My classmates Response is below:

For nurses who have entered the workforce within the last 10 years, paper charting may be something only talked about by older nurses, or utilized begrudgingly during downtime. Since the passage of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act of 2009 (HITECH) that promoted the adoption and meaningful use of electronic health records (EHR), EHRs have become synonymous with medical care (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2015). While it may seem that EHRs are efficient and easy to use, the process of adopting these systems is not without challenges.

Resistance to Implementation

Staff resistance to the adoption of an EHR is one of the most challenging aspects of implementing the system in health care facilities. I have even heard grumblings from fellow nurses about finding another job when my facility spoke about initiating the change to EHRs. In fact, “leadership, planning, management, choices, and execution usually are more difficult than dealing with hardware and software choices” (Mooney & Boyle, 2011, p. S5)). It is so important to have buy-in from nursing staff, as they make up a significant portion of health care workforce. In order to combat this resistance, staff nurses should be involved in the transition process from the beginning. If nurses feel that they have stake in the process, they will feel more invested in the outcome and successful on-boarding of the new technology. I suggest having staff nurses participate in early planning meetings, and to train staff nurses to become ‘super users’ within the facility. It will be helpful during implementation for nurses to be assisted by peers versus outside professionals.

Flexibility and Expandability

When choosing an EHR to implement in your workplace, it is so important to plan for the future so that you can ensure that as your facility grows and changes, the EHR can flex with it. For example, in my winter job at a ski resort, electronic charting was implemented only last year. There was a lot of thought that went into the selection process, however, decision-makers did not plan for coordination with Ski Patrol’s electronic charting system. Unfortunately, DocuTap (used by our clinic) does not interoperate with any of the Ski Patrol software currently available. This poses a challenge, as much of the information needed at each place is similar and shared between disciplines. As it stands now, Ski Patrol continues to use paper charting, while the clinic uses DocuTap. We have to copy the information obtained by ski patrol and hand-deliver it to the clinic. To combat this issue, it is imperative that the development team evaluate all software options, as well as the tech support each one offers as this may be a higher start-up cost, but save money in the long-run (Mooney & Boyle, 2011).

Process Improvement

Once an EHR is implemented and the extra support staff is gone, the challenges do not end. Once nurses begin to use the technology more comfortably, they may identify a process that needs to be changed to make it more user-friendly or to better suit the needs of the staff. In order for staff to continue to use the technology appropriately, they need to feel that their input is valued and that there is the possibility for change and improvement within the software after it is implemented. My suggestion to help with this issue is to have a nurse liaison who has clinical experience within the organization and has an interest in nursing informatics. This individual’s role is to act as a leader by relaying staff concerns to the software company to see if there are changes that can be made to make the software more user-friendly or to more appropriately meet the needs of staff. “What health care needs most are effective leaders who understand innovation and how it spreads, who respect the diversity of change itself, and who can nurture innovation in all its rich and many costumes” (Hyrkas & Harvey, 2010, p. 1). The hospital I work for has a liaison employed by Cerner, the company who manages the software we use. This nurse was a staff nurse in the emergency department, then a clinical nurse educator. This system works very well for us.

In conclusion, there are several potential challenges to implementing EHRs, including: resistance to implementation, flexibility and expandability, and process improvement. Since the HITECH Act of 2009, EHRs have been initiated in every major medical facility in the country. Though not without obstacles, meaningful use of EHRs contribute to the safe, efficient, and accessibility of medical information.

Adaptive Response, health and medical assignment help

As an advanced practice nurse, you will examine patients presenting with a variety of disorders. You must, therefore, understand how the body normally functions so that you can identify when it is reacting to changes. Often, when changes occur in body systems, the body reacts with compensatory mechanisms. These compensatory mechanisms, such as adaptive responses, might be signs and symptoms of alterations or underlying disorders. In the clinical setting, you use these responses, along with other patient factors, to lead you to a diagnosis.

Consider the following scenarios:

Scenario 1:

Jennifer is a 2-year-old female who presents with her mother. Mom is concerned because Jennifer has been “running a temperature” for the last 3 days. Mom says that Jennifer is usually healthy and has no significant medical history. She was in her usual state of good health until 3 days ago when she started to get fussy, would not eat her breakfast, and would not sit still for her favorite television cartoon. Since then she has had a fever off and on, anywhere between 101oF and today’s high of 103.2oF. Mom has been giving her ibuprofen, but when the fever went up to 103.2oF today, she felt that she should come in for evaluation. A physical examination reveals a height and weight appropriate 2-year-old female who appears acutely unwell. Her skin is hot and dry. The tympanic membranes are slightly reddened on the periphery, but otherwise normal in appearance. The throat is erythematous with 4+ tonsils and diffuse exudates. Anterior cervical nodes are readily palpable and clearly tender to touch on the left side. The child indicates that her throat hurts “a lot” and it is painful to swallow. Vital signs reveal a temperature of 102.8oF, a pulse of 128 beats per minute, and a respiratory rate of 24 beats per minute.

Scenario 2:

Jack is a 27-year-old male who presents with redness and irritation of his hands. He reports that he has never had a problem like this before, but about 2 weeks ago he noticed that both his hands seemed to be really red and flaky. He denies any discomfort, stating that sometimes they feel “a little bit hot,” but otherwise they feel fine. He does not understand why they are so red. His wife told him that he might have an allergy and he should get some steroid cream. Jack has no known allergies and no significant medical history except for recurrent ear infections as a child. He denies any traumatic injury or known exposure to irritants. He is a maintenance engineer in a newspaper building and admits that he often works with abrasive solvents and chemicals. Normally he wears protective gloves, but lately they seem to be in short supply so sometimes he does not use them. He has exposed his hands to some of these cleaning fluids, but says that it never hurt and he always washed his hands when he was finished.

