Utilizing the content from your assigned readings and online lectures, explain how you would manage an upset physician who wants to know why her schedule is behind and each department (Administrative Assistants, Nurses, Medical Assistants) are blaming one another for the delay. What can individuals and an organization do to prevent these types of issues and conflict from occurring?

Working in healthcare can be stressful at times, especially when you are trying to maintain multiple practitioners’ schedules and patient visits. Many times, schedules get delayed, which causes some frustration for the practitioner, staff, and patients. Effectively working with your coworkers will help to alleviate these issues.

Parker Family Episode 2 Program Transcript PARKER: Ever since my husband died, there’s been no one to talk to. It’s just, really, no one. And when Stephanie is home, I just feel so alone. FEMALE SPEAKER: What about the day center you go to? Isn’t that helping? PARKER: I don’t like it. What makes me really feel good, though, is when I go shopping, buying things. And my kittens. I love my cats. Oh, have you seen them? I have pictures. Just take a look. Look! These are so cute. My babies. FEMALE SPEAKER: Yes, they’re very cute. And wow, you have a lot of them.  PARKER: Oh, well, it’s their home, too, not just Princess Stephanie’s.  FEMALE SPEAKER: The day program you’re attending, are you seeing a  psychiatrist there?  PARKER: Yes. Dr. Lewin.  FEMALE SPEAKER: May I ask how that’s going?  PARKER: He says that I’m depressed.  FEMALE SPEAKER: In the pictures you showed me, you just talked about the  cats, but I also saw all the things you keep around you, the hoarding. I understand how depressed you been since your husband passed away. How alone you’ve felt. [SIGH] But I would like us to try and set up a plan to begin to address the hoarding. It’s very clear that that’s one of the big issues that’s affecting your relationship with Stephanie and your life together. Can we try that? PARKER: I don’t like it when we fight. She’s still my baby, too. Yes, I want to try.

roles of men and women as they move into Parenthood

Chapter 11 discussed the roles of men and women as they move into Parenthood.  According to the textbook, what statistical forces predict how involved a father is likely to be?  Briefly describe how you were raised (single family, 2 parents, supporting family members, etc.) and think about how these experiences impacted (positively and/or negatively) how you interact with your own children/family.

Each initial discussion response must be 250 words, not including restatements of questions, and each must contain two (2) formalized APA references with citations.

Discuss your library search strategies and briefly summarize the literature you reviewed. Focus your discussion on the “problem” and how the literature you identified provides evidence of the existence of the problem

Based on your specialty role option (i.e., Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Educator, Nurse Informaticist, Nurse Administrator), identify a potential problem (topic) that you would like to investigate through nursing research. Begin by reading the American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s (AACN) position statement on nursing research (Nursing Research).

Next explore South’s Online Library and conduct a search to locate a minimum of three nursing research articles that have addressed the problem you have identified. The literature may not be older than 5 years. After reading the literature respond to the following:

  1. Note your role specialization and briefly describe the problem you are interested in researching and why this is of interest to you.
  2. Discuss your library search strategies and briefly summarize the literature you reviewed. Focus your discussion on the “problem” and how the literature you identified provides evidence of the existence of the problem.
  3. Include in your discussion a potential innovation that you might consider as a solution to the problem identified.
  4. Include citations/references in APA style format, using citations where appropriate.

Each student in this course is required to complete a comprehensive research, analysis and writing assignment.  This paper is to focus on a specific crisis and provide an in-depth examination of alternative means of how it might have been managed.  It will count for 30 percent of the student’s grade for the semester.

Each student in this course is required to complete a comprehensive research, analysis and writing assignment.  This paper is to focus on a specific crisis and provide an in-depth examination of alternative means of how it might have been managed.  It will count for 30 percent of the student’s grade for the semester.

The following is designed to assist students carrying out this assignment.

  1. Students should identify and research a specific crisis that will serve as the general subject for this analysis.  Students are free to select a crisis of their own interest and choosing.  However, it is suggested that this crisis be sufficiently in the past and sufficiently well documented to allow for as much dispassionate analysis and assessment as possible.
  2. It is recommended that once research is completed, students select a specific participant and/or perspective on which to center their analysis and that they concentrate on one significant decision or turning point as the focus for this assignment.
  3. Students should then explore what other alternatives might have been – or should have been – available to the entity involved.

The paper will then detail a number of such alternate scenarios and examine:

  • What would have had to have been different for that alternative to have been undertaken
  • What its implications would have been (both positive and negative)
  • Whether there would have been any ethical issues or decisions involved
  • How other participants in the crisis might have reacted to such an approach
  • What strategies, tactics and activities the entity might have taken to maximize its gains and minimize its losses within this scenario
  • An assessment of how effective such an alternative might have been in preventing, managing, and/or capitalizing on the crisis

There is no required length for this paper.  However, it should reflect the fact that students have almost an entire semester in which to work on it, that it will account for 30 percent of each student’s final grade.

Finally, as with all academic work, students must appropriately attribute all outside sources or material that is not their own original thoughts or work. However, it is left to the student as to the specific form such citations take (i.e. footnotes, end notes, parenthetical inclusions, etc.).

Briefly summarize the primary health effects associated with overexposure to each type of metal fume, including both acute and chronic health effects. Explain what analytical methods you would use for evaluating health hazards in the workplace.

1.) Welding fumes are a common occupational exposure. Several different welding fumes can cause similar adverse health effects. Personal sampling of a welding operation at a manufacturing facility produced the following 8-hour time-weighted average (TWA) results for individual metal fumes. Please see attached document for sampling results.

