Rejecting Opportunities Strategically

In this SLP, you are given two scenarios that require you to reject opportunities using written communication. These scenarios are a continuation of your job search, begun in SLP 1. In your submissions, you are expected to apply the concepts covered in this module.

(1) You have been approached by a head hunter who has a job for you. You need to have a solid understanding of these important concepts in order to successfully complete this assignment.

We will once again be applying the concepts from this module to your own experiences as a way of finding potential ways to develop your leadership skills. For this assignment, choose a current or former supervisor or subordinate and think carefully about how the concepts from the Johari Window and Transactional Analysis applies to this current or previous supervisor/subordinate relationship. Think carefully about the flow of information and communication between the two of you, and also times when either of you behaved as “adults,” “parents,” or “children” in your dealings with each other. Don’t worry, this assignment will be purely between you and your instructor so feel free to be as honest and self-reflective as you can.

More specifically, write a 4- to 5-page paper answering the following questions below. Make sure to cite at least one of the required readings in each answer, and to cite at least three sources total from the background readings in your paper:

There is detailed analysis of the company’s international and domestic presence, its strength and weakness, and the challenges from external environment. To access the SWOT report, log in to WKU library website using your netID, under “Databases”, choose “Business Source Premier”, then search using company name and “SWOT”. For example, when you search SWOT report for Burger King, search “Burger King” in title AND “SWOT” in abstract, sort the result by publication date (newest first), then you will see the most current DataMonitor/MarketLine SWOT report on the top of the list. You can search the SWOT report for your focal company and its major competitors. 

For Question 2, choice of entry mode, you should base your choice on textbook sections and the results from Question 1. If your target market has low political risk and low economic risk, then you can choose licensing/franchising/joint venture/wholly-owned subsidiaries, or a combination of these, such as setting up a joint-venture with a local company as the master franchisee and then set up franchising network around the joint-venture (as Starbucks did in some overseas market); if both risks are high, your choice will be tipped toward non-equity options, i.e. licensing/franchising. But if only political risk is high, and economic risk is low, you may want to consider joint venture again, because a local partner can offer protection or knowledge to navigate the political system in the host country.

Think back to your earliest management classes, you should remember the four functions of management. How might this management process play a role in managing a diverse workforce? In order to reach that inclusive working environment, each of these four functions will play a role.

A diversity vision and a plan with which to implement this vision are essential to the success of diversity initiatives. Together these steps create a well-mapped path toward a specific goal and they also provide control methods in which successes and failures can be measured.