Scenario 3:

Martha is a 65-year-old woman who recently retired from her job as an administrative assistant at a local hospital. Her medical history is significant for hypertension, which has been controlled for years with hydrochlorothiazide. She reports that lately she is having a lot of trouble sleeping, she occasionally feels like she has a “racing heartbeat,” and she is losing her appetite. She emphasizes that she is not hungry like she used to be. The only significant change that has occurred lately in her life is that her 87-year-old mother moved into her home a few years ago. Mom had always been healthy, but she fell down a flight of stairs and broke her hip. Her recovery was a difficult one, as she has lost a lot of mobility and independence and needs to rely on her daughter for assistance with activities of daily living. Martha says it is not the retirement she dreamed about, but she is an only child and is happy to care for her mother. Mom wakes up early in the morning, likes to bathe every day, and has always eaten 5 small meals daily. Martha has to put a lot of time into caring for her mother, so it is almost a “blessing” that Martha is sleeping and eating less. She is worried about her own health though and wants to know why, at her age, she suddenly needs less sleep.

To Prepare

  • Review the three scenarios, as well as Chapter 6 in the Huether and McCance text.
  • Identify the pathophysiology of the disorders presented in each of the three scenarios, including their associated alterations. Consider the adaptive responses to the alterations.
  • Review the examples of “Mind Maps—Dementia, Endocarditis, and Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)” media in this week’s Learning Resources. Then select one of the disorders you identified from the scenarios. Use the examples in the media as a guide to construct a mind map for the disorder you selected. Consider the epidemiology, pathophysiology, risk factors, clinical presentation, and diagnosis of the disorder, as well as any adaptive responses to alterations.
  • Review the Application Assignment Rubric found under Course Information

controversy regarding the accusation of Mike Tyson, science homework help

There is a considerable amount of controversy regarding the accusation of Mike Tyson  raping Desiree Washington.  Although, Tyson was found guilty of raping Washington, media has portrayed Washington as fabricating the story to gain money from Tyson.  Some of Washington’s beauty pageant contestants said Washington was a “gold digger” and looking for Tyson’s money (Berkow, 1992).  However, within certain communities and with media blaming the victim, in this case, I have to agree more with the prosecuting attorney’s argument suggesting that Desiree Washington was blameless in the Mike Tyson trial.  According to Alexander (1980), “victim characteristics of no consequence for assigning responsibility to rape victims, such as dress and resistance, do enter into decisions regarding the assailant” (p.30).  I believe Washington was simply just stopping at Tyson’s hotel room so he could grab something when the brutal rape took place.  Berkow (1992) explained that Washington was very creditable and innocent.  In an interview with Barbra Walter’s (20/20), Washington stated “I wasn’t thinking that this man, my father’s hero, a celebrity, would do something like this to me” (Berkow, 1992).

Ashford General Hospital Proposal

Ashford General Hospital is a 263-bed regional hospital located in California, serving its community for more than 50 years. The hospital maintains the only 24-hour emergency department in the area and an “extended hours” urgent care clinic. Similar to other hospitals in the United States, Ashford General Hospital is encountering a nursing shortage. Sixty-eight percent of the nursing staff is over the age of 45, facing retirement. The retention rate on nurses is 61%, compared to 65% nationwide.  Many of the nursing staff find the work too physically demanding and have a feeling of emotional burn-out as well.  In the past two years, the hospital has used both per diem nurses and traveling nurses who sign short-term contracts to fill individual shifts and accommodate short-term staffing needs arising from staff vacations or medical leaves.  This has not only driven up personnel costs but also resulted in lower scores on patient satisfaction surveys. Ashford General Hospital faces significant challenges in nurse staffing ahead as it grapples with these issues, and the hospital board is very concerned. They know there must be some changes made in order to prevent a major financial and human resources crisis in the future. As the newly hired CEO, you are asked to present a proposal in the next board meeting.

For your Final Paper, you will create a 10 to 15 page proposal (excluding title and reference pages) for the Ashford General Hospital Board of Directors. In your proposal, you will:

  • Include an executive summary.
  • Research and describe solutions implemented at five other hospitals in the US that were dealing with these same issues.
  • Based on your research, describe two solutions that are the most viable for Ashford General Hospital to implement within the next two years.
  • Create a total of two stakeholder group analyses for two solutions you select. Each analysis should include at least five stakeholder groups involved (e.g. patients, hospital executive administration, accounting, Human Resources (HR), marketing, third-party payers, etc.). As part of your analysis, address the following questions:
    • Who is impacted?
    • What change processes may be required?
    • What fiscal impact would occur?
    • What are the ethical, legal, and diversity risk factors involved?
  • Based upon the stakeholder group analyses, recommend the best solution for Ashford General Hospital with detailed justification. Explain why you feel it is the most viable and appropriate solution given the financial impact, HR issues, and interpersonal dynamics of hospital personnel, cultural shift, and change management.
  • To prepare your board proposal, including the textbook, utilize at least 10-to-12 scholarly and/or peer-reviewed sources that were published within the past five years, as well as hospital or foundation websites. All sources must be cited according to APA style.

Writing the Final Paper

The Final Paper:

  • Must be 10-to-15 double-spaced pages (excluding title page and references page) in length, and formatted according to APA style.
  • Must include a title page with the following:
    • Title of paper
    • Student’s name
    • Course name and number
    • Instructor’s name
    • Date submitted
  • Must include an executive summary.
  • Must begin with an introductory paragraph that has a succinct thesis statement.
  • Must address the topic of the paper with critical thought.
  • Must end with a conclusion that reaffirms your thesis.
  • Including the textbook, must utilize a minimum of 10 to 12 scholarly and/or peer-reviewed sources that were published within the past five years, as well as hospital or foundation websites.  Must document all sources in APA style.
  • Must document all sources in APA style.
  • Must include a separate reference page, formatted according to APA style

Science help needed for 2 response about desertification

choose ttwo essays and make  responses of each one  of the following about desertification–3-4 well developed sentences

1.Desertification is the persistent degradation of dryland ecosystems by climate changes and human activities. In 2000, drylands were home to one-third of the human population. Desertification can occur naturally due to droughts; however, humans play a huge role in the process as well. For example, diverting rivers from their natural path so that we can use the water for agriculture. The area would no longer have a water supply, and vegetation could potentially die off.

