Tips for Writing a Good Paper:

–Outline your answer before you begin writing.  If you don’t know how you’re going to answer the question, don’t start writing yet.

–Don’t make large, windy introductory statements (eg. “the question of democracy has been debated for millennia”).  Start by immediately and clearly asserting your thesis. 

–Your paper should start with a thesis and then lead me through your reasoning in a clear, logical manner so as to convince me that you’re right.

–Structure your paper according to the outline you’ve written.  One good way to structure your paper is to think of two or three reasons why you’re right and then devote one paragraph to each reason.

–Be sure you cite from the text in order to support your points, and be sure that you explain the quotations you pull from the text.

–A great paper will conclude not by summarizing the paper, but by indicating the wider significance of the claim you’re defending.

Developing safer communities is a concern every community leader should have. Sadly this is not the case more often than not the political leader say they care, however actions speak louder than words. The police management differs in their opinion on safe communities when compared to the rank and file of a department; so how is a safer community created. Fortunately there is a process in place for this. The process consists of four steps. The first step is to poll the public; with this the law enforcement is seeking direct feedback from their community.  For the next step the opinions of the officers in the departments are polled.  “The poll should seek to determine what the officer’s think about the effectiveness and efficiency of the department; How would the officers allocate resources and personnel if they had the power” (DeLord, R., & Sanders, J. 2006). The third step in this process is to conduct on audit on the department, here is when an outside agency audits the performance on the department to locate problem within the agency. The last step in this process is the have the labor and management build a coalition in support of a shared vision. This is necessary for success; if the both sides cannot agree on the vision this entire process will fail. 

  One challenge I can predict is the unwillingness of officers to participate in the process. I would fear as a union leader that I would not receive the honest feedback form member necessary. Another issue I can see is police officers resenting the audit. I fell this would built an extra amount of tension for the department, and if implemented poorly would further strain the relationship between labor and management.

One of the biggest complaints among managers is the huge amount of time they have to spend in meetings. Ideally the purpose of meetings is to put everyone’s heads together to solve a problem or make a decision. But far too often they can lead to unproductive, time-wasting conversations and even conflict.

For this assignment, think about some recent meetings you’ve attended where a significant decision had to be made. Think carefully about how some of the problems regarding group decision making that were discussed in the background readings apply to what you’ve experienced. Then write a 2- to 3-page paper addressing the following issues:

1. Are all voices equally heard, or are some people afraid to speak up? Are participants in the meeting afraid to contradict senior management?
2. Is time spent at the meetings productive, or is a lot of time wasted?
3. Are the decisions that are made solid ones? Or do they suffer from problems mentioned in the background materials such as groupthink?
4. Are ideas expressed at meetings creative and original, or are original ideas discouraged?
5. Based on what you’ve described in Questions 1–4 above, what kind of group decision-making process would you recommend be used in meetings you attend? Base your answer on readings from the background materials such as Rao (2009), Bolland and Fletcher (2012), and Sims (2002).

In the assigned article, “Core Principles & Values of Effective Team-Based Health Care”(https://www.nationalahec.org/pdfs/VSRT-Team-Based-Care-Principles-Valures.pdf) the authors state that “the incorporation of multiple perspectives in health care offers the benefit of diverse knowledge and experience; however, in practice, shared responsibility without high-quality teamwork can be fraught with peril.” Describe the perils that the authors say lead to uncoordinated care and unnecessary waste and cost. Final Research Project

The topic of your project needs to be a contemporary societal problem, such as healthcare reform, immigration reform, privacy rights, euthanasia, First Amendment Rights, stem cell research, capital punishment, corporate prisons, legalizing drugs, ageism, animal rights, cloning, prayer in schools, racial profiling, recycling/conservation, sexism, outsourcing jobs, workplace bullying, etc. The topic must focus on a single aspect, as in “How far do corporations intrude into the private lives of their employers?” or “The social costs of financing the distribution of custom-designed drugs.” You may suggest another topic to use, but the instructor must approve the topic during the Week Two Discussion.

