Factors and Trends that Influence Strategy Development

In this module, you will explore how businesses react to changing economic times and the influence this has on product and service positioning in the market place. You will also learn about the different approaches an organization may take such as a retrenchment approach, an investment approach, or an ambidextrous approach to provide a foundation for opportunity and risk in recessionary times.

Consumer spending habits have undergone dramatic and enduring change with the slowed economy in the United States.

Using the module readings, Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, respond to the following:

  • What are the factors that are key for establishing product differentiation in the new post-recession consumer environment especially as it relates to economic indicators?
  • What is a luxury good and should marketers of luxury goods abandon their efforts to establish premium pricing?
  • How do changes in societal attitudes toward companies and products affect the way marketers of consumer goods think about the customer value chain? Provide examples of companies that have changed their approach to marketing in response to a shift in consumers’ value in changing economic times.

Write your initial response in approximately 300 words.

Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

Discussion Post #2

In a properly functioning economic market, where does the economic value created by firms go? In other words, who gets it? Why?Think about the phrase “properly functioning economic market” in the previous sentence. What does this mean? This assumption (“in a properly functioning economic market. . .”) is intended to imply that Figure 1 is a closed system (i.e. that it’s possible, for example, for individual firms to operate in a market context without producing externalities, positive or negative). Is this really possible? For example, given that firm behavior has the potential to contribute to the stability (or instability) of the larger economic system itself, doesn’t this imply that firms always have some systemic or social responsiblity? Systemic analysis is about understanding the role of firms in the larger social system. Take a look at the rectangle labeled “firms” in the above sketch. What kind of control, if any, should society be able to exercise over what goes on in this box? How can (do) firms exercise influence over society with regard to societal attempts to control firm behavior (see arrows #4 and #5 above)?

Management

Disorder Case Studies 2

Part 1: Case Studies

Identify the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria that you notice in the case studies below and explain how the client meets the criteria. Include the diagnosis that these symptoms are related to. Your response to each case study should be 50 to 75 words.

  1. Allyson is a 25-year-old who works from home. She is happy with her work-at-home job, because she prefers not to be around people. She is afraid she will say or do something that is embarrassing. She has seen a therapist who referred her to a psychiatrist who prescribed antianxiety medication. More recently, she has been taking more than prescribed and continues to increase the dose a little each week because she finds that she does not feel as good with less.
  2. Karen is a 35-year-old wife and mother whose husband has become concerned about her drinking. He has noticed that she always appears to have a drink in hand, and when he asks her about it, she says that it is ginger ale or a coke; however, he believes she is mixing vodka with those drinks. Just recently, she had a DWI, and he confronted her about her drinking, after which she promised that she would stop. However, when she did stop, he noticed that she was constantly worrying, restless, and irritable.
  3. Mary is a 25-year-old single woman who currently is in a doctoral program. Mary has developed an extreme fear of germs and she is afraid of getting sick. Mary washes her hands 10-20 times per day. There are times when she is late for an appointment due to her needing to ensure that her hands are clean. She cleans her house constantly and often does not have time to complete her studies as a result. She experiences a great deal of anxiety when she is in situations where she is not able to control the environment. Some of her family and friends have commented on her behavior, which she admits to being a bit excessive, but she also states how easy it is to get sick and how many germs are out there.

Part 2: Treatment Scenarios

Provide a 50- to 75-word response to each of the following scenarios:

Imagine that you are working with a client who has been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. Select an anxiety disorder from the DSM-5 and discuss the approach you would you use for treating this client.

Imagine that you are working with a client who has been diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder. What approach would you use for treating this client?

How will you determine if a client is suffering from an anxiety or obsessive compulsive disorder, rather than a substance-induced disorder?

Include at least two scholarly references in your assignment.

While APA format is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected and in-text citations and references should be presented using APA documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

Assignment 1: What About the Contract?

Assignment 1: What About the Contract?

Maynard, 18, was shopping for his first car. With a mere $4,000, he was hoping for a deal. He found a used convertible 1979 Mustang at Pierre’s Awesome Car Place for $5,000. Pierre claimed that the Mustang was “one of a kind” and “the best car in town.” He said “the engine and brakes are in tip-top shape.” Pierre even promised to bring the price down to $4,000, if Maynard agreed to buy it that very day.