Unsustainable use of resources and the lack of adequate infrastructures can lead to land degradation. Furthermore, the removal of most vegetation is a major factor that causes degradation. We can help control this by integrating land and water management to protect soils from erosion, and other forms of degradation. We can also give local communities the capacity to prevent this process and to manage dryland resources more effectively.

In the 1930’s, poor land use led to awful dust storm in the Great Plains. A combination of farmers over using the land’s resources and horrible droughts, led to one of the worst environmental disasters of the twentieth century. Fortunately, I do not live in an area that is affected by desertification. I live in a rural area on about twenty acres and have a small garden. I sometimes use pesticides to keep the bugs away. It is very hot and muggy here and bugs are an issue. The use of pesticides could be causing desertification by putting chemicals in the ground.

Merriam-Webster’s dictionary describes desertification as the process by which an area becomes a desert.  It is the process where arable or fertile land become wastelands, drier and unproductive as they once were.

One of the ways that most everyone is indirectly responsible for desertification is through our use of wood.  Wood comes from places that are taking part in deforestation.  This has led to the extinction of some animals and the desertification of some lands.  Humans rely on wood for many reasons, from building homes, to fires, to using charcoal for cooking.  All of these things are taking part in the desertification of some lands.

The Colorado Plateau is an area that is currently fighting desertification.  This is not so much desertification due to human impacts, more than the growth of plants and trees that are taking out other grasses and vegetation that certain wildlife needs for survival.  In order to combat this, vegetation is planted in certain places, and when there is intruder plants that invade, some controlled fires are used to take the area to a beginning phase in what it should be.

Some of the major causes are deforestation that large logging companies partake in.  The only way to combat this is to ensure that wood is gathered from sources not using mass deforesting techniques, or planting trees in the same area that are forested.  Another major cause is over farming land, one way to combat this is by crop rotation where farmers rotate their crops to keep the land able to be farmed into the future and ensure that the minerals needed for farming are not just used up by farming.  Another cause would be overgrazing.  This is combated by the use of fences to ensure that different areas are grazed at different times of the year allowing for those areas that were grazed to grow again.

In the 1930s, the major cause of the dust bowl were a huge drought, as well as over farming.  Farmers had yet to learn the art of crop rotations.  They had used up the nutrients of the soil so that nothing would grow.  Mix with this the drought that was seen and when the wind picked up, it blew dust around since there was no ground cover due to the over farming.  This ended when the rains came back ending the drought.

Desertification Effects, Causes, And Examples : Top 10 List. (2015). Retrieved from http://scienceheathen.com/2015/01/05/desertification-effects-causes-examples-top-10-list/

Desertification is a process in which an area becomes drier and drier until eventually it is transformed into a desert or a barren wasteland in comparison to what it once was. Desertification is caused by a variety of processes, one of those being the loss of vegetation needed to keep topsoil in place. A few other causes of desertification are overgrazing by livestock or improper rotation of crops. Farmers also have to be careful not only when planning what crops to plant, but also in how to water them. An overabundance of salt can occur severely reducing the soil’s ability to remain stable enough to promote plant growth. As you can see, human beings are a main contributor of desertification.  Humans are also known for using an area for all of its resources and once those resources are exhausted we move again and again, continuing a trail of desertification.

I am not currently located in an area of desertification. There are numerous small ponds, field, and livestock around the area I am in, but the grounds are fertile and promote crop growth. I have indirectly contributed to desertification by renting houses that were built after clear cutting an area of its trees. I may have directly contributed to desertification by driving my vehicle and increasing greenhouse gases in our atmosphere, which may contribute to global warming. Thus over time the increased temperatures could promote the process of desertification happening even quicker.

The Great Plains “dust bowl” covered an area of 150,000 miles in the lands of Texas and Oklahoma. The combination of light soil, high winds, little rain, overgrazing of cattle, and human interaction all contributed to the dust bowl happening. Farmers took special note of the rising wheat prices and in their attempts to cash in on the big harvests began to plow over grasslands as well as knock down soil holding trees. Due to the unlivable conditions of the dust bowl, 2.5 million people fled the area. NASA has also concluded that cooler Pacific Ocean temperatures and warmer Atlantic Ocean temperatures created near perfect conditions for drought.

Strategic Preparedness Cycle, science homework help

Please note that each and every assignment has its own word limit.

This discussion should be between 150 and 200 words. (The List of References should not be included in the word count.)

Discussion 1: Strategic Preparedness Cycle

Emergencies and disasters are unpredictable, but certain types of hazards are regional. For example, we know that every year in the Atlantic, there will be somewhere in the area of 40 named storms, about half of these will gain hurricane strength, and about half of those will actually make landfall. For this reason, emergency planning in states along the Gulf Coast, Florida, and the Carolinas is focused on the very real possibility that a hurricane of catastrophic strength may occur in any given year. Applying the strategic preparedness cycle will help communities better prepare for unforeseeable events. The strategic preparedness cycle is a systems approach for establishing and improving preparedness. It is a continuous cycle with five major steps: (1) planning, (2) organization and equipment, (3) training, (4) exercise, and (5) evaluation and improvement.