The Final Research Project will present research relating the responsibilities of a critical thinker to contemporary society. In this assignment, you will do the following:

• Research one aspect of a contemporary social problem.
• Define the problem.
• Propose a possible solution for the problem.
• Create an argument that supports your thesis position. You should take on the perspective of a critically thinking researcher. The argument must present a thesis statement and evidence to support the thesis statement.

Research and Define the Problem
You must take on the perspective of your major field of study and explain in your paper what that perspective is and how it informs your view of the topic. The topics listed above are far too broad to write about in 10–12 pages (3,300–3,900 words). Instead, you must choose a narrowly defined thesis and approach it from the perspective of your field.

Example: If you are an economics major, and you are interested in immigration reform, you should approach a very specific aspect of immigration reform through the lens of economic theory and practice. A specific thesis question would not be, “How does illegal immigration influence the U.S. economy?” One could write thousands of pages on such a topic. Instead, a better question would be, “How do illegal immigrant hotel workers in Chicago impact the economy of Northern Illinois?” You would then want to do the research and determine the positive and negative impacts they have, ultimately trying to conclude how illegal immigration in this area should be approached ethically.

How to Hone Your Thesis: It is important that you start your research early in this course. Try to find the most important contemporary questions and theories in your field of study and then align the most important questions with a very specific aspect of the general topics above. For example, if you are a psychology major, you might want to start thinking within the realm of healthcare reform or aspects of mental health and criminality in the prison system.

Your Argument
You must present a complete argument, including a major claim with at least five points of evidence, information, or data that will prove the claim.

• The thesis statement must be
  • A clear, simple declarative sentence as the first or last sentence in the opening paragraph of the essay.
  • Of such a nature that it can be substantiated, corroborated, verified, and proved through appeal to primary or secondary academic research source materials.
• The introductory paragraph must
  • Present the thesis statement, an explanation for the importance of the topic, and its relation to the student’s field of study.
• Beliefs, opinions, and personal opinions must not be introduced at any point in the essay.
• All beliefs and opinions should be supported with academic evidence. Sweeping generalizations with no supporting academicevidence do not reflect adequate critical thinking skills.
• Do not include rhetorical questions in your essays. All the questions that are pertinent to your project need to be answered in your essay and your answers again need to be supported with evidence from peer-reviewed journal articles and academically published books.

Attributes of Good Critical Thinking in Papers

• Your paper should include academic sources that explain multiple sides of the issue.
• The evidence that you use should come from high-level researchers engaged in your field of study.
• Your interpretations of the evidence should be objective and state the conclusions and theses presented in the evidence clearly and fairly.
• Your paper should place the various forms of evidence in relation to one another and demonstrate why one form or perspective is stronger than the other positions that one could take on the issue.
• Your paper should point out the limitations of current evidence and attempt to indicate areas for future research.

Ethical Outcomes of the Position You Take
After you have defined the problem and created an argument about how one ought to respond to the issue, you need to explain the ethical outcomes of the position you have taken. This should again be in relation to the field of study in which you are working. There might be different ethical outcomes that result from your analysis. For example, going back to the example issue above, from an economic standpoint, illegal immigrants might contribute positively to the economy of Northern Illinois in a specific number of ways. Thus, an economist who believes that positive impact to the economy is the greatest good would say that one should promote the use of illegal immigrants. However, because these workers are often paid less than others and eliminate jobs that could be done by residents of Chicago, there could be other negative ethical outcomes that would outweigh the positive impacts to the economy. It is your goal to draw out the ethical implications of your thesis and explain the underlying rationale that is the foundation for your claim that one action is better than another.

• Critical thinkers are those who can outline the positive and negative ethical impacts of their positions. In addition, they are able to provide a rationale for why they believe a specific position is the right position, even when it leads to negative outcomes.
• Critical thinkers are also able to be honest and objective about the limitations and gray areas that pertain to their theses.

