CHEM 101

What is CHEM 101?

Chemistry in Our Community is designed for non-science majors who are  interested in learning about scientific topics currently in the news  and affecting our community, such as the ozone hole, global warming,  acid rain, nuclear power, plastics, drugs, and genetic engineering. The  course fulfills the physical and natural science general education core  curriculum requirement.

Is CHEM 101 a “remedial course”?

Chemistry in Our Community is not a remedial course. The course  fulfills the physical and natural science general education core  curriculum requirement.

How does CHEM 101 differ from the other 100 level chemistry courses?

The course is geared specifically to non-science majors and differs  fundamentally from other chemistry courses by using topical issues such  as global warming, nuclear power and genetic engineering to introduce  and reinforce key chemical concepts. Chemistry and science are presented  as a web of related ideas and calculations rather than a sequence,  which favors learning patterns common in non-science majors.

What levels of care might you consider: outpatient, intensive outpatient, and/or residential?

This unit contains a Journal Entry. Please respond to the following questions in at least 250 words or one page. Write your response directly in the Journal area.

In the past few years, researchers have explored food addiction as a public health problem. Experts believe that compulsive eating can trigger the same reward areas in the brain as drug use.

Read the case study underneath the questions about Maggie and her eating disorder and respond to the following questions:

1. What are the most important concerns to focus on first as her counselor?

2. How would you begin to explore your concerns about her eating patterns, or would you?

3. What levels of care might you consider: outpatient, intensive outpatient, and/or residential?

4. How would you discuss the addictive nature of her eating patterns? Or, would you mention addiction?

Case Study Maggie is an 18-year-old college freshman. During high school, she was an honor roll student and athlete, participating on the soccer and swim teams. Maggie is very driven to succeed at college, and is feeling the strains of being in a new place with high academic standards. She began to gravitate to comforting favorite foods in the cafeteria, such as pizza, French fries, and soft serve ice cream. She soon began to notice that her clothes were getting tight. Maggie became very scared of gaining the “freshman fifteen” and started working out and eating more healthfully. After she lost the few pounds she had gained, however, she decided she could stand to lose a few more. She began getting up at 6 a.m. to fit in a long gym workout before class, and began to make rules about which foods in the cafeteria she was allowed to eat. Maggie comes to see you at the university counseling center because she is “stressed” and “anxious.” During your assessment, you notice that she is very thin, and you learn that she has lost 20 pounds since she began what she describes as “just eating better and working out to be healthier.

For narrative-collaborative and solution-focused therapies, primacy is given to clients’ own meaning-making of their family stories. In other words, change comes not from altering dysfunctional patterns of relating, but re-authoring the ways couples and families make meaning of their relationships. Consider the impact of such techniques if your theoretical orientation is more action-oriented in focus. Conversely, imagine the potential difficulty if narrative-collaborative is your chosen theory, but clients are less inclined to talk about their problems and participate in this type of storytelling.

For this Discussion, select one of the theories demonstrated in the media this week (either narrative-collaborative or solution-focused). Consider challenges you might encounter if you attempted to integrate the theory you selected with your lens for couples counseling, including, but not limited to, agency or private practice demands, ethical responsibilities, or theory incompatibility.

By Day 4

Post a brief explanation of one challenge you may encounter if you attempted to integrate the theory you selected with your main theoretical orientation in your future professional practice. Then, explain how you might mitigate this challenge.

Shelly’s mother calls the clinic and tells the nurse practitioner that Shelly has been “running a fever of 101 F for the past 2 days” and although her temperature decreases to 37.2 C (99 F) with Tylenol, it returns to 38.4 C (101 F) within 4 hours of each dose. Further, her mother says that Shelly complains that “it hurts when I pee-pee”. Shelly’s mother also has noticed that her daughter seems to be in the bathroom “every hour”. She makes an appointment to see the nurse practitioner this afternoon.

The potential diagnosis is UTI.

1. What other assessment data would be helpful for the nurse practitioner to have?

2. What are the organisms most likely to cause an UTI?

3. What is the pharmacological treatment for Shelly? Keep in mind safe dosing.

4. What are the teaching priorities for Shelly and her mother prior to her discharge from the clinic?

Signature Assignment: Legal and Ethical Considerations in Nursing

Presentation:

Among various stakeholders, the registered nurse must incorporate legal and ethical theories and principles into practice. There is a need to evaluate the legal and ethical considerations that exist in healthcare today, to assess nursing’s role in health initiatives, and to find ways that we can help improve health and health outcomes. This presentation will help nurses recognize and respond to dilemmas within diverse health care settings and nursing roles. This presentation will provide an overview of regulatory action and the legislative and judicial processes, enabling nurses to become familiar with changes affecting the health care system such as patient rights, technological advances, and managed care.

This presentation will examine the role of the nurse as a health professional, advocate, and leader:

  • Select five legal or ethical concepts that you feel influence nursing practice.
  • Explain the selected concepts regarding both the impact on agency viability and quality patient care.
  • Review the selected concepts and strategically analyze for priorities, challenges, and issues from a legal and ethical perspective.
  • Identify instances of actions taken by an agency or provider that would or could violate the ethical duties and responsibilities of the health care providers or the rights of patients.
  • Develop a policy proposal, measures, and recommendations for prevention of legal and ethical violations.
  • Detail how nursing could intervene or advocate to incorporate legal and ethical theories and principles more effectively into practice.

This PowerPoint® (Microsoft Office) presentation should be a minimum of 20 slides, including a title, introduction, conclusion and reference slide, with detailed speaker notes and recorded audio comments for all content slides. Use at least four scholarly sources and make certain to review the module’s Signature Assignment Rubric before starting your presentation. This presentation is worth 400 points for quality content and presentation.

Explain the role you would take in any intervention given your scope of practice and to whom you would refer the client for additional intervention.

Trauma is ubiquitous. While trauma is most commonly associated with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, trauma can manifest in a myriad of different ways and not every client who experiences trauma will be diagnosed with PTSD. Social workers intervene directly with trauma when working in Veteran’s services, domestic violence/sexual assault response programs, and child protective services. Social workers also work with trauma indirectly when working in mental health, substance abuse services, schools, refugee resettlement, and other forms of social service. Whether or not you are directly treating a traumatic episode as the presenting problem, trauma will be present in the clinical space.