For this Discussion, consider the steps of a strategic preparedness cycle and why each is important. Then, consider which step is most critical for communities.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 3 a brief explanation of the significance of each step of the strategic preparedness cycle. Then explain which step of the strategic preparedness cycle might be the most critical to communities and why. Justify your response with references to the Learning Resources and current literature.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.

It is important that you cover all the topics identified in the assignment. Covering the topic does not mean mentioning the topic BUT presenting an explanation from the context of ethics and the readings for this class

To get maximum points you need to follow the requirements listed for this assignments 1) look at the page limits 2) review and follow APA rules 3) create subheadings to identify the key sections you are presenting and 4) Free from typographical and sentence construction errors.

The governing board of Middleville hired a consulting company to evaluate its strategic performance, specifically in the areas of Human Resources, Information Technology, Financing, and Marketing. As part of the consultant’s evaluation, several leaders of Middleville’s units were asked their perspective of the organization’s performance.

You are working for the consultant. Your job is to identify the issues from the response that should be considered further by the consultant team and possibly discussed with the governing board and the CEO. The firm has a rule, “Never offer a criticism or negative finding without suggesting how the client organization can correct it,” so you must indicate what sort of correction you would recommend as part of your list. Because you know there were about two (2) dozen other interviews, you decide you should rank your issues in importance, to make sure the most critical are discussed.

Write a six to eight (6-8) page paper in which you:

  1. Explain the governing board’s role in these strategic initiatives, determining its responsibility and involvement.
  2. Evidence-based management means that operational and strategic decisions are made based upon the evidence that goals and objectives are actually being met. Quantitative measurements must be identified and measured. This data is then used to evaluate the HCO’s performance. Name three (3) performances Middleville can use to measure its success in providing quality healthcare to the community, and identify quantifiable, measureable indicators that can be used to do so. Explain the importance of each performance measurement.
  3. Given the statistics of Middleville and its two (2) competitors provided in Table 1, recommend to the HCO what areas it should focus on to maintain its competitive market share as well as continue to provide healthcare to the community in the 21st century.
  4. Some of Middleville’s Board members are very interested in pursuing advanced technology systems over the next five (5) years, while others are concerned about the enormous expense and need assurance that the investment in technology will be worthwhile. In both monetary and process terms, describe the costs and benefits associated with implementing EMR and associated health data systems. Lay out a plan for how various systems can be implemented.
  5. Middleville has faced many challenges in recruiting and retaining nurses and other clinical employees. The economy has hit the area very hard and budgetary limitations have reduced the amount of money available for salary increases. The Board knows it needs to provide other benefits to their valued employees. Provide at least two (2) suggestions to Human Resources to promote employee satisfaction and, therefore, retain experienced personnel.
  6. Use at least three (3) quality resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar Websites do not qualify as quality resources.
  7. Format your assignment according to the following formatting requirements:

<!–[if !supportLists]–>a. <!–[endif]–>Typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides.

<!–[if !supportLists]–>b. <!–[endif]–>Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page is not included in the required page length.

<!–[if !supportLists]–>c. <!–[endif]–>Include a reference page. Citations and references must follow APA format. The reference page is not included in the required page length.

Work & Power Week5_PHY_Lab, physics homework help

Work & Power

In Lab 5, please review Chapter 6. Chapter 6 involves walking up a flight of stairs and recording your time via a stopwatch or chronograph. You will be asked to make measurements and calculations for the total time to work the flight of stairs (at least 7 steps) and the vertical height of the stairs from the bottom to the top.

Please Note: There are TWO parts to this lab. The first for running up several steps, and the second to pretend you kept running for one hour. Additionally, your answers should be based on the cost of the runs in terms of ENERGY (KWH) and NOT POWER (kW).

  • Fill in the blanks in the Lab Answer Sheet at the end of this lab. THIS LAB IS DUE AT THE END OF THE WEEK.
  • Submit this Lab Answer Sheet when all of the labs are completed.
  • These can be scanned and sent as pdf or picture files (e.g. tif, gif, etc.) or by any other method of your choice as long as the Answer Sheets are legible and translatable by Grantham University faculty.

The lab details follow:

Purpose:  Determine your work and power as you climb a flight of stairs.

Materials:  Yardstick, a stopwatch or digital/analog watch, bathroom scale, calculator, and you, the climber

  • Estimate your mass in kg (Hint: 1 kg (mass) = 2.2 pounds (weight)).
  • You should approach the bottom step of the stairs with a steady speed.
  • You are to start the time as you reach the first stair and stop the clock when you reach the top

Observations and Data:

  • Calculate the work and power for you to climb the flight of stairs
  • Work (you) = _____; power (you) = ________
  • Calculate your power in kilowatts: (P(kW) = _____.

  • Your local electric company supplies you with 1 kW of power for 1 hour for 8 cents.  Assume that you could climb these stairs continuously for 1 hour.  How much money would this climb be worth?  $_________.
  • Transfer all answers to the Lab 4 Answer sheet.

Your assignment should be 250-500 words in length and APA format.

Researching Cancer

Fundamentally, cancer is a failure of the immune system. Cancer kills because it spreads and disturbs homeostasis. For this assignment, research and then describe a specific type of cancer of your choosing. You should complete the following for this assignment:

  • Identify the type of cancer you are going to research. Generally, explain what it is and what part of the body it affects.
  • Describe the cancer in biological terms at the level of the cell and at the level of the major organ system it affects.
  • Explain the characteristics of cancer cells that distinguish them from normal cells.
  • Consider how the disease affects the body as it progresses or spreads. What are some specific aspects of homeostasis that the spreading disease could affect? What self-regulating systems are upset because of this disease?
  • Discuss the therapies available for treatment of this specific type of cancer.
  • Discuss the lifestyle choices that might aid in prevention or treatment of this type of cancer.

