An estimated 11.5 million illegal immigrants are now in the United States, according to the Pew Hispanic Center—the lowest number in a decade, and still declining. From 2000 to 2005, an average of 800,000 illegal immigrants entered the United States each year. But since then, an average of 500,000 has arrived annually.
Visit the CBP Border Security Spotlight and then briefly analyze the current security initiatives that are being used to protect our borders. What are some of the reasons why illegal immigration is currently declining in the U.S.? What approaches are some state and local units of government taking to attempt to further reduce the number of aliens who are living and working in their jurisdictions?

(Da) The Customs and Border Protection Agency has reorganized and developed a much more community-oriented approach to better apply its resources to the problem. It appears that the cooperation with other agencies including those that border the United States is having an impact on the ability of the United States Customs and Border Protection team in detecting and deterring illegal immigration. The use of technological advances has changed the abilities of the border patrol agents in detecting and deterring this activity as well. The terms “Information, Integration, and Rapid Response” is used throughout the strategic plan document to describe the activities of the Border Patrol Agents. The use of biometrics, infrared and night vision, as well as drones and remote cameras have improved the ability of the Border Patrol to enforce where needed rather than conducting random patrols. The use of biometrics helps determine the identity of offenders. All of these require less man-hours while increasing the ability to detect and deter illegal immigration (U.S. Customs and Border Protection, 2012).
The national government increased the activity of ICE and the Department of Homeland Security by checking businesses for illegal immigrants in the workplace (Peak, 2012). This prevents the business owner from being tempted to employ an illegal workforce and in turn takes away opportunities for the immigrant. Local agencies are required to report suspected illegal immigrants to ICE, in Colorado, in an effort to reduce the problem. Another way that local law enforcement agencies work to prevent illegal immigration is to participate in joint task forces with Border Patrol (U.S. Customs and Border Protection, 2012).