In this Week’s Discussion, you will demonstrate your skills related to explaining trauma and intervention to a client. This will require you explain the concepts in a manner that is understandable to the developmental and educational level of the client. No need to solicit a volunteer to assist you. Position yourself as though the client is directly behind the camera lens. The goal is to show, not tell. In other words, you are expected to demonstrate rather than discuss your skills. You should role-play as if you were speaking directly to a client.

By Day 3

Submit a 4-5 minute video demonstrating your skills. In the role-play:

  • Ask one question that you would use to elicit information about a client’s trauma experience. [Assume a response and move to the next part of the skill demonstration]
  • Explain to the client the effects of trauma generally and how trauma may be affecting the client specifically.
  • Explain to the client what intervention(s) you would recommend and why.
  • Explain the role you would take in any intervention given your scope of practice and to whom you would refer the client for additional intervention.

Final Version Due: Tuesday 09/03

1. Hume’s objection to Clarke’s Cosmological Argument is that the Principle of Sufficient Reason would not be violated if only dependent beings existed. Explain Clarke’s argument, explain this criticism, and argue that this criticism succeeds despite Rowe’s attempt to undermine it.

2. One reply to Mackie’s version of the problem of evil is as follows: good cannot exist without evil, so the world must have evil in it if God wants to create a world with good in it. Mackie argues that this reply fails because good can exist without evil. Defend this reply to the problem of evil against Mackie.

3. One reply to Mackie’s version of the problem of evil is as follows: freedom is a very good thing, God gave humans freedom, and evil exists as the inevitable result of human free choices. Mackie argues that this reply fails because God could have created a world in which everyone always freely chooses to do the right thing. Defend this reply to the problem of evil against Mackie.

4. James offers a basic criticism of Clifford’s view that “it is wrong always, everywhere, and for anyone, to believe anything upon insufficient evidence.” Explain Clifford’s view, explain James’s criticism, and defend Clifford’s view against that criticism.

TITLE:

Are racial/ethnic minorities less likely to be compliant with Type II Diabetes treatment compared to non-minority groups?

Description of public health issue

The public health issue chosen is Type II diabetes as it relates to minority populations. The variable that is being researched is whether or not compliance with medications differs between minority and non-minority racial/ethnic populations. Diabetes remains the 7th leading cause of death within the United States alone with greater than 30 million people diagnosed with Diabetes, and over 84 million diagnosed with prediabetes (CDC, 2019). Diabetes has been linked to cardiovascular disease, neuropathy, chronic kidney disease, eye damage, peripheral vascular disease affecting extremities, skin conditions, opportunistic infection, and mental illness such as Alzheimer’s or dementia (Mayo Clinic, 2018).

It has been found that 15.1% of American Indians, 12.7% of Hispanics, 12.1% of Black non-Hispanics, were diagnosed with diabetes between the years of 2013-2015 compared to only 8% of Asians and 7.4% of White non-Hispanics (CDC, 2019). For racial and ethnic minorities, it has been found that there is worse control of diabetes, higher prevalence rates, and increased complication rates (Peek, 2007). Understanding what specific risk factors these patients may have, as well as how to reduce the health disparity between races is important in improving health outcomes across all populations.

Defined of Domestic violence are physical, sexual, or emotional/psychological abuse directed toward men, women, children, or elders occurring in current or past familial or intimate relations whether the individuals are cohabiting or not and including violence directed toward dating partners (Draucker, 2002). Some of them are bruises, black, red, or purple marks everywhere on their bodies. May torsional fracture injuries on arms or legs that look like they came from punching, twisting, or being thrown down, but victims will make excuses like tripping or being accident-prone or clumsy. Often the seriousness of the injury does not match up with the explanation. And also, some of the victims of domestic violence will attempt to hide bruises with makeup, clothing, or sunglasses. In my working place, any person is required to report a suspicion of mistreatment. Call the police or 9-1-1 immediately if someone is in immediate life-threatening danger. If someone, not a direct life-threatening danger who suspects that abuse has occurred or is occurring, we have to report to the supervision. The supervisor will relay our concerns to the local adult protective services (age 18 and older), long-term care ombudsman, or the police. If anyone suspects that a child is being abused or neglected, should report their concern to the New York State Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCR) at 800-342-3720— open 24-hours a day to take your call.

Paragraph 2

Domestic violence occurs when a person is being abused by their former or current spouse and cohabitating or romantic partner. Partner abuse does not happen in a single act of assault, but a series of progressive and cyclic violent acts against an individual to exert control over them. The most apparent characteristics of domestic violence within a family are injuries or physical repercussions of battering. They range from minor injuries to disfigurement, permanent disability, and death. A nurse or healthcare provider can look for contusions, neurological problems, anal or vaginal tears, lacerations, and musculoskeletal damages (Wilson et al., 2016). Stress-related consequences are also products of domestic violence, including chronic pain, eating disorders, persistent headaches, and irritable bowel syndrome. Some bruises may appear as they came from choking, being thrown down, or punching. The patient could have purple or red marks on their neck, black eyes, and sprained wrists. Many victims will attempt to hide the true nature of their bruises using makeup, sunglasses, or clothing. They may also create excuses that do not match the seriousness of their situation, such as being clumsy or accident-prone. Sexual violence may result in sexual dysfunction, urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted illnesses, pelvic pain, and bladder infections. Battering during pregnancy is also a standard indicator and may lead to placental separation, low birth weight infants, miscarriages, uterus ruptures, antepartum hemorrhage, and fetal fracture (Ali et al., 2016). Mental health symptoms are, at times, linked to violence, such as suicidality, depressive symptoms, substance abuse, and post-traumatic stress disorder. The procedure in our facility for dealing with or reporting abuse is known as RADAR. The practitioner must routinely (R) examine or screen their patient. They should ask (A) questions directly, non-judgmentally, and politely, including whether it is safe for them to go back home and to reassure them that it is not their fault. The provider should document (D) everything that they have gathered during the interview so that the patient can have a legal record, and future practitioners are up to speed with the case. They should assess (A) the safety of the patient. If the victim expresses concerns about going back home, the practitioner should review (R) the options available for reporting and provide referrals (Davies et al., 2017). The nurse must inform the police immediately and offer the patient a haven, such as an organization that deals with domestic violence, in situations where they do not have a place to go. They should also conduct follow-ups and assist the individual in getting in touch with professionals who can assist in dealing with the consequences of abuse.