600 words and must have references properly cited. Note: Your sources should be reliable. Points will be deducted for citing unreliable sources such as Wikipedia, unless otherwise specified by your instructor. These types of sites have user-generated content and can be useful as starting points for your research. The reason they are considered unreliable is that they are not peer-reviewed and, in the case of Wikipedia, anyone can add an entry or change an entry. Hence, these types of sources should not be cited in college-level research papers. However, you may find Wikipedia useful in finding other resources and links that are reputable and reliable. You will find these listed at the end of the entries.

Unit 3: Dynamic Interactions – Discussion

Whenever new discoveries force scientists to reconsider their hypotheses, theories and data, they do just that. This is why people think of science as a collection of concepts that are always being revised.

This holds true for the basic building block concepts within science as well. The cell is a perfect example of this: in the mid-1600s, Robert Hooke used one of the very first microscopes to examine thin slices of cork. When he saw that the cork plant was made up of tiny box-shaped pieces, he gave science the concept of the cell. For 100 years, people thought of the cell as the smallest thing inside all living creatures. But then, in 1781, Felice Fontana spotted something even smaller inside the cells from an eel: the nucleolus. This discovery made people rethink the idea that cells were the tiniest things inside living creatures. Clearly, there were even smaller things inside cells.

Since Fontana’s time, scientists have refined, revised, and rewritten their view of the cell thousands of times in order to match up with every piece of new data. This same process has happened with the scientific view of geological processes including plate tectonics and the seismic wave energy generated during earthquakes.

Review your Reading this week focusing on plate tectonics.

Learn more about Alfred Wegener here:

Shifting Continents: A Case Study in Scientific Revision

Using what you learned about plate tectonics, Alfred Wegener, and the basics of scientific investigation from the previous units discuss the following:

  1. Did Wegener reveal his theory of continental drift too soon? For the sake of scientific investigation, how is revealing an explanation for a process early both risky and sometimes necessary?
  2. Apart from lacking an explanation for how the continents could move across the surface of the Earth, Wegener’s research was met by skepticism for other reasons. How can a scientist overcome skepticism? What features of the scientific method can help prevent a scientist from being labeled a “crackpot?”
  3. If Alfred Wegener were alive today, and had access to the technology and data that exists today, share a form of evidence that he could have added to his hypothesis or would have changed his hypothesis. Try to share a different form of evidence from those shared by your classmates and/or add to their posts by describing how the evidence is collected, how the technology works to collect the data, or how this technology/evidence has been used in other applications.

writing assignment

Writing Assignment, due 4/30 11:59pm

Each of you will write a short paper worth 100 points that accounts for 5% of the grades of this course. The due date is next Sunday (4/30/2017) 11:59pm.

The paper is to be based on an article from a magazine, newspaper, or other popular press source that has something in it about biology. In your paper you should explain the science so that it is clear that you understand the biological principle(s) involved, and you should explain why you chose the article. Why is it interesting, and what does it have to do with your professional or personal interests?

Where To Find a Suitable Article To Write About. Part of the reason for the assignment is to help you to be aware of how many ways biology is involved in ‘‘everyday’’ things. Using an index or abstract is not the way to find an article; rather, just pick up a paper or magazine you would normally read and look in there. I guarantee you’ll find something. (I am suspicious of articles from hard core scientific journals like Nature or Science since I doubt that most of you routinely read those publications.) Newspaper articles, magazine articles, something you’ve read for another class, anything will be suitable as long as it includes something biological.

Explaining the Science. The goal here is to convince anyone who reads the paper, that you have identified and understood the basic biological principles and problems dealt with in the article. You may use your textbook as well as other books or reference materials from the library as a resource to help you understand the science. For instance, if the article is about liver transplant surgery, you will want to know and explain something about why a liver is a necessary organ, why a liver might need replacing, what is transplant rejection, and how it can be prevented. List the reference materials you have consulted in a bibliography at the end of the paper. I expect a minimum of three citations in addition to the original article itself. Generally, dictionaries and encyclopedias are not considered appropriate reference material for this purpose.

Explaining Why You Chose This Article. Your goal here is to connect this article and the scientific content to something else in your personal or professional life. Why did the article catch your attention? How does it relate to other things that are important to you? How will

The Mechanics. The papers should be typed with the following specifications: double-spaced, one-inch margins, font size 12, four pages maximum and two pages minimum, with a bibliography of at least three citations which is not included in the page limits. (The citation for the source article is included in these three citations.) List any reference materials you consulted in the bibliography. You may use any appropriate style for the bibliography as long as it is complete and internally consistent.

Of the 100 total points for the paper, you will receive 100% of them if you simply complete the assignment (i.e. choose an appropriate topic, explain it adequately, and include a bibliography, all within the page limits specified). An extra 10 points are a reward for doing an extra good job (at my discretion). I will be looking for thorough, thoughtful and well-supported discussions, regardless of the topic.

Grammar and spelling do count but are not the prime consideration. I expect complete sentences and correct spelling (i.e. I have to be able to read and understand what you write). If it’s absolutely awful, I may deduct up to 10 points for the grammar and spelling.

The due date is non-negotiable. You will lose 5 points for every day or part of a day that it is late

Health Insurance Benefits, writing homework help

Managers need to understand the impact on the financial viability of a health service organization for providing care to the uninsured or underinsured. Review the following case scenario and provide a substantive 150 to 200 word response that thoroughly answers each of the following questions:

Joe Smith is a 27- year-old Caucasian male who works two part-time jobs for two different construction companies. Joe has been having dizzy spells off and on for the past two months. While driving to work one day, he loses consciousness and is involved in a motor vehicle accident. Joe is admitted to your not-for-profit hospital with a broken leg and multiple lacerations.