Briefly summarize the primary health effects associated with overexposure to each type of metal fume, including both acute and chronic health effects. Explain what analytical methods you would use for evaluating health hazards in the workplace.

Identify the types of metal fumes that would produce similar health effects on an exposed worker. Assume that each listed metal can cause respiratory irritation. Use the equation in 1910.1000(d)(2)(i) to calculate the equivalent exposure (in relation to OSHA PELS) for the metal fumes with similar health effects based on the “Result” column in the table above. Discuss whether you believe any of the individual metal fume exposures or the combined exposure exceeds an OSHA PEL or an ACGIH TLV.

Your homework assignment should be a minimum of two pages in length.

2.) Choose an operation for a workplace where you once worked or with which you are familiar where either chemical hazards or noise exposures were present. If you have never worked in a location where chemical hazards or noise are present, read about some examples on OSHA’s website and choose one that interests you. Complete the following tasks in a minimum two-page (500 word) essay:

· Summarize the steps you would take to perform a hazard assessment of your chosen operation. Make sure you list the chemical hazards or noise hazards that are present using the example hazard assessment from OSHA’s website or one with which you are already familiar.

·  Discuss the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) for controlling occupational hazards in relation to the operation you chose.

·  Choose one hazard that you identified. The hazard can be a chemical or noise hazard. Summarize how you would evaluate employee exposures to the hazard. Include information about any sampling method you would use, how many samples you would collect, the types of samples you would collect (e.g., personal or area, TWA or short-term), and to which standards you would apply the results.

· Assume there are several results indicating that employees are exposed to levels exceeding the applicable OSHAPEL. Using OSHA’s Hierarchy of Controls, summarize the control methods you would employ to reduce the risk for employees to an acceptable level. Your summary should include examples from each level of OSHA’s Hierarchy of Controls with a discussion of why you think the control would or would not be an effective method for reducing the exposure to an acceptable level.

· Discuss how you would evaluate the effectiveness of the control methods you chose, both in the short-term and for the next 5 years.

Your essay must be in APA format, and include a minimum of two sourc

A case study is a collection of facts and data based on a real or hypothetical business situation

How to Solve an Organizational Case Study – Second Case

A case study is a collection of facts and data based on a real or hypothetical business situation.  The goal of a case study is to enhance your ability to solve business problems, using a logical framework.  The issues in a case are generally not unique to a specific person, firm, or industry, and they often deal with more than one business strategy element.  Sometimes, the material presented in a case may be in conflict.  For example, two managers may disagree about a strategy or there may be several interpretations of the same facts.

In all case studies, you must analyze what is presented and state which specific actions best resolve major issues.  These actions must reflect the information in the case and the environment facing the firm.

The case should not exceed seven (7) pages in length, excluding the reference list.

STEPS IN SOLVING A CASE STUDY

Your analysis should include these sequential steps:

1. Presentation of the facts surrounding the case. (~0.5 page)

2. Identification of the key issues. (~0.5 page)

3. Listing of alternative courses of action that could be taken. (~1 page)

4. Evaluation of alternative courses of action. (~1.5 pages)

5. Recommendation of the best course of action. (~1.5 pages)

Presentation of the Facts Surrounding the Case

It is helpful to read a case until you are comfortable with the information in it.  Re-readings often are an aid to comprehending facts, possible strategies, or questions that need clarification and were not apparent earlier.  In studying a case, assume you are an outside consultant hired by the firm.  While facts should be accepted as true, statements, judgments, and decisions made by the individuals in a case should be questioned, especially if not supported by facts—or when one individual disagrees with another.

During your reading of the case, you should underline crucial facts, interpret figures and charts, critically review the comments made by individuals, judge the rationality of past and current decisions, and prepare questions whose answers would be useful in addressing the key issue(s).

Identification of the Key Issue(s)

The facts stated in a case often point to the key issue(s) facing an organization, such as new opportunities, a changing environment, a decline in competitive position, or excess inventories.  Identify the characteristics and ramifications of the issue(s) and examine them, using the material in the case and the text.  Sometimes, you must delve deeply because the key issue(s) and their characteristics may not be immediately obvious.

Listing Alternative Courses of Action That Could Be Taken

Next, present alternative actions pertaining to the key issue(s) in the case.  Consider courses of action based on their suitability to the firm and situation.  Proposed courses of action should take into account such factors as the goals, the customer market, the overall organizational strategy, the product assortment, competition, and personnel capabilities.

Evaluation of Alternative Courses of Action

Evaluate each potential option, according to case data, the key issue(s), the strategic concepts in the text, and the firm’s environment.  Specific criteria should be used and each option analyzed on the basis of them.  The ramifications and risks associated with each alternative should be considered.  Important data not included in the case should be mentioned. Your discussion of the alternatives should include concepts from organizational diagnosis and change theory.

Recommendation of the Best Course of Action

Be sure your analysis is not just a case summary.  You will be evaluated on the basis of how well you identify key issues or problems, outline and assess alternative courses of action, and reach realistic conclusions (that take the organization’s size, competition, image, and so on into consideration).  You need to show a good understanding of both the principles of organizational diagnosis and the case.  Be precise about which alternative is more desirable for the organization in its current context.  Remember, your goal is to apply a logical reasoning process to this organization. A written report must demonstrate this process.

ment provides a forum for analyzing and evaluating relevant topics of this week on the basis of the course competencies covered.