The situation with Germany at that historic moment was complicated; there is even a term – the German Paradox

The First World War lasted from 1914 to 1918. This war caused an enormous impact on the development of Europe and the world after its completion. Some empires disintegrated, and others disappeared, while new countries arose on the map of Europe. However, this war is crucial and sophisticated not only for its consequences but its causes. Undoubtedly, the phenomenon of war and the country’s decision to start military operations cannot be limited only to a particular interpretation, neither liberal or realistic, but it can be said that all wars arise from the available confit that has evolved over a period and then matured enough to be articulated in such a fashion that any bargains or negotiations can take place because they do not suit to the interest of the parties to the conflict or even one of the party’s members. The history of the First World War can be structurally analyzed as a situation in which all players have their interests and ambitions, as well as fears, and at a specific moment of the conflict, they refuse to bargain.

One can start with the fact that all countries that are needed to be analyzed in the structural analysis of the First World War had a long history of relations with each other. At the same time, these countries managed to change their functions somewhat: for example, the Great Britain, which previously acted as a mediator and an influential external force in international conflicts, lost such status (Lecture 1) and understood that, in the event of a war, the country would have to be a participant in active military operations. Therefore, it must be understood that the history of the unions, which were formed during the WWI, evolved and took shape over the course of decades, and did not result from certain random international “games.” Therefore, the structural analysis must check the historical context to see countries relations and ambitions in the international arena. Such a perspective of analysis helps to understand why conflicts which can cause to reshaping hegemony in the region, or even in the world, tend to become wars.

Analyzing the WWI, one need to check two sides to the conflict and remember that each participant was eager to gain or save major power status. In the first camp were Germany and Austria-Hungary, and in the second – Russia, France, and Great Britain. Each of the countries had not only the interests that all the participants in their party shared, but also its own. So, Austria-Hungary had significant problems inside the empire and was in decline (Lecture 1) – a large number of internal issues connected to ethnic conflicts of a vast territory, financial inability to modernize the country and the army. In addition, this empire had two centers (Austria and Hungary), and, therefore, any issue of weakening the power of the monarchy was able to lead to thoughts of separation; so, the monarchy did it best to keep the empire’s unity and stop the decline. In a toto, Austria-Hungary at that time was a weak state, but with long-standing and robust traditions and political institutions and representations in other countries, which made this empire an advantageous and vital ally for Germany.

The situation with Germany at that historic moment was complicated; there is even a term – the German Paradox – which describes the real weakness of the state (at the international level and in some domestic policies), but is sure that there is an obvious potential to become a strong and powerful state and even to repel hegemony (Peter S. 56). In addition to such features as a young age of the united states and its relative mono-nationality (in comparison with Austria-Hungary), Germany managed to build a robust, modern and advanced army in a relatively short period of the existence of its unity. At that time, the Security Dilemma in Europe manifested itself thru archaic arms races with the help of industrialization and scientific progress, which allowed countries to obtain powerful weapons (Lecture 3) and thru the Lock-In situation. Consequently, it can be argued that Europe had the balance about the arms race, and, therefore, the mighty army of Germany did give a significant advantage, but could not act as a separate factor of the beginning/not the beginning of the war. Thus, the alliance between Austria-Hungary and Germany can be called as complimentary coalition and was profitable to both members (Peter S. 27). The empire defended Germany and gave it time and space for growing into a stronger state, while the army and the better economic situation in Germany helped Austria-Hungary count on support in links with intra-conflicts or crises within the empire.

In the other camp there were Russia, France and Great Britain. In this war, England could not be on the sidelines, because its internal interest and security issues were to ensure the security of Belgium and the English Channel, which gave England the opportunity to create trade (Lecture 3). There were long-term trade ties between France and Russia that brought benefit, and, therefore, in the situation, in which Germany declares war on France, the Russian Empire would have to get involved in this war in order to divide Germany’s military power into two fronts and quickly defeat the enemy and gain even more profits and via versa. It should also be noted that Russia had a desire to expand both its territory and the borders of influence (Peter S. 157). From the geopolitical map of the world, one should not forget about the Ottoman Empire and the vast region of Balkans, which was divided between empires and independent states (like Serbia), which had their interests. Russia for a long time had friendly relations with Serbia and sought to seize the monopoly on the Black Sea, and, therefore, wanted to weaken the Ottoman Empire, which was friendly with Austria-Hungary. Thus, it can be said that all major power had the long history of connections and relations and their then intentions and national interests and threats were based not only sympathy or diplomacy but, on their geography, and the geographical location of their enemies and allies. Thus, the world was divided into two camps, and members within them had no opportunity actually to pick a side before the war or act as a third party; such situations are called the Lock-In situation.

The situation of the geopolitical picture of Europe before the WWI had such a shape. The official reason for the actual start of the war is the assassination of the successor to the monarchy of Austria-Hungary by the forces of Serbia. This situation indicated the apparent intention of Serbia to shake Austria-Hungary to achieve the collapse of the empire and to increase own territory and influence (Lecture 3). In addition, this action happened because of the approval and support of Russia (Peter S. 79), which also had specific territorial and political plans for the lands protected by the presence of the Austria-Hungarian empire. Therefore, the assassination in another context could not lead to a world war, but only to a war between Austria-Hungary and Serbia, or the collapse of the empire, or a quick resolution of the conflict. However, Germany’s strong external priority was to prevent the destruction of this empire, because Germany without an Austria-Hungary would not be able to realize its potential to gain hegemony, while Russia realized that the issue of the collapse of the Austria-Hungary was a matter of time, and, therefore, was not interested in preserving the empire. Therefore, the two countries had clearly expressed interests and goals, and any bargain could not provide such a solution to the conflict, in which Austria-Hungary decays and simultaneously continues to live as an empire. The Austria-Hungarian empire decides to punish Serbia by attracting not all military forces (Peter S. 47), this gesture should act as a sign for Russia that the Austria-Hungary is going to punish and is not intend to start a long war for survival. However, very often such gestures are not interpreted in the way the initiator of the message wants, so the WWI began. It is also important to understand that Austria-Hungary could not fail to answer: given the external political arena and the internal crisis in the empire.