  • Does Mr. Smith fit the typical profile for an uninsured person in the United States? Justify your answer.
  • How will your hospital most likely be reimbursed for Mr. Smith’s medical care?
  • During the recent economic downturn, your community has experienced unemployment rates of approximately 9%. What can be done to mitigate the effects of the financial impact to your organization?

Utilize at least one scholarly source, cited in correct APA format that supports factual statements and conclusions about the topic. Review several of your classmates’ posts. Provide a substantive response to at least two of your peers by Day 7.

Suggest additional socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle, and other cultural factors related to the patient, homework help

I need to respond to my classmates post

  • Suggest additional socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle, and other cultural factors related to the patient.
  • Critique your colleague’s targeted questions, and explain how the patient might interpret these questions. Explain whether any of the questions would apply to your patient, and why.
  • apa format, 2 paragraphs, 3 references

My classmates post is below:

23-year-old Native American

Native Americans have a unique culture with particular socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle choices that pertain to this group of people. It is critical to provide culturally appropriate and competent care based on that patient and history. In understanding different cultures and individuals it important not to assume but learn for that patient specifically regarding beliefs; however, it can be helpful to have a frame of reference for different groups of people. Researching and asking questions it essential. Interesting facts presented by the U.S. Census Bureau include but are not limited to the following: Native Americans have a 71% completion rate of high school education, and 11% have a bachelor’s education. Native Americans and Alaska Native are less likely to be employed in management or professional related jobs. The majority of their jobs lie in services like construction, maintenance, transportation like moving material, and in farming, fishing, and forestry. The rate of poverty is higher amongst this group than the total U.S. population. Around one-third of Native American live on a reservation, and the median age of people living in these areas are younger than those living off the reservation (Ogunwole, 2006).

Sensitive Issue

When discussing culture, there are some topics that are considered sensitive to the population. Most pertinently spiritual and lifestyle choices related to culture are typically sensitive. There are sacred instructions that many Native American’s form their beliefs on. What is considered to be of utmost importance is respect – respect for the Earth, respect for the Great Spirit, and respect for humankind. They believe that to look after one’s well-being is both mind and body, and they should take full responsibility for their actions. As you treat Native American patients ensure you are giving them your highest respect and honor; thus, building bridges towards addressing sensitive topics and allowing them to take control over the situation (The Creator to Native People, n.d.).

Targeted Questions

Based on the information above and in the case-study, I would focus on these areas to build the patient’s health history and assess risks.

1. What do you think your problem is? This is a board question that avoids stereotyping or assuming the patient’s problem is pot and alcohol consumption.

2. How bad is your sickness/ anxiety? This question could lead to a discussion regarding the frequency of drinking and the smoking of pot. As seen in the physical exam, it is notable that patient had poor dentition – many carries and hepatomegaly indicating frequent consumption of both alcohol and pot.

3. What worries you most about your sickness? This question shows the severity and focuses your education on what the patient desires most.

4. What do you think we should do to help you with your sickness? This question helps clarify what goals or outcomes the patient would like from seeking medical assistance.

5. Have you sought out any help from anyone else? Due to the patient being Native American is it likely that the patient may have sought help from a Native American medicine man (Ball, Dains, Flynn, Solomon & Stewart, 2015)

hca322w4 response help, health and medicine homework help

Review your classmates’ resource allocation plan and justification. Analyze the ethical concerns you have that may negatively impact the hospital. Describe the potential backlash that may result from their plan. Respond to at least two classmates. Your response must be at least 100 words.

1) Krista   Resource allocation is difficult to determine when dealing with limited funds. “The ethical implications of rationing will continue to be highly contentious,” (Waldron, p.290, 2006). Allocating funds has become a political and social debate among communities. Waldron (2006) states, “policy makers have been forced to restrict treatment even when the need is great,” (p.291, 2006). With advancing technology, the elderly and people living with chronic illnesses are experiencing higher quality of lives and living longer than before (Waldron, 2006).

When it comes to allocating resources, patients are supposed to come first when considering quality of care. The World Health Organization states that efficacy, equality, and service to provide for the greater good are the aspects to consider when allocating resources (Guindo et. al, 2012). With that said, in order to give such quality of care, equipment and technology must be operable and in good condition. There are many ethical considerations that arise when considering where the funding goes in the hospital setting. Having two x-ray machines in a hospital is important in providing quality, efficient care to the patients. However, it is not a reasonable expense to purchase a brand new machine at this time. The x-ray machine will have to be leased, cutting the price in half. Having updated equipment allows for tax benefits at the end of the year. The x-ray machine will be leased for $50 million, instead of purchasing a brand new machine for $100 million. Healthcare education is one of the most important aspects in operating a hospital. Training and certification will have to be paid for by my facility, costing $55 million. The damaged ambulance drive-in is a potential hazard to patients and the drivers. This cost will have to consumed by my facility, resulting in a $25 million expenditure. The emergency room department is an important part of hospital operations, and will need to have all costs covered. Spending $100 million on the emergency department will remain in effect. For the greater good of the patients being treated I must take into consideration the finances and time management that will be spent on caring for one cancer patient versus caring for a group of patients. I will advise the care team to come up with the most productive outcome for the cancer patient on when, where, and how to be medically treated. This cancer patient would likely be eligible for government funding and hospice care. Therefore, with the amount of team needed to be spent on the patient, it would be in the patient’s best interest to seek hospice care, as well as a cancer treatment facility with more advanced technology. As the patient seeks proper medical care in another facility, I am saving $100 million. For the greater good of the community I will be keeping the 10 patients receiving assistance in my inpatient rehabilitation center. This will prevent them from being released before they have had the proper treatment dealing with their conditions. Having a fully operating MRI in good condition is important financially, as well as for my patients. I need to have equipment that will survive many years in my facility. I will spend the $170 million to update my equipment, and buy a new MRI machine. Lastly, the two elderly patients will not undergo hip replacement surgery in my facility. While the elderly population is undoubtedly important to my facility, I must make unfortunate decisions in order to maintain my operations. The two elderly patients will be advised to undergo physical therapy before any surgical recommendations will be made, saving my facility $50 million. My total budget comes out to $500 million.