Introduction:

In each of the previous weeks, you had the opportunity to explore an ethical theory—consequential ethics, utilitarian ethics, deontological ethics, and nonconsequential ethics—in the context of a case scenario from your textbook. In this week, the focus will be on how those ethical paradigms apply to legal issues involving patient abuse.

Tasks:

Review the following case:

The defendant in State v. Cunningham, the owner, and administrator of a residential care facility housed thirty to thirty-seven mentally ill, mentally retarded, and senior residents. The Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals conducted various surveys at the defendant’s facility between October 1989 and May 1990. All of the surveys except one resulted in a fifty-dollar daily fine assessed against the defendant for violations of the regulations.

On August 16, 1990, a grand jury filed an indictment charging the defendant with several counts of wanton neglect of a resident in violation of the Iowa Code section 726.7 (1989), which provides, “A person commits wanton neglect of a resident of a healthcare facility when the person knowingly acts in a manner likely to be injurious to the physical, mental, or moral welfare of a resident of a healthcare facility. . . . Wanton neglect of a resident of a healthcare facility is a serious misdemeanor.”

The district court held that the defendant had knowledge of the dangerous conditions that existed in the healthcare facility but willfully and consciously refused to provide or to exercise adequate supervision to remedy or attempt to remedy the dangerous conditions. The residents were exposed to physical dangers and unhealthy and unsanitary physical conditions and were grossly deprived of the much-needed medical care and personal attention. The conditions were likely to and did cause injury to the physical and mental well-being of the facility’s residents. The defendant was found guilty on five counts of wanton neglect. The district court sentenced the defendant to one year in jail for each of the five counts, to run concurrently. The district court suspended all but two days of the defendant’s sentence and ordered him to pay $200 for each count, plus a surcharge and costs, and to perform community service. A motion for a new trial was denied, and the defendant appealed.

The Iowa Court of Appeals held that there was substantial evidence to support a finding that the defendant was responsible for not properly maintaining the nursing facility, which led to prosecution for wanton neglect of the facility’s residents. The defendant was found guilty of knowingly acting in a manner likely to be injurious to the physical or mental welfare of the facility’s residents by creating, directing, or maintaining hazardous conditions and unsafe practices. The facility was not properly maintained (for example, findings included broken glass in patients’ rooms, excessive hot water in faucets, dried feces on public bathroom walls and grab bars, insufficient towels and linens, cockroaches and worms in the food preparation area, no soap available in the kitchen, and at one point, only one bar of soap and one container of shampoo found in the entire facility). Dietary facilities were unsanitary and inadequate to meet the dietary needs of the residents. There were inadequate staffing patterns and supervision in the facility, and improper dosages of medications were administered to the residents.

The defendant argued that he or she did not “create” the unsafe conditions at the facility. The court of appeals disagreed. The statute does not require that the defendant create the conditions at the facility to sustain a conviction. The defendant was the administrator of the facility and responsible for the conditions that existed.

In a 5- to 7-page document, complete the following tasks:

  • Analyze this case from the perspective of the four ethical theories presented throughout the course—consequential ethics, utilitarian ethics, deontological ethics, and nonconsequential ethics.
  • Discuss how ethics and the law are intertwined in this case.
  • Present your assessment of the court’s finding and whether it was just.

As in all assignments, cite your sources in your work and provide references for the citations in APA format. Must have an Introduction, body, headings, and a conclusion.

In a 3-4-page paper explore a workplace organization and their policies around diversity. Analyze the diversity of the organization and develop a report about how you would bring a new workshop, event, or speaker series to the organization to enrich their approach to diversity. If the organization has a great program already in place, think about how you might contribute to what they already have.

Option #2: Valuing Diversity in the Workplace Report

In a 3-4-page paper explore a workplace organization and their policies around diversity. Analyze the diversity of the organization and develop a report about how you would bring a new workshop, event, or speaker series to the organization to enrich their approach to diversity. If the organization has a great program already in place, think about how you might contribute to what they already have.

Choose a workplace organization (the one you’re employed with or perhaps one you would like to work for) and review their policies on embracing diversity. A good place to research this information is on a company’s human resources page. You can also look at some public information data for an organization on the Glass Door (Links to an external site.) website. If your organization is a public organization (college, university, government employment agency, or nonprofit), that information will be public and on the organization’s website.

  • For this assignment, you should focus on race and ethnicity, because this Module deals with race and ethnicity, but note also that diversity includes ability, age, religion, gender, sexuality, etc.
  • Consider how this event might help the organization’s staff use their creativity and awareness to imagine a community which truly values diversity.
  • Brainstorm what this community would be like if they had an environment which truly valued racial and ethnic diversity, based on the research you conducted.
  • Feel free to explore different sorts of diversity activities listed on the Internet, but you must come up with your own activity.
  • Conduct research using scholarly sources to review Affirmative Action policies regarding education and employment as well as making sure you have done all of the reading for this week before completing your assignment.

Instructions:

  • Write a 3-4-page paper or about 1500 words, not including the title and reference pages, which are required. Be sure to incorporate a clear explanation of your proposed activity in the body of your paper, with detail, context, and analysis. This is important.
  • Your paper must be properly cited and formatted according to the CSU-Global Guide to Writing and APA (Links to an external site.).
  • Include a formal Reference page. This is an individual paper, however, you should reflect on our Discussion Forums and incorporate ideas from there, as appropriate.
  • You must support your analysis with at least three scholarly references and can include resources from this course. Sources such as Wikipedia, USA Today, Fox News, or MSNBC news will not be accepted. The CSU-Global Library (Links to an external site.) is a good place to find these sources.
  • Turn the paper in via the Module 3 Critical Thinking folder and select the Submit Assignment button.

