the fairhill elementary school as the school’s website, social media pages and email platforms provide a variety of technological resources, that not only improve learning in the classrooms, but also for advertising and recruiting teachers and other staff members who will enhance a more complete learning process.

May: Review the level of learning process that is we wanted to be careful not to “teach to the test” in preparing students for the performance-based assessment. We need to strike a balance between teaching the content (e.g., probability given two independent events) and preparing students for the task (e.g., interpreting the validity of a media resource). We brainstormed six different formative assessments that would need to be in place before students completed the performance task. However, we also acknowledged that this part of our plan would need to be constantly reviewed and revised depending on student learning needs.

June: Organize and analyze the data I collected from the reviews and evaluations, decide on the most appropriate type of graph to display this information in a way which supports arguments given and observe the trends and draw conclusions. These will help the superintendent and the management as a whole make decisions that will change organizational progress.

July: Use the information and conclusions drawn to make a recommendation on how to further improve and implement the technology and improve the performance based assessments. The recommendations will inspire the change of policies to better align them with the vision and mission of the school and achieve a better performance.

Implementing the above plan will positively impact on uptake of technology and Google classrooms and also on the use of performance based assessments in Fairhill school. By the end of the year, I expect that short-term goals of change will be achieved. However, consistency will be a major consideration to allow the plan to take charge within two years.

BEFORE GOING ANY FURTHER, let’s define intrinsic and extrinsic.The Accelerated Motion website defines these in relation to dance very clearly:

• Intrinsic elements include everything you can discern from observing the dance.
• Extrinsic elements include any contextual information, interpretation, or evaluation the observer brings to viewing such as “They are wearing clothes from the 1980s” (depends on observer’s previous knowledge); “They are happy” (interpretation); or “They are terrific dancers” (evaluation). Extrinsic factors enable us to make connections, put information in context, and make judgments.

View the clips of Adowa, Sabar, and Masai (see Lesson 6 Viewings) and write down as many intrinsic elements as you can about each of the three dance forms. If you say, “They are terrific dancers,” look at the intrinsic elements that perhaps made you say that; for example, “They are jumping high and performing rhythmic footwork.” As you watch, create your lexicon. The Adowa
dances show an intrinsic element in the way the performers move their
feet in many different directions but to the beat of the music and sway
slightly side to side, while occasionally using their shoulders but very
little distal arm movement. Their hands hold up their dress as they
quickly move their feet with purpose and strength. The Masai
dance choreography mainly involves a line of performers standing side by
side and taking turns stepping out of line and jumping up and down
multiple times. No other body movements are involved besides the spring
of their legs into the air and the occasional bend in the knee until
they land flat footed on the ground. The dancers are very light on their
feet as they bound in to the air and are very rhythmic to their
movements. The Sabar choreography involves very quick and
dramatic movements, with very fast pace knee raises and feet kicking
around, in the air and on the ground. They twirl around wildly and fast
while their bodies are light on the ground yet move freely.
At
first glance these dancers were like nothing I have every seen before.
The choreography s very unique and very particular to the culture and
music. Adowa dancing seems very particular to the music playing
and just flowing to the rhythm. The dances seem to take place at local
gatherings and festivals so they must be specific to the culture and
celebrations. The Masai dance seems to resemble their culture,
which might involve a lot of hunting, so the choreography of jumping
high would relate to physical ability and masculinity of those who are
physically strong and able to hunt and provide for their family. The Sabar
dance discuss how the dance resembled sexuality but it was unique
because the culture was very closely located to a city where sexuality
is not openly flaunted and shown, especially in front of the entire
town. The dances mainly involved women and their performance of skill
and fluid movement that might appeal to a significant other. All of
these dance forms were very unique but once studied closer, have a more
clear projection of their purpose.

Identify the most favored and least favored shift schedules in the U.S. for police personnel. Explain the advantages and disadvantages of those three that are the most prominent. 

Most favored schedule in the US is noted as the (5 -2 [8]) work schedule which means that you work 8 hours a day for 5 days with 2 days off.  This schedule provides for a set schedule and having enough ‘down time’ to be able to relax and sleep.  The disadvantages with this schedule may only be that if you want more time off it must be taken from annual or sick leave. The general times for this schedule range around 6a-2p, 2p-10p, 10p-6a with variations depending on the specific agencies. In some agencies, additional schedules may be implemented if it is noticed that an increase in criminal activity revolves around certain schedules, this is called overlapping and would look as such, having an additional schedule in the evening that covers the times around midnight when bars are closing (10p – 6a) might also have a shift that came in from (7p – 3a) (Peak et al, 2010, p. 302).

Least favored schedule in the US is  noted as the (4 -3 [10]) work schedule which means that you work 10 hours a day for 4 days with 3 days off. This schedule provides more days off but the work times are longer. Despite some officers preferring this schedule, the percentage of those agencies that currently use it is only 27.2% (Peak et al, 2010, p. 302).

Compare permanent shifts versus rotating, including advantages and drawbacks of both.