2) Tammy  The health care is booming, and is faced with budget and dilemmas everyday. In this particular dilemma having $500 million to work with, and $700 million in expenses, is a dilemma at stake; I need a plan to do and explain my reason as well as the ethical consideration behind my decision

(1) One 35 year old cancer patient who needs significant time with the doctor, medical supplies, tests, and around the clock care:  Cost 100
(2) Emergency Room operations for daily care and treatment of about 100 people (-365,000/year) : Cost 100
(3). 10 patients (ranging in age from 18 to 45) receiving assistance in your inpatient/drug/alcohol rehab unit: Cost 100
(4). An MRI unit that is on the fritz and could die any day:  Replacement Coat 170
(5). One of your two X-ray machine is inoperable and must be replaced: Cost 100
(6). Ambulance drive-in area was damaged and needs to be repaired: Cost 25
(7). 2 Senior Patients who need hip replacement surgery: Cost 50
(8). Training needs for nursing staff for certification requirements: Cost 55

These all Totaling: $700 million

I would cut the MRI unit replacement cost because if needed there are different locations that offer MRI service. Since I have two X-ray machines and one is working I can cut the cost of the one not working. The other would be the drive in area that was damaged and needs repaired I could cut that cost because there are other drive up area that could be used. So with these not being applied could save 295 which means a balanced budget for other expenses.
One of the important aspects is our patients so keeping the 35 year old cancer patient would keep a lawsuit off my hands endangering welfare of the patient. On that same note it would be unethical to endanger your community with issues such as driving under the influence, illegal drug sales, and alcohol abuse problems in your community. Your nursing staff members do not obtain the training on their own for various reasons they wont be updated on knowledge and resources to do their job providing necessary training and continuing education for your key personnel is critical to maintaining state and federal standards as high quality care. The Emergency Room is above  and beyond which balances the expense of ethical integrity.

Prior to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the United States had a long record of safeguarding against home front attacks. When the 9/11 terrorist attacks occurred, many people, including key government officials, were shocked that a terrorist attack, especially one of such magnitude, could occur on American soil. Since then, homeland security has become a top priority. Structures, policies, and strategies in existence prior to 9/11 have been critically examined to determine inadequacies, and new structures, policies, and strategies have been developed. This course is designed to give you an understanding of terrorism, terrorist groups, and pre- and post-9/11 U.S. counterterrorism structures, policies, and strategies. Understanding these areas is fundamental to combating terrorism and predicting and preventing future terrorist attacks.

Terrorism by definition is the use of force or violence against persons or property in violation of criminal laws for purpose of intimidation, coercion, or ransom. Terrorist acts range from threats and assassinations to hijackings and bombings (FEMA, 2009). These acts are of extremism born from no single race, religion, national, or political affiliation. Terrorism is not a new phenomenon. It has existed in every era of history and continues to evolve. Likewise, terrorist groups such as Al Qaeda have evolved, adapted, and sometimes flourished despite heightened international efforts to combat terrorism and dismantle terrorist groups. The likelihood of terrorism ceasing to exist in the future is slim to none; however, there are strategies that can slow the promulgation of terrorist groups, stifle terrorist activities, and predict and prevent future terrorist attacks.

You begin your study of terrorism by examining its potential causes as well as the motivations of terrorists. In doing so, you might be surprised to learn that there is no one single cause of terrorism. Rather, there is a multitude of causes or contributing factors that may lead to terrorism. These causes or contributing factors include poverty, perceived social and political injustice, religious extremism, fanaticism, ethnic conflict, and inequality. Just as there is no one single cause of terrorism, there is no agreed-upon profile that applies to all terrorists. While many people may assume that terrorists generally are uneducated, mentally unstable, or have a history of criminal activity, this simply is not the case. Terrorists come from a wide array of backgrounds and in some ways share similarities with the general population, making it difficult to detect them. There also are many different political, religious, social, and psychological motivations for terrorists to commit acts of terror.

In addition to studying terrorists and their motivations, you also examine terrorist groups, their evolution, and their distinct characteristics. Initially you are exposed to literature on a wide range of terrorist groups, including homegrown and international terrorist groups. However, as you progress through the course, you focus exclusively on Al Qaeda and its associated movements (AQAM). You focus on AQAM because it poses a significant threat to U.S. homeland security. As you study AQAM, you consider its political objectives, ideology, worldview, and terrorist activities. You also consider the current debate about its evolution and structure as a leaderless movement or a hierarchical organization.

The remaining weeks of the course focus on U.S. counterterrorism structures, policies, and strategies. You begin by examining the pre-9/11 approach to terrorism. Prior to 9/11, terrorism was viewed as a law enforcement issue rather than a homeland security issue. Therefore, the focus was on gathering evidence to capture and convict suspected terrorists of crimes they had already committed rather than trying to predict and prevent terrorist attacks. In addition, government agencies vital to the prevention of terrorism (e.g. FBI, CIA, FAA, etc.) lacked communication and collaboration. To round out your study of the pre-9/11 approach to terrorism, you also explore the 9/11 Commission Report. The 9/11 Commission was created in late 2002 to examine the circumstances surrounding the 9/11 terrorist attacks. In 2004, the Commission published a report that included missteps that occurred prior to the attacks as well as recommendations for future counterterrorism efforts. You explore those recommendations, their significance, and their implementation.