Unless home support is put in place for Theresa, she has to continue hospitalization unless she is guaranteed 24-hour care at home. The grandchildren decided to hire home care for their grandmother, and Theresa was discharged home. Case management permitted to discharge and maintenance at home. Unfortunately, Theresa passed away within 20 days of discharge. The business department had prepared the bill for services rendered to her. The bill included the following:

  • Fee for hospital stay per day was $ 700
  • Home health expenses were $ 2,000 within a network and $1,500 for outside of network providers
  • Case management fees were $ 750 (due to an effective case management strategy, the family was able to save some money)

Using the case study above, complete the following:

  • Prepare a confidential case report for Theresa showing net cost savings as a result of effective case management.
  • Prepare a case identification process for Theresa regarding her visit to the hospital.
  • What would you do as a potential health care administrator to improve the quality of care of a skilled nursing facility that you have been hired to head?

Warehouse scheduling is the problem of sequencing re- quests for products

Warehouse scheduling is the problem of sequencing re- quests for products (i.e., customer orders) so as to min- imize the average time required to fill an order and the amount of product left in inventory. Product can be taken from the warehouse or directly from the production line. The time required to fill an order depends on whether product comes from the production line or whether prod- uct must be move out of inventory. Moving from inventory is slower, but only a small fraction of all possible product types are being produced at any point in time.

The problem is complex due to several factors. First, the search space is quite large: all possible sequences of all orders. Several hundred possible orders are considered for each schedule. Optimization involves several distinct per- formance measures, which can be inversely related. Eval- uating a schedule is costly; a simulation is used to deter- mine when enough of the needed product is available and how long it takes to move product from its starting loca- tion (warehouse or production line) to its transport (rail car or truck).

Search algorithms can be easily applied to warehouse scheduling. However, given the expense of schedule eval- uation and the number of possible schedules, knowledge- poor search algorithms may be too costly. Heuristic-based methods provide a promising alternative, as they explic- itly leverage domain knowledge to directly construct can- didate schedules.

To assess the trade-offs between search and heuristic methods, we compared a variety of standard optimization

techniques. These algorithms fall into three basic cat- egories: stochastic search, domain-based heuristics, and hybrid systems. We investigated three stochastic search techniques: a genetic algorithm and two local search oper- ators. We implemented our own order sequencing heuris- tic and used it in two different contexts for building sched- ules. First, it is used directly as a greedy construction procedure. Second, it is used as the heuristic compo- nent of Limited Discrepancy Search (LDS), a systematic AI search method that has performed well on synthetic test problems in the job shop scheduling domain. Hy- brid approaches combine the stochastic search methods (i.e., the genetic algorithm and the local search methods search techniques) with the heuristics: heuristically gen- erated solutions are used to initialize the stochastic search methods. We describe these approaches in more detail in Section III.

We compared the scheduling methods using three per- formance metrics: schedule makespan, average time to fill an order, and average total inventory (see Section II). The values for the performance metrics were obtained from a coarse-grain simulator we developed. We also developed a more detailed, fine grain simulator. The coarse-grain simulator was used as the objective function in our exper- iments because of the expense of the more detailed sim- ulation. While run-time was substantially reduced, the loss in granularity necessarily produced some inaccuracy in the performance measurements. We refer to the coarse- grained simulation as the “internal simulator” (since it is internal to the optimization procedure) and the detailed simulator as the “external simulator.”

We found that methods combining stochastic search with heuristic initialization significantly outperform heuristic-based methods, given equal amounts of compu- tation. Section IV provides detailed results. Furthermore, the globally motivated search of the genetic algorithm out- performs the local search algorithms. However, heuristic- based methods are not without merit; hybridization of the stochastic search algorithms with heuristic-based initial- ization further improves performance.

A key features of the Limited Discrepancy Search (LDS) is the use of backtracking to undo some number of heuris- tic decisions. We also find that the backtracking of LDS

fails to overcome the deficiencies of the greedy heuristic construction procedure for this particular domain.

The total number of evaluations is limited to 100,000 in our experiments. Thus, our conclusions may not gener- alize to situations where the number of total evaluations is different. We limited total evaluations for two reasons. First, this was done in order to limit total search time to a reasonable amount of time. Second, the largest improve- ments in the objective function appear to occur within the first 100,000 evaluations. Improvement is asymptotic after this point. Given that the fast internal simulator is weakly correlated with the detailed external simula- tor, it is unclear that further optimization with respect to the internal simulator actually translates into further improvement in the external simulator. We are currently investigating this question further.

The Role of Financial Management in a Firm

Examine the role of management as it relates to finance in a corporation. In your post, discuss the role of management by addressing the following prompts:

· Explain the various aspects of finance that management must understand.

· Describe why a manager needs to understand the characteristics and importance of financial markets including their liquidity, competitiveness, and efficiency.

· Interpret the function of the Financial Balance Sheet in assisting in management’s decision making process.

· Discuss what could happen if management does not fulfill responsibilities related to finance. Share a real world example from your own professional experience or from an external source.

Your post should be 200-250 words in length.

Respond to Peggy Harvey post

There are many different aspects of finance that management must understand. As mentioned in the text Managerial finance (2013), management is involved in business forecasting, planning processes, analyzing, evaluation, as well as understanding legal/regulatory issues. All of these areas  that management are required to understand aid in the success or failure of the company.

