In the Preface of All that is Solid Melts into Air, Berman writes “to be modern is to live a life of paradox and contradiction”(Berman 13) with descriptions such as: “a unity of disunity” (15), and “self-discovery and self-mockery” (23). This demonstrates the ‘uncertainty’ concept of modernism. Furthermore, Berman emphasizes how modernity has come to today as an “age that has lost touch with the roots of its own modernity” (17).
