Shortage of Nurses

There is a serious shortage of licensed nurses in the United States. Such a shortage often requires that nurses work double shifts or absorb more patients than what is deemed an acceptable level. In the event that an oncoming nurse fails to show for his or her shift, do nurses have an obligation to remain on the job to ensure adequate coverage or should they be allowed to leave once their assigned shift is completed? Explain your answer.