In conclusion, WWI was the war for the hegemony for its beginning because the major question was about the ability of Austria-Hungary to survive as an empire. The positive outcome of the empire’s fate was beneficial for Germany who needed a defense to become the strong state. Russia and its allies desired the end of the empire because of the opportunity to gain new lands and power.

Although mentally sharp, his condition has declined in the past several months and he has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He has declined treatment, stating that he understands his poor prognosis and would rather spend whatever life he has left unbothered by the stress and side effects of treatment,

Last month Mr. Harod was transferred to the nursing home section of the retirement community. You have noticed several individuals regularly visiting him and learn from another resident that these people are part of a group who support assisted suicide,

A few days later, when entering Mr. Harod’s room for morning rounds, you find him deceased. By his bed are several papers that describe who to contact and what plans to make. You are aware that the people who had been visiting had been there the night before and spent considerable time in a private meeting with Mr. Harod.

One of the residents comments that Mr. Harod “went out on his own terms,” It appears several of the residents support his choice; it was, in fact, suicide.

What should you do in this situation?

Consequences of Globalization

Our social order can only survive if it’s both sustainable and adaptive. That means it must be maintainable and flexible.

The template for this idea is built into Earth’s natural systems. Think about the water cycle, the nitrogen cycle, and photosynthesis. To the extent that humans haven’t overly disrupted these cycles, they’re both sustainable and adaptive. For example, the nitrogen cycle adapts to changes in ecosystems such as different ratios of producers to consumers. (Producers are the life forms that draw on sunlight energy to produce oxygen, carbon dioxide, and glucose through photosynthesis. Producers form the very foundation of the global food chain. Consumers are the life forms that rely, directly or indirectly, on producers for energy.)

Due to the burgeoning population growth of humans, we’ve become ravenous life-energy consumers. Our demand for resources already exceeds the planet’s finite resource limits, as illustrated by the energy and water crises already discussed. Thus, our most important objective at the present time is to figure out how to establish an appropriate balance of human population to Earth’s resources. That’s a daunting challenge. Nevertheless, meeting it is our only option. The alternative is the end of human civilization—and quite possibly our life on this planet.

To avoid global catastrophe, we must address three major issues, namely,

  • We      should reconsider global capitalism in favor of alternative social and      economic systems. These should be based on the well-being of humans and      equitable sharing of resources with the natural world.
  • We      must allow ethical norms and practices to guide developments in science      and technology.
  • We      must discover and acquire a balance between head and heart. The key to      this issue is to establish gender and other types of equality across the      globe.

These perspectives are idealistic and interconnected. Together they represent a radical paradigm shift.

Consequences of Globalization

The painful consequences of the neoliberal agenda have been covered earlier in the course. It should be clear to you that if our goal is global distributive justice, we must abandon that agenda. We must suffer through the pain and discomfort involved in transitioning to more humane social and economic systems.

Here are a few initial thoughts regarding an eventual economic transition.

Economic transitions require changes to governance and modes of resource distribution. These must become more harmonious with the natural world. Digital and electronic communications might serve as an international information grid of sorts. People could share problems and solutions. Nations and localities could establish a common ground for limited trade and technological transfer.

Humans across the globe must share a common goal. We must address climate change by transitioning to renewable sources of energy. We must find ways to address water scarcity. The heaviest burden in these transitions will fall on developed nations, particularly the United States. At both national and international levels, we must reverse the flow of capital. It must be directed to flow mainly to the public to engineer a renewable power grid as well as provide basic human services like healthcare and education.

Write a 4-6 page annotated bibliography where you identify peer-reviewed publications that promote the use of a selected technology to enhance quality and safety standards in nursing.

Assessment 3 Instructions: Annotated Bibliography on Technology in Nursing

Content

  •  Print
  • Write a 4-6 page annotated bibliography where you identify peer-reviewed publications that promote the use of a selected technology to enhance quality and safety standards in nursing.
Before you begin to develop the assessment you are encouraged to complete the Annotated Bibliography Formative Assessment. Completing this activity will help you succeed with the assessment and counts towards course engagement.
Rapid changes in information technology go hand-in-hand with progress in quality health care delivery, nursing practice, and interdisciplinary team collaboration. The following are only a few examples of how the health care field uses technology to provide care to patients across multiple settings:

    • Patient monitoring devices.
    • Robotics.
    • Electronic medical records.
    • Data management resources.
    • Ready access to current science.
    • Technology is essential to the advancement of the nursing profession, maintaining quality care outcomes, patient safety, and research.
This assessment will give you the opportunity to deepen your knowledge of how technology can enhance quality and safety standards in nursing. You will prepare an annotated bibliography on technology in nursing. A well-prepared annotated bibliography is a comprehensive commentary on the content of scholarly publications and other sources of evidence about a selected nursing-related technology. A bibliography of this type provides a vehicle for workplace discussion to address gaps in nursing practice and to improve patient care outcomes. As nurses become more accountable in their practice, they are being called upon to expand their role of caregiver and advocate to include fostering research and scholarship to advance nursing practice. An annotated bibliography stimulates innovative thinking to find solutions and approaches to effectively and efficiently address these issues.
      Demonstration of Proficiency
By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the course competencies through the following assessment scoring guide criteria:
    • Competency 3: Evaluate the impact of patient care technologies on desired outcomes.
      • Analyze current evidence on the impact of a selected patient care technology on patient safety, quality of care, and the interdisciplinary team.
      • Integrate current evidence about the impact of a selected patient care technology on patient safety, quality of care, and the interdisciplinary team into a recommendation.
    • Competency 4: Recommend the use of a technology to enhance quality and safety standards for patients.
      • Describe organizational factors influencing the selection of a technology in the health care setting.
      • Justify the implementation and use of a selected technology in a health care setting.
    • Competency 5: Apply professional, scholarly communication to facilitate use of health information and patient care technologies.
      • Create a clear, well-organized, and professional annotated bibliography that is generally free from errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
      • Follow APA style and formatting guidelines for all bibliographic entries.
    • Preparation
To successfully complete this assessment, perform the following preparatory activities:
    • Select a single direct or indirect patient care technology that is relevant to your current practice or that is of interest to you. Direct patient care technologies require an interaction, or direct contact, between the nurse and patient. Nurses use direct patient care technologies every day when delivering care to patients. Electronic thermometers or pulse oximeters are examples of direct patient care technologies. Indirect patient care technologies, on the other hand, are those employed on behalf of the patient. They do not require interaction, or direct contact, between the nurse and patient. A handheld device for patient documentation is an example of an indirect patient care technology. Examples of topics to consider for your annotated bibliography include:
      • Delivery robots.
      • Electronic medication administration with barcoding.
      • Electronic clinical documentation with clinical decision support.
      • Patient sensor devices/wireless communication solutions.
      • Real-time location systems.
      • Telehealth.
      • Workflow management systems.
    • Conduct a library search using the various electronic databases available through the Capella University Library.
      • Consult the BSN Program Library Research Guide for help in identifying scholarly and/or authoritative sources.
      • Access the NHS Learner Success Lab, linked in the courseroom navigation menu, for additional resources.
    • Scan the search results related to your chosen technology.
    • Select four peer-reviewed publications focused on your selected topic that are the most interesting to you.
    • Notes
    • Publications may be research studies or review articles from a professional source. Newspapers, magazines, and blogs are not considered professional sources.
    • Your selections need to be current—within the last five years.
    • Annotated Bibliography
Prepare a 4–6 page annotated bibliography in which you identify and describe peer-reviewed publications that promote the use of your selected technology to enhance quality and safety standards in nursing. Be sure that your annotated bibliography includes all of the following elements:
    • Introduction to the Selected Technology Topic
      • What is your rationale for selecting this particular technology topic? Why are you interested in this?
      • What research process did you employ?
        • What databases did you use?
        • What search terms did you use?
        • Note: In this section of your bibliography, you may use first person since you are asked to describe your rationale for selecting the topic and the research strategies you employed. Use third person in the rest of the bibliography, however.
    • Annotation Elements
      • For each resource, include the full reference followed by the annotation.
      • Explain the focus of the research or review article you chose.
      • Provide a summary overview of the publication.
        • According to this source, what is the impact of this technology on patient safety and quality of care?
        • According to this source, what is the relevance of this technology to nursing practice and the work of the interdisciplinary health care team?
        • Why did you select this publication to write about out of the many possible options? In other words, make the case as to why this resource is important for health care practitioners to read.
    • Conclusion/Recommendation
      • How would you tie together the key learnings from each of the four publications you examined?
      • What organizational factors influence the selection of a technology in a health care setting? Consider such factors as organizational policies, resources, culture/social norms, commitment, training programs, and/or employee empowerment.
      • How would you justify the implementation and use of the technology in a health care setting? Consider the impact of the technology on the health care organization, patient care/satisfaction, and interdisciplinary team productivity, satisfaction, and retention.
    • Example Assessment: You may use the following to give you an idea of what a Proficient or higher rating on the scoring guide would look like:
    • Assessment 3 Example [PDF].
    • Additional Requirements
    • Written communication: Ensure written communication is free of errors that detract from the overall message.
    • Length: 4–6-typed, double-spaced pages.
    • Number of resources: Cite a minimum of 4 peer-reviewed resources.
    • Font and font size: Use Times New Roman, 12 point.
    • APA: Follow APA style and formatting guidelines for all bibliographic entries.
    • Portfolio Prompt: Save your presentation to your ePortfolio. Submissions to the ePortfolio will be part of your final capstone course.

Answer both of the following questions:

What is the most important lesson this course has taught you about science or technology? Which specific ideas or arguments from the authors we have read have taught you this lesson? Exactly why do you consider this lesson an important one?

Use examples from one or more of our assigned readings to document the extent to which you have used your work in this course “to think critically about contemporary technology issues….and to learn to accept the social responsibilities of educated citizens in a global technological society” (p. xiv).

Please ensure that your answer are well-organized, make specific reference to relevant ideas from our course readings, and addresses each aspect of the assigned questions.

Connect these skills to the things you will be doing in your professional life.

APA style

2 paragraphs (each 8 sentences)

Initial Post Instructions
Consider some of the skills and knowledge you need to understand truth-functional logic. Forming the truth-functional claims means you have to have a good understanding of how English sentences are formed in order to convey accurate and precise meaning. Translating English sentences into symbolic language requires you to distinguish the parts of complex thought, put those thoughts into logical order, and make inferences from them.

For the initial post, address the following:

  • Determine how abstracting the parts of a truth-functional statement forces you to pay strict attention to the meaning and the validity of its logic. To get you started, reduce this statement to truth-functional symbolic form:
    • “If I ask you to help me out, then I need your help; I need your help, so I must be asking for it.”
  • Connect these skills to the things you will be doing in your professional life.

Construct two mind maps—one for chronic venous insufficiency and one for deep venous thrombosis. Include the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and clinical presentation, as well as the diagnosis and treatment you explained in your paper

Advanced practice nurses often treat patients with vein and artery disorders such as chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) and deep venous thrombosis (DVT). While the symptoms of both disorders are noticeable, these symptoms are sometimes mistaken for signs of other conditions, making the disorders difficult to diagnose. Nurses must examine all symptoms and rule out other potential disorders before diagnosing and prescribing treatment for patients. In this Assignment, you explore the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and clinical presentation of CVI and DVT.

To Prepare

  • Review the section “Diseases of the Veins” (pp. 598-599) in Chapter 23 of the Huether and McCance text. Identify the pathophysiology of chronic venous insufficiency and deep venous thrombosis. Consider the similarities and differences between these disorders.
  • Select a patient factor different from the one you selected in this week’s Discussion: genetics, gender, ethnicity, age, or behavior. Think about how the factor you selected might impact the pathophysiology of CVI and DVT. Reflect on how you would diagnose and prescribe treatment of these disorders for a patient based on the factor you selected.
  • Review the “Mind Maps—Dementia, Endocarditis, and Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)” media in the Week 2 Learning Resources. Use the examples in the media as a guide to construct two mind maps—one for chronic venous insufficiency and one for venous thrombosis. Consider the epidemiology and clinical presentation of both chronic venous insufficiency and deep venous thrombosis.