It is important for management to understand the characteristics of financial planning so that they can embody these characteristics and enforce them across the entire company. These attributes aides management in the process of creating security or stability for their company without it coming at a huge cost reduction for the company. Those particular characteristics and abilities promotes for efficiency in the company; and also gives the company a competitive drive.

If management took a stance to not fulfill these responsibilities to finance the business could suffer a very short life span, and lose their advantage over competitors. A real life example of this is the downfall of Blockbuster video. It does not appear that those in management with the  company successfully forecasted the growth of technology and how that could affect their business. There are companies such as Netflix that could have been their running competition. However; I believe their company began to go downhill before they had a chance to gain control of things.

In the world of finance and business, every member of the leadership needs to understand the value their product or service has is given or taken by the customer.  “Financial management involves planning, forecasting, analysis, and evaluation, as well as understanding legal and regulatory issues” (Byrd, 2013). In my field the value of having a tumor removed by three small incisions is priceless, the value is given by the sick patient that has a quick recovery and a decreased chance of infection. The same value would lose its luster to a healthy individual that does not need surgery. Managers in all organizations need to understand SWOT and the benefits of identifying strengths and weaknesses. Managers that do not understand the influence the market has on their products or services will not be equipped to make the necessary changes the market may have by virtue of market variance. The tangible roles and responsibilities of a finance manager are extensive; bookkeeping, reporting, and analysis, as well as financial allocation.  I have served in healthcare management for many years and the difference between federal and public hospitals is like day and night. Federal hospitals have very little competition and the ability to make changes in accordance with market trends is nonexistent. Private hospitals panic during the beginning of every fiscal year since the insured must meet high deductibles and copays before they are able to access the hospitals’ services.

Discussion 2

Short Term View or Long Term View?

After reading the first two chapters of your textbook, evaluate the following statement:

Managers should not focus on the current stock value because doing so will lead to overemphasis on short-term profits at the expense of long-term profits.

In your post, explain what is meant by this statement. Describe how management might decide whether to focus on short term or long term goals and how that decision impacts the organization. Next, using the financial balance sheet as displayed in the text, compute an example of how focusing on short term profits can be detrimental to long term profits. Share your opinion regarding whether you feel it’s a better option to focus on short term or long term goals. Use evidence from the text or external sources to support your position. Your post should be 200-250 words in length. Guided Response: Review several of your classmates’ postings. Respond to two classmates by sharing whether you agree or disagree with their view of managerial profit focus and provide advice on how to overcome the challenges they have identified.

Respond to Nicholas Manzella post

Concentrating on what you have right in front of you leaves no room for future planning.  Similar to a person planning for their future, one will need to look at how things can play out over time.  This is the reason people start bank accounts and 401K’s.  Certainly, when a company looks at the immediate future, they can see how successful or unsuccessful they may become, but some bit of concentration should be dedicated to future projects and how they may be able to continually lead the company to future success.  The manager must look at all possibilities for short and long-term projects.  If something that could be a long-term possibility looks as if it may cause harm to the company, they should elect to steer in a different direction.  “Long-term is important, because corporate managers cannot use deceitful means over an extended period of time to take advantage of stockholders’ trust” (Byrd, Hickman, & McPherson, 2013).  When considering whether short-term or long-term goals are the way to go for the company, the manager should consider how the goals will affect the company.  Something very important for the manager to consider is the current status of the company.  If the company is not in financial shape for any new goals, they should consider clearing up the financial issues. Another idea could be to look at how past goals, whether short-term or long-term, affected the company.  Knowing how things happened in the past, may influence how the goals are sought after in the future.  When thinking of how a company should choose between short-term or long-term goals, I would play it similar to my 401K, middle of the road.  Finding a happy medium between both types of goals would likely be beneficial to the company.  If a company can find a good balance of goals to choose, it will help a company succeed.  This will also help if there are sudden issues with one of the goals chosen, which could be abandoned with the hopes that other goals may resolve the issues that have arisen.

Respond to Stephanie Martin post

In the text, Byrd, Hickman, and McPherson state that since managers are employees of their stockholders, it is their responsibility to raise stockholders’ long-term wealth as well as the firm’s long-term value (2013).  In order to project a plan for a profitable future, managers cannot solely focus on short-term stock value.  That is the same as considering the status quo to be sufficient, and the company does not need to grow or change to remain profitable.

If managers are too focused on short-term goals, they may not utilize the necessary funding to plan for the future, because they want to hold onto the current cash flow.  By using investment funds on research and development, increased plant capacity, or new equipment that will make production more efficient, they may not achieve short-term profitability goals, but they are setting themselves up for a more profitable future.  A future company will benefit from the investment of more highly trained employees.  A future company will benefit from fewer quality complaints or recalls due to the investment of X-ray machines at the end of production lines.  You should always look at the “big picture”, however, because if a manager focuses too much on the future, they may overextend the company today.  It is also important to always look forward to set the company up for future success.  A profitable company with a strong business plan will be reflective in their stock prices.

An example on how focusing on short-term profits may be detrimental to long-term profits is when a company undertakes a significant workforce reduction towards the end of an unprofitable fiscal year.  Although they may make their financial budgets or goals by laying off so much staff, they are hurting the future company.  Remaining associates will be over-worked and morale issues will increase.  Since training also was not an approved investment, the quality of the product and customer satisfaction will decrease.

The Capella Writing Center is a great asset when determining how to aligned and develop my paper.

