It can be demoralizing when managers focus primarily on the deficiencies of employees, yet it can sometimes be difficult to see beyond the negatives. Strengths-based leadership is a management approach that not only recognizes an individual’s strengths, but also draws upon these strengths to enhance the dynamics of the workplace. Strengths-based leadership can be applied to employees performing at their personal best or to those who may need redirection. In addition, the principles of strengths-based leadership can be carried over to managers themselves. When nurse managers are aware of their own strengths, they can better leverage them to effectively manage difficult situations.

To prepare

• Review the article “Know Your Own Strength.” How can strengths-based leadership improve the skills and attitudes of employees?

While between 65 and 85 percent of the public reports that they believe that the news media slant the news in one direction or another, the nature and impact of bias is actually quite complicated. On the one hand, news coverage can be politically biased, that is, specific media outlets could favor one political agenda over another. A popular claim, usually from the political right, is that the media are liberally biased.

Former CBS News reporter Bernard Goldberg, who claims that he is in dependent, argues in his best- selling book, Bias, that most reporters are liberal and therefore slant the news (even unknowingly) to favor liberal positions on issues. In fact, President Bush famously carried a copy of Goldberg’s book when it first appeared on the market! Media critic, and self- professed liberal, Eric Alterman’s What Liberal Media? is a response of sorts to Goldberg’s book as it debunks some of the claims Goldberg makes and offers an argument that the media are mostly conservatively biased (especially when it comes to the ideological persuasions of radio hosts and television political pundits).

Of course, political/ideological bias is but one way that the media can slant coverage. News and entertainment programming can be corporately biased. Corporate bias is news coverage that favors large corporations such as advertisers and media conglomerates. For example, if bad news befell General Electric (which owns NBC) or Disney (which owns ABC) and NBC failed to report on GE’s troubles or ABC put a positive spin on Disney’s problems, we could label their coverage as corporately biased. By the same token, if a prominent newspaper advertiser laid off workers, was indicted, or had a bad fiscal quarter that the newspaper either failed to cover or covered in a way that made the advertiser look good, we could once again conclude that the coverage was corporately biased.

Another kind of bias is concerned with the actual value of media programming itself. Commercial bias is bias that is designed to titillate readers, listeners, or viewers even if the information is not all that useful. For instance, a television news programs focus on the latest scandals involving Paris Hilton might encourage people to watch even though a story on which technology jobs are growing at the fastest rate might be more useful to news consumers.

Commercial bias is often called “infotainment,” a slightly derogatory term for news coverage that is more flash than substance.

The origins of the CNL date back to 1999 when the Institute of Medicine (IOM) produced the report To Err is Human: Building a Safer Health System , which highlighted the large number of patient deaths that occurred as a result of avoidable medical errors.

In response to this and subsequent papers by the IOM, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing issued a White Paper on the Education and Role of the Clinical Nurse Leader™ . This paper identified an approach to strengthening nursing leadership at the “point at which care is delivered” to improve patient safety and strengthen the quality and outcomes of the care delivered

CNLs provide education to all the different professional groups they work with as they integrate evidence-based practice and change at the point of care. They are likely to liaise with the CNE as part of the unit leadership team when areas of educational need are identified and work with them to monitor and feedback on the effectiveness of the educational interventions provided by either CNEs or CNLs.

In their Transforming Practice, Transforming Care™ model for the clinician at the point of care, Monaghan and Swihart identified six elements of the CNL role, all of which are inter-related and need to be mastered:

Their role is not primarily as a direct caregiver but rather a facilitator of direct care. Your news article can be domestic news (from your country – local or not) or international news. To help you in your summary presentation, think about what you’ve learned from your reading/listening classes about creating good summaries. One important point is to answer the “Wh- Questions” – Who/What/When/Where/How/Why. Also remember to give important details and background information that help your listeners understand the context of the news article as well.

You will speak and present about your news article in front of the whole class. Your presentation will be around 10 minutes. Try not to be too short or too long with your presentation, or you will lose some points. A suspect is apprehended in a large-chain grocery store by the security guard. The suspect is placed in handcuffs and taken to the manager’s office. The police are called and advised of the situation. Officer Jones arrives at the store approximately 12 minutes later. Officer Jones takes a statement from the security guard and views the in-store camera film of the shop lifting incident. Officer Jones places the suspect under arrest, reads the suspect the Miranda warnings, and asks the suspect if he would like to make a statement. The suspect replies, “No, I would like a lawyer”. Anna Martin is a young teacher, in her second year of teaching and first year in a second grade class. She has had great success working with students and she makes great connections with her students.

On Monday, Anna found her district benchmark scores in her mailbox. These district benchmark tests are given three times a year, and they measure student growth on a series of standards based areas. The benchmark assessments include a math test, a special math problem solving assessment, a long reading exam, and a writing prompt. In her report she found a set of charts with all the students’ scores in columns across the page. The writing scores, however, weren’t on the chart because the teachers will be scoring those at the next staff meeting.

The charts are an array of colors; with red scores indicating students who are below target, green for those who have made the district target, and blue for those students who are working above grade level. Unfortunately, this time there is much more red and it seems like the students didn’t make “district growth.”

Part Two

Part Three

For the past two months, Anna has followed the district adopted text book and put students in small reading groups based on reading level. The groups had worked through the intervention materials. The textbooks seemed to only ask the students comprehension questions that asked the students to answer questions about what happened.

Anna looks at the Excel file and realized that the district test didn’t tell her anything except which student was low, which was high, or who was in-between. She wondered how she could get more information about how her students were trying to comprehend this material.