Police agencies do not have the luxury of taking days off. Their responsibility is to ensure and protect the public’s safety at all times of the day and night.  Accomplishing this responsibility forces every agency to work both day and night, which for some can be a challenge.  The human body is designed with an ‘internal clock’ known as its circadian rhythm, which tells us that day time is for being awake and night time is for sleeping.  This rhythm inherently conflicts with police work because if you work a rotating shift you will have to work night time shifts on a regular interval. As Peak et al (2010) tells us,

‘The majority of officer’s work rotating shifts or at night, which means drowsiness and fatigue are a way of life. According to one study, 90 percent of officers reported driving on duty while drowsy; one-fourth said they had actually fallen asleep while at the wheel. This is obviously a problem that cannot be ignored—particularly if an officer has shift work sleep disorder (SWSD), and experiences problems falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up.’ (Peak et al, 2010, p. 304)

Because of the psychological and physiological effects that rotating shift can have on someone, perhaps permanent shifts may be better, as, if you are permanently on day shift (6-2, 7-3, 8-4) then you will have your relax and down time during your body’s normal down time phase (evening – night). The main advantage to rotating shift is that if officers want to experience their environment at a different time of the day, to experience the variations of activity, this would be a good way to do it.

The most basic advantage to permanent shift schedules are their simplicity. There is no figuring out whose turn it is to switch shifts and officers do not have to re-adjust their bodies sleep schedule on a regular basis. There is also more ease of schedule court appearances and the scientific proof that officers prefer permanent shifts over rotating (Peak et al, 2010, p. 305).

What is the role of police unions in shift scheduling?

No matter what shift schedule an agency uses there are laws and unions that have a say in the decision making process of which type of schedule is used and protecting the officers well – being to ensure their productivity while on duty. As a way to ensure sufficient pay for law enforcement officers, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) that was initiated in the 1930’s to protect the rights and working conditions of employees in the private sector, brought law enforcement under its umbrella in 1985 via congress.  This forced agencies to pay not time (hourly wage) and a half overtime, if officers worked beyond 40 hours, but also a second overtime if the officer went past 43 hours in a 7 day time frame, including K-9 units and equestrians (horses) (Peak et al, 2010, p. 305/6). This protection, although subsequently deemed ‘a nightmare’ by many agencies, protected officers from being forced to work beyond reasonable hours, for basic pay. Police unions, in this process, protect the police officers (human, canine & equestrian) and make sure that all benefits are provided and reinforced during contract negotiations.

What impact does shift work have on family members? Do you think family should be considered in making decisions regarding which shift an officer should be employed on? Why or why not?

I take this question on a personal note. My father who is a retired Baltimore City Police Detective Sergeant – Vice Squad spent his entire career working rotating shifts (8-4, 4-12, 12-8). I saw him come and go at various times of the day, I saw him sleep in the very early mornings after working all night and I asked him one time, “how can you sleep with sunshine pouring through the window?”, and he said to me “it’s not normal but it’s my job and there are days when I can barely think while I’m going to work, but I do it and I don’t complain because it was my decision to do this for my family”. Rotating shifts are difficult for the officer and their family. The varying schedule messed with their body, their brain, and yes their moods, which all affect their family and relationships.  My father’s rotating shift was for 28 days at a time (1 month), and every 28 – days he changed his shift. The best shift for him was day shift (8-4) it was the shift that felt most normal and helped his mood and allowed us to spend time with him. The worst shift for him was midnight (12-8) because he saw us for about 2 hours a day of which was evening hours when us kids were usually otherwise occupied.  Should families be considered in making decisions regarding which shift an officer should be employed on? Yes.  An officer has family, even if it is just parents that they talk to and relax with and when you take an officers physical and psychological energy away from them, there is no communication, there is simply a shell. Years after my father retired he said to me, “I missed you kids growing up and I wish I could have worked a set schedule”.

Mr Marriott, my math teacher for all four years in high school, was a very demanding teacher. He expected perfection in all daily assignments in all courses, from intermediate algebra to college algebra. Assuming that we had all learned to add subtract, multiply and divide in the lower grades, he tolerated no inaccurate calculations. The smallest error always cost us four points our of a possible ten, and using the wrong formula was the quickest way to get an F. But he did not accept memorized formulas. Instead, he expected every student to understand the principle behind the formula, to know when to use it, and to know how to use it. We had to analyze the problems and gather the data necessary to reach the correct conclusions. The more math courses Itook from Mr. Marriott, the more demanding he became. In tenth grade he required extensive collateral reading for plane geometry. He would explain some principle in class, then give us extra reading which covered this same principle. Once a week he would write formula on the blackboard and list the books where we could find information about it. Everybody did the reading because in a couple of days he might give us a quiz on this material. Sometimes at the end of class he would give us a list of supplemental readings on whatever we had been discussing. In my final math course, college algebra, Mr. Marriott assigned several research papers. Sometimes he would make specific assignment like “Formulate an equation for a circle in 3-dimension” or “Write a short paper on some math genius,” or he would let us choose from a list of subjects. All of these papers were due a couple of days after they were assigned. In my final course Mr Marriott required a research paper of 500 words or more. We could choose any topic related to mathematics. I chose mathematical logic and wrote about symbolic logic. I did not realize the full value of this paper until the next year in college when I took a course in logic that covered most of the material in my paper. Though we sometimes thought Mr. Marriott was too strict, we learned a lot of mathematics.
