UCI Human-Computer Interaction Paper

Human-Computer Interaction, or HCI is a multidisciplinary field of study that focuses on the design of computer technology (including digital media), as well as the interaction between humans and computers.

In the reading for today, the authors describe many aspects or affordances of technological interfaces that impact how users respond to these technologies, in terms of how credible they perceive the technology to be, how memorable they find the content, how burdensome the cognitive load of interacting with the technology is, and how much they learn from the content.

Please describe some of the features/affordances that the reading discusses, and how these affordances impact user responses to the technology. Then think about learning in a classroom. Do you see any parallels between features of technology that users find engaging and helpful, and how learning in best supported in classrooms? You can draw from your own experiences for this.

You can write your response in a short essay format, in the form of bullet points, an outline, a comparative chart/table, or some other format that is helpful for you in making your points.

Note: This reading is very dense and covers many topics. Pick 2 or 3 topics to focus on for this assignment. You do not have to cover all the material in the chapter.

Interactivity has been shown to increase user engagement with and retention of content

· Rich modalities that allow for customization and self-expression contribute to feelings of autonomy

· User-to-user interaction has been shown to increase motivation

· Children learn better when they can engage in self-directed learning and connect activities to their own experiences

· Social constructivist theory suggests that children learn better when engaging with others (active learning)

Interactivity can also increase cognitive burden

· Smartphones detract from attention and lead to worse academic outcomes

· Being off task in class decreases learning

Example 3: Short Essay

The readings suggest that interactivity can increase user engagement with and retention of technology-mediated content. For example, presenting digital material in multiple modalities…
