HSC 4572 Calcium Log

Graded up to 50 points. Late assignments may be considered and scores will be reduced by 50%.

1. List ONE COMPLETE day (not just soda and a cookie) of your typical food intake

a) Include portion sizes

b) One food item per line

c) Please group all foods from one meal or snack together (that is, all of lunch together). This will help you be sure you’ve included everything you ate at that time

d) Try to eat very typically. The goal is not to drink 4 glasses of milk if you do not normally do that, just to show that you know how to meet the AI for calcium. There are no extra points for meeting the AI. Remember, peak bone mass is achieved by the age of 30, and most of you still have a few years before reaching 30.

2. Find the milligrams (mg) of calcium from the foods you ate using:

a. http://ndb.nal.usda.gov/ or https://www.iofbonehealth.org/osteoporosis-musculoskeletal-disorders/osteoporosis/prevention/calcium/calcium-content-common-foods

[preferred sources]

OR

b. the label on the food Calcium on labels is not always listed. When it is, it is listed as a % below the main part of the label. Change the % to a decimal and multiply times 1000mg, which is the DV(so 20% becomes 0.2, times 1000mg equals 200mg) [preferred source], OR

c. an online source other than the ones noted above (not preferred source, due to discrepancies between different databases).

3. If you routinely take a supplement that contains calcium, please include it in the chart.

4. Be sure to provide a subtotal for each meal andthe daily total. Please bold subtotals and daily totals, makes it so much easier to pick out –thank you.

5. Chart in the book shows “salmon w/bones, 3oz” = 210mg calcium; this is accurate, but not realistic. Salmon is no longer marketed with bones; a 7oz fillet has 10mg, ½ a 6oz can of salmon has 60mg. So please do not use that salmon information from the chart in your text.