Self-Assessment

The self assessment helped me refresh many of the skills I have become too comfortable with to further advance. Beginning with Bloom’s Taxonomy, the course introduced a different perspective and purpose behind individual approach to research and literary production (Persaud, 2018). How the resources provided are viewed can dictate an individual’s approach and perspective on what is considered ethical and credible. The goal behind doctrine level writing may different but should follow a certain construct to retain its integrity. The Writing Assessment reminded me to remain open to credible sources, refresh my APA formatting and to utilize said sources in a manner that reflects *excellence.

Discussions, Thus Far

The discussions have been interesting and have made me think, more than I expected. I almost feel ashamed for not expecting this level of intuitiveness from the course given the expectations of a doctrine degree. Sometimes courses only seem to address content from one perspective, giving me a falsified sense of “what to expect”. The very way the course has addressed simple ideas and questions has pushed me pass my current understanding of psychology and into a realm where I, once again, wish to know more or see the outcome. It has been a while since I was this intrigued by a course’s discussions, especially one centered on writing.

Feedback

Last week’s feedback should have been my biggest concern for this week’s response. Proofreading has always been one of my greatest disappointments as my process for review has been flawed for a while now. I will often begin by writing a great paper and verifying my points have been met. Each section is written and proofread as I scribe them. In many cases, particularly when adjustments are made, I forget to reproof the changes made. When rushing, I often continue to my next section without notice. As a result, when done, I now have an extensive number of pages which need to be reproofed (again) and small issues may slip through the crack such as wording, phrasing, punctuation, spelling or correct dictation. Remembering the goal and purpose of doctrine level writing and the feedback will support a more apprehensive approach to my proofreading on a continuous level.

Smarthinking

I have not yet submitted my Discussion 3 or 4 to Smarthinking yet but I will do so once I have proofed my Unit 4 Discussion again, per the instructor feedback received. I would like an additional review of my post but not with what I already understand as an issue. I would like to correct these mishaps first and then utilize Smarthinking to evaluate my writing skills. Improvement is my goal and my writing is now beginning to develop based on the purposes selected during composition. This course has shown me that my writing can be more than a grade when applying the correct method for presentation. The creation of viable sources is also a goal I plan to achieve.

Important Aspects

Three aspects I find important in writing are: integrity (as it relates to honest and credible sourcing), alignment (content and purpose) and flow. Capella offers many resources to assist into the development of my writing style and skills. Academic Integrity and Plagiarism Is a document, available for download, detailing the need for honest and productive writing. Many organizations will offer similar resources as guidance to how research should be approached. This form of assistance helps provide a constant and accessible resource on the policy as well as a statement of Capella’s dedication to the credible application of writing. The Capella Writing Center is a great asset when determining how to aligned and develop my paper. Coupled with resources such as Capella Library, Youtube and Google, locating references, guides, research and data is seamless easy and comprehensive. The articles found within the Library and podcast located on Youtube also assist in how the flow of doctrine level writing is completed. Graduate Savvy has supported many of my formatting concerns while concepts like Bloom’s Taxonomy And Ruscio’s discussions of pseudoscience have helped shaped how my research should be used in order to retain the balances* necessary to produce credible primary and secondary sources of content (Persaud, 2018).

Knowledge of God, Knowledge of Ethics.

A key component of the foundations of Christian spirituality and ethics as described above is the view that people can have genuine knowledge of God and knowledge of right and wrong. A few observations about the word knowledge need to be considered. First, by knowledge we mean the opposite of mere opinion. Knowledge is more than just an educated guess; it is being in touch with the real world as it really is. Thus, knowledge in this sense is not merely subjective, but is rather an objective description of reality. For example, the proposition “the earth is round” is an objectively true description of reality, even if some people happen to subjectively deny that the earth is round. Subjective beliefs may be true or false. What would make subjective beliefs true would be if they matched the real objective world. Fundamentally, knowledge is the possession and awareness of truth.

There are two philosophies, however, that stand in contrast to the Christian belief that one can have knowledge of God and knowledge of right and wrong, namely scientism and postmodernism. These two philosophies are very influential in today’s society, although they are not compatible with the Christian worldview. It is important to understand these philosophies because not only are they not compatible with the Christian worldview, they arguably have negative effects on the practice of medicine and health care.

Scientism

Although the term scientism has the word science in it, it is crucial to recognize that (1) scientism is not the same thing as (2) science. In the Christian worldview, science is a great and good thing. In fact, the Christian worldview has always encouraged careful investigation of the natural world. In the Christian worldview, medical technology is considered a good gift from God insofar as God has created the kind of world that has a structure that can be discovered and manipulated to bring about the good of human beings (Rae & Cox, 1999). Scientism, however, is not compatible with the Christian worldview. Scientism is the belief that the best or only way to have any knowledge of reality is by means of the sciences (Moreland & Craig, 2003, pp. 346-350). In other words, if something is not known scientifically then it is not known at all, and the only way to hold true beliefs about anything is to know them scientifically.

That may sound reasonable and even commonsense, but there are two problems with scientism: (1) scientism is a self-refuting philosophy, and (2) science has clear limits. First, if the only way to have true beliefs is through science, then the thesis of scientism itself (“the only way to have any knowledge of the world”) could not be true because it cannot be proven scientifically. Thus, the thesis of scientism fails its own truth test. Scientism’s thesis is, in fact, a philosophical statement. Philosophers call such propositions self-refuting because they invalidate themselves by definition, similarly to someone claiming, “I cannot speak a word of English.”