Final Research Project Requirements
The Final Research Project may be presented as a formal research paper (essay format), a PowerPoint presentation, a video, or a podcast equivalent to a minimum of 10 – 12 pages in APA format (approximately 3,300 – 3,900 typewritten words, excluding title page and reference pages). Written essays must adhere to all APA formatting standards and requirements, as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

PowerPoint presentations must include the full text (at least 3,300 words) in the speaker notes portion of the slides, with appropriate citations, and full reference pages. PowerPoint presentations must adhere to the basic principles of PowerPoint presentation design and must include citations and references according to APA standards and requirements.

Videos and podcasts must include a full transcript, in APA format, including appropriate in-text citations and a references page.

Quotations:
There must be no more than 15% quoted content in the body of your essay. All quoted material must bear quotation marks and a full quotation citation.

Source Documents:

• There must be 10 or more source documents used, cited, and referenced.
• Multimedia sources (such as videos) may be used, but no more than two such sources may be used. If multimedia sources are used, then they must be authored and distributed by credible sources, such as universities, law schools, medical schools, or professors, or found in the Ashford University Library.
• Where print documents are used for source materials, those must be peer-reviewed, scholarly journal articles, and academically published books. Popular media sources (e.g., newspapers, magazines, television and radio shows, etc.) may not be used. Materials from advocacy groups (e.g., Greenpeace, Human Rights Campaign, National Organization for Women, etc.) may not be used.
• Two of the peer-reviewed scholarly sources used must include statistical evidence, which must be accurately interpreted.

Summary Conclusion:
You must have a summary conclusion as the last paragraph(s) of the project, presenting the major point of the essay and the evidence supporting that point.

Word Count:
The content body of the project must be 3,300 words or more. The word count does not include anything in the title page, running header, or reference list. It is expected that you meet all logistical requirements of this paper.

Reference List:

• The list of references must include only those source documents that are cited within the body of the project.
• The project must fully comply with APA formatting standards and requirements as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center: title page, running header with page numbers, font face and size, line spacing, citations, and reference page(s).

This is a good start, but it doesn’t exactly meet the requirements of the assignment. It looks more like a draft for the final paper (I hope the final paper will actually be shorter than this). Nonetheless, you included discussion of the required number of scholarly sources, the sum of your discussions or summaries were a bit too brief. (This should have been at least 150 words apiece. Otherwise, I liked it. I have attached my final paper it is a rough draft it needs to be proof read and changes made. the comment above is what my teacher gave me to change and there are changes on paper that need to be made.

This week you studied a variety of position papers, all of which put forth arguments in support of stronger funding of quality care and education during the early years. These arguments originate in three “worlds” usually not deeply connected with the lives of young children. They are proposed by economists, neuroscientists, and politicians.

Currently, many seasoned early childhood professionals are finding that their experience-based knowledge of children and families is supported by research within these three fields. And, overall, early childhood professionals have welcomed this research and the influx of new interest by these fields because it is beginning to translate into increased funding for programs in need of financial support, or into the creation of worthwhile new early childhood programs.

On what specific data do these voices, new to the field of early childhood, anchor their arguments? What are some of their main arguments for supporting young children and families? In what ways do they articulate their support? What is the essence of their suggestions? This assignment is an opportunity to investigate these questions.

When George Bacchus passed away last year, at age 85, he left his family winery to his sons, Harold and Don, both in their 60s. Harold recently retired from being a locomotive engineer. Don retired from the US Army about ten years ago and has been working as a guide at the local military museum. Both were eager to take on the challenge of running the family vineyard and have already gained a renewed appreciation for all of the hard work their father invested into Bacchus Winery. Harold and Don realize the winery is doing things in an old-fashioned manner and are ready to begin exploring ways to apply some of the new technology their 40ish children have been recommending, but since neither have any interest in technology outside of that which they had encountered in their previous jobs, they need advice.