To Complete

Write a 2- to 3-page paper that addresses the following:

  • Compare the pathophysiology of chronic venous insufficiency and deep venous thrombosis. Describe how venous thrombosis is different from arterial thrombosis.
  • Explain how the patient factor you selected might impact the pathophysiology of CVI and DVT. Describe how you would diagnose and prescribe treatment of these disorders for a patient based on the factor you selected.
  • Construct two mind maps—one for chronic venous insufficiency and one for deep venous thrombosis. Include the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and clinical presentation, as well as the diagnosis and treatment you explained in your paper.

Analyze the importance (or lack thereof) of wellness and health in society and how it has sparked change in the everyday behavior of individuals or societies?

Overview: For this milestone, due in Module Two, you will complete a draft of the Introduction section of your presentation. The final project represents a significant portion of your final grade, so it is imperative that your ideas are well developed. This milestone will be submitted as a Word document. Note that this document, with revisions, can serve as your speaker notes for the final project submission. Milestone One provides you with an opportunity to obtain valuable feedback from your instructor that you can incorporate into your final project submission.

Prompt: The topic you select for this Milestone is the topic you will explore throughout this course. The issue is an event within that particular topic that looks at one aspect of it. Your chosen issue will be discussed further in Milestone Two. Review the suggested list of Example Issues and Topics for the Final Project document. Then, based on the issues and topics presented, address the following critical elements:

I. Introduction: Examine the importance of wellness in society and how it influences social practices as well as your discipline of study. To help guide your analysis, you will explore a topic that has been discussed in this course.

A. Analyze the importance (or lack thereof) of wellness and health in society and how it has sparked change in the everyday behavior of individuals or societies?

B. Analyze how social practices and our idea of wellness have shaped each other.

C. Analyze how wellness has influenced the everyday behavior of individuals in your discipline of study or the professional field you are interested

After viewing the films, you will write a ~1 page, single spaced (over is fine, too short will be evaluated as poor ‘quality’ in the rubric) summary of the movies and your interpretation as it relates to your own personal point of view regarding the problem or issues raised

these essays have two parts:

1) Summary of the film and the information presented

2) Personal Reflection.

The method you incorporate both concepts is open.  Some people do 1 then 2 as two separate parts of the essay, while others integrate both as they write the essay.  The first format is straight forward, the second is more like reflecting on the topics in the film summary as they happen.

After viewing the films, you will write a ~1 page, single spaced (over is fine, too short will be evaluated as poor ‘quality’ in the rubric) summary of the movies and your interpretation as it relates to your own personal point of view regarding the problem or issues raised.  How do you contribute to the problem, fight the problem, or are unaffected by it.  Associated with these movies are a series of FAQs or Learn More.  Take a look and investigate at least one of these FAQs concepts to expand your understanding of the topic.

· Explain your choice to write to this representative in particular, and provide your pamphlet. For example, maybe your research showed that this representative sponsored legislation on this issue in the past.

Instructions You are a lobbyist for an issue that you find important. For example, you would like to see the banning of smoking in federal buildings (Note: This policy has already been enacted.) You are going to make an informational pamphlet to highlight your points to prominent members of Congress. Research members of Congress that you will target in your lobbying. Explain why these members are critical to your goal. Make a plan of action and produce a pamphlet supporting your cause. Who will you be reaching out to? Why? Write a cover letter to a Congressional member and include your reasoning for reaching out to them in particular in the letter. Remember a lobbyist is only as good as the information they provide. A lobbyist who provides incomplete or unreliable information will soon be unemployed, or lose access to officials.

Cover letter should:

· Follow a standard business format

· Correctly address your Congressperson

· Use the correct postal address

· Explain your choice to write to this representative in particular, and provide your pamphlet. For example, maybe your research showed that this representative sponsored legislation on this issue in the past.

Pamphlet should:

· Define the problem. Tells us exactly what the problem is. Detail its urgency and provide data. Be objective.

· Analyze the problem. Provide relevant data. Tell us how to make sense of the data. Provide any findings

· Offer a recommendation. Do not generalize. Be specific.

· Must be persuasive.

· Cite four scholarly sources

Submit your cover letter and pamphlet for grading.

Writing Requirements (APA format).

· Length: Cover letter to Congressman should be only 1 page

· Pamphlet should be 5 pages in length

· 1-inch margins

· 12-point Times New Roman font

· Reference page (minimum of 4 scholarly sources)

Unit Lesson Our government is empowered to make political decisions that affect not only Americans, but also other countries, including both allies and enemies. Many things shape American public policy: political campaigns, world events, court cases, media attention, and almost anything one can think of that can bring an issue to the spotlight. Though the primary goal of setting policy is protecting the needs and interests of the United States and its citizens, there are often policies and decisions that look at a larger picture—one that appears to protect other nations above the interests of our own. Foreign Policy The American way is an ideal that we as United States citizens are willing to protect at all costs. Foreign policy is one of the ways that we protect our national interests. To do this, we make sure that our military is adequately prepared and that we have productive trade policies and relations. In many ways, Franklin D. Roosevelt’s great isolationists versus internationalists debate stemming from his Lend-Lease proposal remains a hot topic today. Are we better off immersing ourselves in world affairs, regardless of the risk to our own citizens and land, or are we better served by remaining neutral and avoiding involvement in other countries’ affairs? Such is the basis of American foreign policy. The State Department, headed by the secretary of state, coordinates foreign relations through embassies located in countries across the world. In order to do their work well, State Department officials and staff must have access to the most up-to-date intelligence available. This intelligence is gathered mostly through the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the National Security Agency (NSA). During the Spanish-American War, the United States branched out into world affairs for a time. Prior to and following World War I (WWI), the United States became a more isolationist country. We were more intent on building our infrastructure and consolidating our colonies than worrying about Europe and its ongoing disagreements. During World War II (WWII), we realized with the bombing of Pearl Harbor that we could no longer keep blinders on and pretend that what happened in Europe did not affect us. As a result, the United States became an internationalist country. From the end of WWII until the end of the 1980s, our Cold War with Russia and the containment of communism was the biggest push of our foreign affairs department. For most of the Cold War, Russia and the United States did not directly engage in combat, but instead moved behind the scenes diplomatically in various countries. The hottest parts of the Cold War were the Korean Conflict during the 1950s, the Vietnam Conflict, and the Cuban Missile Crisis. The Soviet Union would finally collapse at the end of the 1980s in no small part because of its massive amount of defense spending. This collapse would leave the United States as the world’s largest military power (Stratfor, 2016) http://www.ushistory.org/gov/11b.asphttp://www.ushistory.org/gov/11c.asphttp://www.ushistory.org/gov/11d.asphttps://edsitement.neh.gov/lesson-plan/great-debate-internationalists-vs-isolationists#sect-backgroundhttps://edsitement.neh.gov/lesson-plan/great-debate-internationalists-vs-isolationists#sect-background