Second, while science is a powerful way of gaining knowledge of the natural world, science is limited and is not the only way of gaining knowledge. Consider the following two limitations of science (though there are many others); science cannot tell us anything about (1) ethics or (2) how one ought to use the results of science (University of California Museum of Paleontology, n.d.). Science is wonderful and describes the way things are, but it has no authority to tell us what we ought to do morally. Science cannot tell me whether or not I ought to love my spouse, keep my promises, or give to the poor. Even when it comes to ethical issues that involve science, science cannot determine what the right thing to do would be. For example, science might be able to describe the nasty effects of a terminal disease on a person or explain the state of a person’s brain if that person is in a vegetative state. However, science cannot determine whether euthanasia or physician-assisted suicide is good, bad, right, or wrong. Science also cannot determine how scientific data and results ought to be used. Science might enable the discovery of chemical processes or structures, but should the results be used for creating biotechnology to engineer human DNA? Should the results of scientific research be used to create bioweapons for military purposes? Such questions are beyond the bounds of what science can answer. Remember scientism is NOT science; it is a philosophical thesis that claims that science is the only methodology to gain knowledge and that every other claim to knowledge is either mere opinion or false. However, as Nicholas Rescher remarks, “to take this stance [of scientism] is not to celebrate science but to distort it” (as cited in Moreland & Craig, 2003).

Postmodern Relativism

Postmodernism is a broad philosophical position that claims that there is no such thing as truth or an objective reality that can be known. A common way in which postmodernism is expressed is through a view called relativism. Relativism is the view that there is no such thing as truth in the common sense of that concept. Every claim about the nature of reality is simply relative to either an individual or a society/culture. Another way to put this is to say that truth is invented by people (whether it is individuals or entire societies) instead of being discovered. According to this way of thinking, there is not genuine truth to be had or known, only subjective opinions or beliefs. While certain questions are no doubt  matters of subjective opinion, such as “what is the best flavor of ice cream?” or “what is the proper way to shake hands?” not all questions are. This is most clearly seen when we consider moral or ethical propositions about right or wrong. It would be a serious mistake to claim that the propositions “murder is wrong” or “racism is evil” are mere subjective matters of opinion. However, that is what relativism implies. If all truth including morality is simply a human invention, then there is no standard for genuine truth, and it follows that there is no genuine right or wrong. However, this is certainly false. Whether or not the Nazi party, made up of thousands of individuals, believed that killing 6 million Jews was a good thing, we have to say without any hesitation that they were genuinely wrong. But it is not possible to be wrong unless there is genuine objective truth to be known.

Both scientism and postmodern relativism are incompatible with the foundations of Christian spirituality and ethics. The Christian worldview holds science in high regard and accepts it as one of the most powerful communal ways of obtaining knowledge about the world. However, contrary to scientism, the Christian worldview does not accept science as the only way of knowing things about the world. Secondly, contrary to postmodern relativism, the Christian worldview holds that genuine objective knowledge of God and of right and wrong is possible. It follows then that who God is and what is right and wrong are not merely matters of subjective opinion, but genuine truths to be discovered.

Conclusion

The foundations discussed above provide the framework for Christian ways of ethical and spiritual decision-making in health care. It is important to understand therefore that the Christian way of ethical and spiritual decision-making is distinct from other worldviews and is not the same as Buddhist, Muslim, or even atheist ways of ethical and spiritual decision-making. It is not fair or respectful to paint all religions or worldviews with the same brush under the heading of “spirituality” and ignore the differences.

Topic 2 will discuss a foundational principle to the practice of medicine and health care, as well as bioethics namely, the principle of respect for persons. The Christian worldview goes even further and states all human beings are made in the image of God and therefore have intrinsic value and are worthy of dignity and respect.

Topic 3 will discuss the field of bioethics and introduce some of the main methodologies of ethical decision-making in health care. The focus in this section will be on the methodology called principlism which stresses the application of four moral principles to all ethical decisions in health care. Prinipalism will be used and interpreted in light of the Christian worldview and the overarching narrative presented in the Bible.

Topic 4 will briefly introduce issues of death, dying, and grief. The focus will be on ethical issues at the end of life and the Christian worldview regarding death in light of the biblical narrative and the hope of resurrection inaugurated by the person and work of Jesus Christ.

Topic 5 will conclude with discussion about the facilitating of ethical and spiritual decision-making for patients, and the practical application of the principles and tools introduced in this course.

What could you determine about a specimen if you observed a slide image showing the specimen with a cell wall, but no nucleus or mitochondria?

This contains 100% correct material for UMUC Biology 103 LAB03. However, this is an Answer Key, which means, you should put it in your own words. Here is a sample for the Pre lab questions answered:

Pre-Lab Questions

1. Identify the major similarities and differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. (2 pts)

Prokaryotes tend to be less complex than eukaryotic cells, with fewer organelles and (generally) fewer requirements for survival. Eukaryotes have a nucleus, while prokaryotes do not. Both eukaryotes and prokaryotes have DNA, a cell membrane, and cytoplasm.

2. Where is the DNA housed in a prokaryotic cell? Where is it housed in a eukaryotic cell? (2 pts)

DNA is housed in the nucleus in eukaryotic cells. Prokaryotic cells do not have a nucleus, and thus DNA exists freely in the cytoplasm.

3. Identify three structures which provide support and protection in a eukaryotic cell. (2 pts)

The cell membrane, the cytoplasm, and the cytoskeleton (microtubules, microfilaments, etc.).