After the 9/11 Commission published their report, there were major changes made to national security laws and policies. Several legislative acts were passed to strengthen national security, ensure public safety, and prevent future terrorist attacks. You explore many of these legislative acts, including the Transportation Security Act, Homeland Security Act, Comprehensive Security Act, and Patriot Act, as well as their strengths and limitations. This provides you with foundational knowledge for a later week in this course, in which you examine the delicate balance between civil liberties and national security. It also provides you with foundational knowledge to complete the Final Project. For your Final Project, you are asked to develop a proposal on how to improve U.S. counterterrorism policy in a specific area.

The “lessons learned” and recommendations from the 9/11 Commission Report, and the laws and policies passed following 9/11, directly influence contemporary U.S. counterterrorism strategies. One area that received significant attention was intelligence. Information gathering is an important tool for predicting and preventing terrorist attacks and warning government officials and citizens of potentially imminent terrorist attacks. However, there are many challenges related to collecting intelligence and issuing warnings. In this course, you explore pre- and post-9/11 counterterrorism strategies and consider some of the challenges related to ensuring the effectiveness of counterterrorism efforts.

As you near the end of the course, you take an in-depth look at international law, its impact on the designation, detainment, and treatment of suspected terrorists, and the political, legal, and ethical issues related to the treatment of detainees. As you do so, you consider the complexities related to how to best manage suspected terrorists during times of war. You also reflect on the future of Al Qaeda in the coming years and consider how the U.S. might amend or adapt its structures, policies, and strategies to address the evolving terrorist threat.

Motivations of Terrorists

What motivates a man like Osama Bin Laden to encourage the use of indiscriminate violence to further his political objectives? How, if at all, do his motivations differ from those of terrorists of a previous generation, such as Carlos the Jackal? Although it is common, even stereotypical, to consider terrorists as all having similar view points, in most cases they are distinctly different. Goals and motivations vary at the organizational and individual levels. Socialization, revenge, and perceived injustice are all possible motivations, but, like causes of terrorism, there is no single explanation behind each act.

To prepare for this Discussion:

Review the Course Introduction, located above in BOLD. Keep this overview in mind as you work through each week of the course.

Review Chapter 1 in the course text Terrorism in Perspective. Reflect on the motivations of terrorists.

Review Chapter 4 in the course text Introduction to Homeland Security: Understanding Terrorism with an Emergency Management Perspective and the assigned pages of Chapters 3 and 7 in the course text Terrorism in Perspective. Reflect on motivations of specific terrorists.

Select a terrorist to use for this assignment. You may select any individuals mentioned in the Learning Resources, the FBI “Most Wanted Terrorists” website: http://www.fbi.gov/wanted/terrorists/fugitives.htm, or another of your choosing. Note: Do not choose Osama Bin Laden.

Using the Learning Resources, Walden’s Library, and/or the Internet, research the motivations of the terrorist you selected.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 2 a brief description of the terrorist you selected. Then explain the motivations of the terrorist. Be specific and use examples to illustrate your explanation.

Note: Put the name of the terrorist you selected in the first line of your post. You will be asked to respond to a colleague who selected a terrorist that you did not.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.

One and a half page with at least two reference….

Senior Project in Healthcare

Approved Topic: Analyze the impact of technology on how health care services are delivered. The impact of technology on employee performance, organizational structure, and management planning may also be considered.

After identifying your topic, choose a health care organization in your area. This organization may be small or large and may provide single inpatient health service or multiple outpatient services; it is your choice. Consider your topic in light of the leadership of this organization and research the challenges and successes it has faced in managing operational effectiveness.  You are welcome to use as many research methods as possible to obtain information for your organization and its managers (e.g., web-based resources, electronic articles, or personal interviews). The more informed you are, the better prepared you will be to complete your project.

Finally, develop a management training program that includes relevant guidelines and information to combat the issues identified in the selected topic, as well as recommendations for managers to more effectively lead health care organizations. Your training program should be in the form of a 20 to 25 slide PowerPoint presentation (excluding title and reference slides) that includes comprehensive speaker’s notes (i.e., at least 150 words) for each slide. Utilize at least three to five scholarly sources from the University Library and two to three current, scholarly web sources (total of five to eight references required). All sources must be cited according to APA style as outlined in the Writing Center. Your presentation must be engaging and relevant to your audience. Lines of text on a slide will not be sufficient for this project. It should contain at least five images, graphics, and/or multimedia that communicate your training clearly to your audience. For tips on creating an excellent presentation, read this overview.

Creating the Senior Project

The Senior Project:

  1. Must be 20 to 25 PowerPoint slides (excluding title and reference slides) in length. There are 20 content criteria worth a total of 10 points.
  2. Must include a title slide that contains the following:
    1. Title of project
    2. Your name
    3. Course name and number
    4. Instructor’s name

Applying Epidemiology

Epidemiology is the study of epidemics. More specifically, it is the study of the occurrence and distribution of health problems. Using any of the epidemiological techniques outlined in the chapters from this week’s reading, address the questions for one of the case studies outlined below.

There are two parts to this assignment:

Part I: Provide a brief statement of the investigative issue. Describe the epidemiological steps you would take by addressing the questions asked
within the case study you select.

Part II: Address the questions noted at the end of your selected case study. Your paper should be at least four pages in length, but can exceed this depending on how much detail you provide on the epidemiological steps you take for your case. You should use at least one additional scholarly source in addition to the textbook. Format your paper and all citations according to APA style guidelines as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

Carefully review the
Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your assignment.

For the assignment due on day 7, you are to select one of the case assignments found under the Week 2 assignment tab.  With this assignment, instead of writing a paper, you may copy each question and provide your response below each question.  The assignment should be completed in a MS Word document.  As a reminder, there is a Part I and a Part II.

You should use at least one additional scholarly source in addition to the textbook. Format your paper and all citations according to APA style guidelines as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