As they began their management of the business, the men decided against making many changes in personnel. Presently they employ Leia McLeod, the director of finances and payroll; Elise Tudor, director of the marketing department, and her assistant, Rob Dudley; Nate Crisp, production-line manager, and the twenty employees who report to him; and Marge Simpson, who is in charge of distribution.

Bacchus Winery grows its own grapes, apples, cherries, blackberries, and blueberries, as well as keeps some beehives for honey. Bacchus makes and bottles the wine, and then sells it, to both local restaurants and visitors to the winery. Currently, their offerings include a Merlot, a Cabernet, a Chardonnay, a mead, several seasonal fruit wines, and a muscat desert wine. They have been receiving their supplies (bottles, corks, labels, and support ingredients) from a supplier who ships the components every month or so. Harold and Don are responsible for keeping track of their inventories and would like to find a more efficient method of keeping track and ordering supplies, perhaps over the Internet (Don’s idea…Harold remains unconvinced).  Elise would like to use the Internet to market the company’s products, but really has no idea where to begin. Marge, who is responsible for distribution, would like to give customers the ability to order online, and would like to allow them to track shipments.

After several telephone conversations with the two brothers, you believe that you can help them to apply technology to many of the needs of their organization.

Some notes about Harold and Don:

• They don’t have mobile phones, feeling that they survived without them for 60-some years and don’t need them now.
• They are very fond of their fax machine and use it to fax jokes to their 40ish kids’ workplaces. They have email, but don’t remember to check it. When they get an email, they print it off to read it.
• Harold is very proud of never having shopped online, even though his wife, Patty, loves eBay.
• You’ve already realized you might have to explain technical things twice.

1. Pick your favorite primary text from “Lysistrata”

2. Ask yourself, “Why is this my favorite text?” and jot down your answers – be specific. For example, “I liked the part in Equiano’s narrative when he described the slave ship because ….” The “because” part is the important part of the answer. Make a list of notes.

3. Look over the list and compare your notes about the text you’ve chosen with the question areas from the “General Questions” handout (i.e. did you seem most to focus on the plot, the characters, the setting, or what?).

4. Looking at the “General Questions” handout, ask yourself the questions under whichever heading you’ve chosen in regard to the particular work (preferably the particular character, episode, or feature of the particular work) you’ve chosen. Start writing down your answers to these questions, ideally in complete sentences, using brief, targeted quotes from the text to support your answers.

5. Turn your answer(s) to one or more of these “General Questions” into an essay in which you TEACH a FELLOW READER (that is, someone who has also read the work in question, someone who DOES NOT NEED YOU TO SUMMARIZE) about the meaning of the text.

6. Be sure you have a clear thesis statement, if possible (and Googling “literary thesis statement” will help you get a grip on this, but partly, the assignment is a way to help you figure out what a thesis is), and be sure you support that thesis.

7. In both your TITLE and your FIRST SENTENCE, please clearly indicate the topic of your essay, including naming a text and (if available) an author’s name. For example, a solid title for a short essay might be something like this: “The Power of Queens in Virgil’s Aeneid.”

8. Be sure you have some organization for your essay, which, at a minimum, means paragraphs! Ideally, you will be building an argument that has at least a couple of propositions that need some support, and each of these propositions is likely to require writing at least one paragraph.

9. Be sure you use at least a few concise quotes from the text that support your argument.

10. Rewrite/revise, edit, and proofread the essay a couple of times, making it as seamless, coherent and concise as you possibly can. Make it look (in terms of format) like the sample I gave you. Make it one page ONLY!

Donald Sterling, an American businessman and attorney, was the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, a professional basketball franchise of the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1981 to 2014. Nursing interventions appropriate for Mrs. J. at time of her admission:

The initial goal is to stabilize Mrs. J’s. condition. We want to provide conservative measures that will improve her comfort and condition to avoid mechanical ventilator support. It can be used to treat atrial fibrillation, which Mrs. J. has according to the initial cardiac monitoring, indicating a ventricular rate of 132 and atrial fibrillation.
• IV Morphine sulfate (Morphine), is an opioid and usually used for pain but it can also be used to treat “air hunger” Patients with respiratory distress due to acute pulmonary edema in heart failure will have a significantsympathetic response , including increased blood pressure and heart rate (Brywczynski 2010).