The rest of the questions are answered as well:

Experiment 1: Cell Structure and Function

Post-Lab Questions

1.    Label each of the arrows in the following slide image:

2.    What is the difference between the rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum?

3.    Would an animal cell be able to survive without a mitochondria? Why or why not?

4.    What could you determine about a specimen if you observed a slide image showing the specimen with a cell wall, but no nucleus or mitochondria?

5.    Hypothesize why parts of a plant, such as the leaves, are green, but other parts, such as the roots, are not. Use scientific reasoning to support your hypothesis.

Experiment 2: Osmosis – Direction and Concentration Gradients

Data Tables and Post-Lab Assessment

Table 3: Sucrose Concentration vs. Tubing Permeability

Hypothesis:

Post-Lab Questions

1.    For each of the tubing pieces, identify whether the solution inside was hypotonic, hypertonic, or isotonic in comparison to the beaker solution in which it was placed.

2.    Which tubing increased the most in volume? Explain why this happened.

3.    What do the results of this experiment this tell you about the relative tonicity between the contents of the tubing and the solution in the beaker?

4.    What would happen if the tubing with the yellow band was placed in a beaker of distilled water?

5.    How are excess salts that accumulate in cells transferred to the blood stream so they can be removed from the body? Be sure to explain how this process works in terms of tonicity.

6.    If you wanted water to flow out of a tubing piece filled with a 50% solution, what would the minimum concentration of the beaker solution need to be? Explain your answer using scientific evidence.

7.    How is this experiment similar to the way a cell membrane works in the body? How is it different? Be specific with your response.

The format of your paper will need to follow the following outline in APA format (include title page, abstract page, content pages, and reference page):

Pick  a topic relevant to Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Planning  and write a 10 page paper.  The format of your paper will need to follow  the following outline in APA format (include title page, abstract page,  content pages, and reference page):

INTRODUCTION

  • State the topic you are attempting to cover
  • State the issues involved
  • State why we should be concerned with resolving whatever issues are involved
  • State how answering the issues will help us
  • State the implications and consequences of dealing with or resolving the issues involved

REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE (5 sources minimal, at least 3 needs to be peer-reviewed)
Identify who has tried to answer the question before by doing the following:

  • Summarize how each of the sources presents and deals with the subject
  • Explain how each source presents and deals with its findings or results
  • Explain the relevancy of each source to your topic
  • State what you learned from each of your sources
  • State in what way(s) each source contributes to answering your issues

DISCUSSION

  • State your answer to your issue
  • State  how and elaborate on how, explain how, illustrate how each of the  sources you previously reviewed help you answer your issue
  • State what questions about your topic you still have that your sources may not have answered

CONCLUSIONS

  • Indicate  how each of the sources have contributed to your conclusions (and  clearly, accurately, correctly document those sources within your text)
  • State the implications of your conclusions
  • State what might be the possible consequences of your conclusions
  • State  the significance these implications and consequences might have in the  information technology / information security realm

DOCUMENTATION

  • On  a separate page, include a section labeled References which provides  the full publication information for all the sources you used in your  paper
  • You should have a MINIMUM of five (5) sources for your paper, at least 3 source needs to be peer-reviewed
  • Not meeting this minimum requirement of five (5) sources will lead to a lower evaluation of your paper for each missing source
  • Use APA format for documenting your sources

In this assessment, you demonstrate that you can provide an evidence-based conclusion to an uncertain clinical situation. It requires you to search for relevant research, understand levels of evidence, consider the quality of evidence, present the summary of each article, interpret their findings, and reach a conclusion based on your reviewed evidence.

Intent

In this assessment, you demonstrate that you can provide an evidence-based conclusion to an uncertain clinical situation. It requires you to search for relevant research, understand levels of evidence, consider the quality of evidence, present the summary of each article, interpret their findings, and reach a conclusion based on your reviewed evidence.

Task: You have been provided with three clinical scenarios. Each scenario indicates an area of clinical uncertainty. Select a scenario that interests you and using your evidenced based practice skills answer the question that follows.

Scenario 1:

In the course of your clinical placement in a surgical ward, you noted inconsistency in wound care. While some nurses use a sterile technique, others employ a clean dressing change technique.

Is clean wound dressing a safe option for dressing of surgical wounds?

Scenario 2:

You are working on a hospital ward where you encounter stroke patients. You notice that some doctors order compression stockings for prevention of deep venous thrombosis while others not.

Should antithrombotic stockings be routinely used for patients with stroke or not?

Scenario 3:

You are working as an RN in an emergency department. A 10-year-old child has been admitted to the department with a diagnosis of exacerbation of asthma secondary to bronchitis. The patient has been prescribed salbutamol.

What is the more effective method of delivery- a nebuliser or a spacer?

Format

Written paper with well-structured paragraphs. Headings can be used if they help structure your work.

Introduction (500 words)

Briefly describe the process you used to answer the question. i.e. how you formulated a searchable question and developed a search strategy. Justify the approach you took in accessing the evidence. Describe the rationale behind the selection of each paper (hint: level of the evidence, quality of the evidence, relevance). Both quantitative and/or qualitative articles can be used, as appropriate to the clinical scenario and question you have developed. It is not necessary to present all the evidence you found (and you have limited word count to do this). The key thing is quality not quantity – so four or five research-based articles are better than a large number of low-level papers. Provide the print screens of the abs

tracts of the papers you have chosen.

Main body of the paper (800 words)

Briefly present each paper and their main findings. What does the research show?

Conclusion (200 words)

This is where you clearly state what you think the answer to your question is and why.