With the collapse of the Soviet Union, the United States began to call for other countries to increase participation and respond collectively to problems around the world. This multilateralism was seen during the

first Gulf War as well as with the U.S. and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) forces used in Bosnia when the Serbs were committing genocide. Since the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, we have been fighting a war on terrorism. While this war on terrorism at first manifested in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, it is indeed a battle of many places and faces. The Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) has cost much in not only money but in the sense of security, safety, and human life. Terrorism has changed the way we travel, think, and live. The problem is that we are fighting an idea with many faces rather than a country with defined borders. Because of this new kind of war, the United States has sought to change its military into small and

highly mobile combat units that can fight wherever and whenever needed (Berkowitz, 2002). Economic Policy Along with fighting the world’s evil, the United States must also live and trade with the world. No longer can any country be an island unto itself, particularly one whose economy has become a global economy. There is one significant question: “Does the government direct the economy, or does the economy direct itself?” (Independence Hall Association, n.d.-b, para. 1). Spanning two broad categories of fiscal and monetary policy, U.S. economic policy has four major goals: stable markets, economic prosperity, business development, and protecting employment (Federal Reserve System, n.d.). Monetary policy is the government’s policy of controlling the money supply. Too much money in circulation leads to inflation, while too little leads to deflation or can even lead to a recession (Independence Hall Association, n.d.-b). Until the 20th century, the United States operated under a laissez-faire economic policy that required an open market (Independence Hall Association, n.d.-b). During the Great Depression, the concept of Keynesian economics emerged. This policy was the opposite of the laissez-faire strategy with a primary tenet that it was the government that should manage the economy (Independence Hall Association, n.d.-b). The debate over which strategy is best remains, as current policy lies somewhere between the two strategies. The American economy depends heavily on international commerce, and most businesses today are multinational corporations with offices and facilities all over the world. When one country falters in paying its debts, it starts to drag down all of the others. Since 2008, we have seen many countries, such as Greece and Cyprus, come close to defaulting on their loans only to be bailed out by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) so that the world’s economy can stabilize. Internationalism and multilateralism on a grand scale have been illustrated by the European Union (EU), though the manifestation of the potential negative effects of both have also become increasingly evident. Rising conflict regarding policy led to the United Kingdom’s exit from the EU, known as Brexit, in 2016 (“Eight Reasons Leave Won,” 2016). Domestic Policy The domestic policy-making process involves six primary steps: realization of a problem, setting an agenda to solve the problem, creating a policy to deal with the problems, and adopting, implementing, and evaluating

World Trade Center after the 9-11 attacks (Tourtellotte, 2001)

the policy (Independence Hall Association, n.d.-a). Domestic policy involves any policy related to actions and issues of national importance that occur within our borders. Some examples of domestic policy issues are healthcare, education, welfare, insurance, and labor. The United States uses a federalist form of government with a constitutionally expressed separation of the state and federal governments. More often than not, the lines become blurred as to who has jurisdiction. In April, 2010, the states of Arizona, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Rhode Island, Michigan, and Illinois decided to enact their own immigration laws. These states were protesting a federal government that was not protecting the borders from illegal aliens who were putting financial and systemic strains on their economies. As a result, individual plaintiffs, as well as the U.S. Department of Justice, filed lawsuits seeking to stop Arizona’s SB 1070 law, which added additional state requirements, crimes, and penalties related to the enforcement of immigration laws (Morse, 2011). In an analysis of the Supreme Court’s ruling on Arizona’s immigration enforcement laws, Ann Morse, the program director for the National Conference of State Legislatures, made the observation that SB 1070 is preempted specifically by the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 (IRCA). This preemption was a result of U.S. foreign policy and federal law. Based on research of similar cases and laws, Morse noted that the laws violated at least two clauses of the U.S. Constitution, the Supremacy Clause and the Commerce Clause (Morse, 2011). The U.S. Supreme Court upheld a portion of the Arizona SB 1070 law, but struck down other aspects. The majority opinion stated that although Arizona has legitimate frustrations with illegal immigrants, the state cannot create policies that undermine federal laws. Because of the unconstitutionality of portions of SB 1070, Morse (2011) noted that the U.S. Department of Justice filed injunctions before those portions could take effect. Regulatory policy is a large component of American domestic policy. Regulatory bodies regulate everything from what you eat to what you buy and where and how it is made. There are three basic categories of federal regulations: business, labor, and environment and energy. Regulatory policy has stemmed directly from the preamble to the Constitution where “promoting the general welfare” was prescribed (Independence Hall Association, n.d.-c). Public policy in America is a necessary but controversial subject, particularly in the land of the free where citizens often cite such freedoms as their right to ignore policy altogether.

What are the problems of existing technologies and how will the new technologies solve the problems?

Computers started out as monolithic devices that people could walk through, and now they can be worn like jewelry. The shrinking of computer size has led to many new and interesting uses.