Describe four cardiovascular conditions that may lead to heart failure (American Heart Association, 2016):

Heart failure is the inability of the heart to pump a sufficient amount of blood to adequately perfuse the body to meet its metabolic needs. Heart failure is common as people age, and is usually a result of years of added stress due to health conditions that damage the heart or make it work too hard. Poor lifestyle habits like smoking, being overweight, eating foods high in fat and cholesterol and physical inactivity increases your risk of heart disease, heart attack and stroke. Hypertension, prior myocardial infarction (MI), valve disease or longstanding obstructive lung disease can also lead to heart failure being overweight, eating foods high in fat and cholesterol and physical inactivity – can also contribute to heart failure (American Heart Association, 2016).

• Hypertension (HTN): When pressure in the blood vessels are high, the heart has to pump harder than normal to keep the blood circulating. This takes a toll on the heart, and over time the chambers get larger and weaker.
• Myocardial Infarction (MI): Past heart attack (myocardial infarction)
  A heart attack occurs when an artery that supplies blood to the heart muscle gets blocked. The loss of oxygen and nutrients damages the heart’s muscle tissue – part of it essentially “dies.” The damaged heart tissue does not contract as well which weakens the heart’s ability to pump blood.
• · Abnormal heart valves : Heart valve problems can result from disease, infection such as endocarditis or a defect present at birth. When the valves don’t open or close completely during each heartbeat, the heart muscle has to pump harder to keep the blood moving. If the workload becomes too great, heart failure results. Heart muscle disease can also cause the heart to overwork and cause heart failure such as; (dilated cardiomyopathy, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy) or inflammation (myocarditis).
• · Coronary artery disease : When cholesterol and fatty deposits build up in the heart’s arteries, less blood can reach the heart muscle. This build-up is known as atherosclerosis. Blood flow can become totally obstructed, causing a heart attack. Coronary artery disease can also contribute to having high blood pressure which, over time, may lead to heart failure.
• Severe lung disease or sleep apnea : When the lungs don’t work properly, the heart has to work harder to get available oxygen to the rest of the body. Sleep apnea is also a risk factor for such medical problems as high blood pressure, heart failure, diabetes and stroke.

What can be done in the form of medical/nursing interventions to prevent the development of heart failure in each condition American Heart (Association 2016) .

Hypertension: Eat a well-balanced low salt, low fat diet. Maintain a healthy weight. Become more active and exercise daily. Physical activity not only helps control blood pressure it helps you manage your weight, strengthen your heart and lower your stress level. Take your antihypertensive medications daily and properly. Check with your doctor or pharmacist regarding over the counter medications, such as decongestants that can have interactions with your medications. Know how to check your blood pressure and check it daily at rest.

Myocardial Infarction (MI) and Coronary artery disease (CAD): Good nutrition, weight management and physical activity. Get your cholesterol checked. Maintain a healthy lifestyle by avoiding smoking and alcohol. Manage high blood pressure.

Abnormal heart valves: Can be congenital, caused by virus or infection. Inform your patient to let doctor or dentist know of your risk prior to any dental or oral procedures or surgery. Will need antibiotic before procedure to prevent endocarditis. Promote good oral care to prevent tooth decay and abscesses that may lead to infections. Cardiomyopathy is when the heart muscle becomes enlarged, thick or rigid, and in rare cases the muscle tissue is replaced with scar tissue. These patients also need a healthy, low fat, low cholesterol, low sugar diet, Weight management and weight loss. As with all cardiac prevention; exercise and healthy lifestyle to prevent further cardiac complications.

• Education: Provide information and education to older patients and their caregivers about the medications and supplements used. • Advocate: Advocate for older patients. Investigate non pharmacologic treatment measures, as well as less frequent medication dosing or a simplified medication regimen whenever possible.
