San Diego PD went through an audit conducted by the Department of Justice and the Police Executive Research Foundation.  The focus of the audit was to identify areas where the Department can improve the manner by which we hire and complete background investigations, investigate police officer misconduct, and discipline the officers when misconduct is identified.  It was a long process and many within the Department were concerned that the process will become a “blame game” but I feel the process helped us identify areas for improvement in hiring the best candidates.  This audit stemmed from several cases of officer misconduct that surfaced related to sexual abuse and improprieties accomplished while the officers were on-duty.  The results were released to the public this week and there has been much discussion related to whether all recommendations are feasible.