Based on the topics you learned about in this module about digital devices and the MS Word skills you learned, write a short research paper discussing your findings about the latest developments of niche devices. You can search the Internet to identify the latest technologies, or a group of related technologies, and discuss their development. Your paper needs to be at least five pages long, including a cover page containing the title, an abstract page, and a reference page. You need to write up your paper by answering the following questions:

  • What is the technology you identified and what are the purposes and uses of this technology?
  • What are the problems of existing technologies and how will the new technologies solve the problems?
  • How will the new technologies change, support, or extend current ways of doing things?
  • Which group of people will benefit most from this new technology?
  • What is your opinion of using this new technology? Do you think this new technology will succeed? Or do you think it is just a passing fad, waiting to die off? Can you imagine a scenario where you are using the technology? What do you think is the main assumption of this technology? (For example, an assumption for a 3D TV is that people would not mind wearing 3D glasses while watching TV; an assumption for a smart watch is that people will use the watch while exercising or sleeping, and people will be comfortable using the small touch screen). Do you agree with these assumptions?

The paper should be 2 -3 pages, double space, 11-12 point font.

This paper will be about Race and how American films represent them using the information and addressing the questions below.  The paper should be 2 -3 pages, double space, 11-12 point font.  Title pages, graphs, pictures and the “Films Mentioned” section will not count toward the length of the paper.

  1. Think about your own national, ethnic, or racial heritage. To what extent does it shape your personal identity? Share your thoughts.
  2. Choose at least two American films that represents your national, ethnic, racial heritage, or personal identity. One film should show this in a positive light and one film in a neutral or negative way?  The films can come from any era and genre.
  3. Answer the following:
    1. Describe how the films depict your national, ethnic, racial heritage, or personal identity. Compare and contrast the films.
    2. Do the films help define or to construct a national identity and what is that national identity?
  4. Create a “Films Mentioned” section at the end of your paper and use the “Style Guide” found in the Syllabus content.

FYI:

an example for “Films Mentioned” section is attached as “style guide”.

In this Discussion, you examine a national healthcare issue and consider how that issue may impact your work setting. You also analyze how your organization has responded to this issue.

If you were to ask 10 people what they believe to be the most significant issue facing healthcare today, you might get 10 different answers. Escalating costs? Regulation? Technology disruption?

These and many other topics are worthy of discussion. Not surprisingly, much has been said in the research, within the profession, and in the news about these topics. Whether they are issues of finance, quality, workload, or outcomes, there is no shortage of changes to be addressed.

In this Discussion, you examine a national healthcare issue and consider how that issue may impact your work setting. You also analyze how your organization has responded to this issue.

To Prepare:

  • Review the Resources and select one current national healthcare issue/stressor to focus on.
  • Reflect on the current national healthcare issue/stressor you selected and think about how this issue/stressor may be addressed in your work setting.

Post a description of the national healthcare issue/stressor you selected for analysis, and explain how the healthcare issue/stressor may impact your work setting. Then, describe how your health system work setting has responded to the healthcare issue/stressor, including a description of what changes may have been implemented. Be specific and provide examples.

Explore different conditions that could be the cause of the skin abnormalities

Properly identifying the cause and type of a patient’s skin condition involves a process of elimination known as differential diagnosis. Using this process, a health professional can take a given set of physical abnormalities, vital signs, health assessment findings, and patient descriptions of symptoms, and incrementally narrow them down until one diagnosis is determined as the most likely cause.

In this Lab Assignment, you will examine several visual representations of various skin conditions, describe your observations, and use the techniques of differential diagnosis to determine the most likely condition.

To Prepare

Review the Skin Conditions document provided in this week’s Learning Resources, and select one condition to closely examine for this Lab Assignment.

Consider the abnormal physical characteristics you observe in the graphic you selected. How would you describe the characteristics using clinical terminologies?

Explore different conditions that could be the cause of the skin abnormalities in the graphics you selected.

Consider which of the conditions is most likely to be the correct diagnosis, and why.

Search the Walden library for one evidence-based practice, peer-reviewed article based on the skin condition you chose for this Lab Assignment.

Review the Comprehensive SOAP Exemplar found in this week’s Learning Resources to guide you as you prepare your SOAP note.

Download the SOAP Template found in this week’s Learning Resources, and use this template to complete this Lab Assignment.

The Lab Assignment

Choose one skin condition graphic (identify by number in your Chief Complaint) to document your assignment in the SOAP (Subjective, Objective, Assessment, and Plan) note format rather than the traditional narrative style. Refer to Chapter 2 of the Sullivan text and the Comprehensive SOAP Template in this week’s Learning Resources for guidance. Remember that not all comprehensive SOAP data are included in every patient case.

Use clinical terminologies to explain the physical characteristics featured in the graphic. Formulate a differential diagnosis of three to five possible conditions for the skin graphic that you chose. Determine which is most likely to be the correct diagnosis and explain your reasoning using at least three different references, one reference from current evidence-based literature from your search and two different references from this week’s Learning Resources.

Research a crime where the defendant’s capacity to commit the crime is an issue (insanity or committed by a minor) that has been reported in the media, (online, tv or print) and analyze the elements of the mental illness or age to the conduct charged.  This essay can be 1-2 pages and should include a citation to the source you used.

If you choose a crime that was committed by a minor, you should state whether the minor should be treated as an adult or as a minor, the different factors that are considered and whether you agree with how the case was handled. If the person was just charged with the crime but it hasn’t been decided, then you can provide your opinion on how it should be handled.  As long as you support your opinion with the factors addressed in the chapter.  This will require you to know about waiver, what age a minor is automatically treated as an adult regardless of the crime, (hint: NY and NC it’s 16, every other state it is 18).  However, a minor may be treated as an adult depending on the crime that was committed.  (But you knew that because you read the chapter.)  If discussing a crime where the defendant raised an insanity defense, identify the standard used in that state, and why the insanity defense applies/does not apply.  You can disagree with how the court handled the case as long as you support your opinion with the factors/elements used to determine if the person had the capacity to commit the crime.  Do not just identify the elements of a crime.   That is not the purpose of this essay.

Each essay should have a heading which includes your name, date and title. You should use proper titles if using last names–Mr. ; Ms.; Officer, etc.  Only referring to someone by their last name is not appropriate.  Make sure you proofread your essay for spelling and grammatical errors.  Do not just list the general elements of crime for this essay that is not the purpose of this essay.