Maynard immediately signed an agreement that contained an “as-is” clause and drove off in the car. Two days later, the brakes failed while driving and Maynard crashed into a tree. The front of the car was damaged and Maynard sustained mild injuries. Infuriated, Maynard immediately towed the vehicle back to Pierre’s and confronted him. Pierre shrugged it off, saying, “Too bad, bad brakes or not, you agreed to the “as-is” clause in the contract!”

Now Maynard does not know what to do. He has lost two weeks of work pay due to the injury, a damaged car that cost him $4,000, and physical pain and mental trauma. To make things worse, Maynard discovered the car’s fair market value was actually only $1,500 at the time of the purchase.Research contract concepts related to formation and defenses to enforcement using your textbook, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet. Based on the facts of the case and your research, respond to the following questions:

  • Was a valid contract formed between Pierre’s and Maynard? Explain.
  • If a valid contract was formed, does Maynard have any arguments to have his money refunded?
  • What are Maynard’s rights under the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) with respect to the “as-is” agreement he signed?
  • What damages, if any, can Maynard sue Pierre’s for?
  • Discuss any ethical issues concerning Pierre’s behavior.

Assignment 1: LASA 2: Employee Development and Performance Appraisal

Assignment 1: LASA 2: Employee Development and Performance Appraisal

Submit your assignment to the M5: Assignment 1 Dropbox by Monday, April 10, 2017.

You are the vice president of a human resources department and Susan has been your executive assistant for one (1) year. She effectively completes her given assignments, sometimes ahead of schedule.  Susan has a welcoming personality and is commended on her willingness to help when asked. As a result of her efficiency, Susan often has spare time on her hands.

In several conversations, you have spoken with Susan about taking a proactive stance and involving herself in the business to increase her knowledge base. You have suggested she attend strategic planning meetings, shadow other Business Partners, and take professional development courses geared towards human resources.   Susan has not incorporated any of these suggestions.

The organization promotes and encourages employee development and has a requirement of 24 professional development (PD) hours for each employee per annual review cycle.  As VP of the department, you have offered to mentor Susan; yet she has not taken advantage of the offer. Given Susan’s capabilities and potential, you want to mutually establish future performance goals and developmental opportunities to enhance her effectiveness and maximize her organizational contributions.

Susan’s professional appearance and interaction with co-workers is superb.  When asked to complete a task, she fulfills the assignment willingly and with very few errors.  She is well liked and respected by her peers.  She has impeccable oral and written communication skills. Overall, you are pleased with her performance but want to see Susan take initiative to seek out tasks to complete rather than waiting to be told what to do.

As the VP of HR, you have been tasked with a two part assignment. In part one of this assignment you will explain the importance of performance appraisals, analyze the essential elements which should be included and describe how performance appraisals can be used to promote employee growth. In part two of this assignment you will create a performance appraisal for Susan.

Your paper should be 8-10 pages in length incorporating both parts I and II.  You can either design a performance appraisal document or use an existing template.  The performance appraisal should be no more than 3 pages of the total page count for the assignment.  Be sure your paper addresses all of the following components:

Part I: Importance of Performance Appraisals:

  • Explain how performance appraisals can be used as part of employee development.
  • Explain why rankings are given to employees and the advantages and disadvantages of including rankings.
  • Address why organizations should deliver appraisals in a timely manner to employees.
  • Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of three different types of performance appraisals. Make a recommendation of which type of performance appraisal is most appropriate for Susan.
  • Provide suggestions on how the manager can give feedback on a continual basis to the employee to encourage continual development.

Part II: Susan’s Performance Evaluation

As the VP of HR, you are providing Susan with feedback on these areas and suggesting ways to develop in the areas where she is not meeting expectations as outlined in the scenario. The performance appraisal directly ties to compensation increases. The appraisal should highlight achievements over the past year; while addressing expectations and setting goals moving forward.

The performance evaluation should address the following areas:Professional Development Job performanceCommunication – internal and external Professional DemeanorWorking relationshipsCompensation recommendations

  • Compare and contrast the following items, pointing out their key elements:
    • Gross revenue and net revenue
    • Patient service revenue and other revenue
    • Charity care and bad debt losses on the income sheet

week 8

“Distributions to Shareholders and Capital Structure Decisions”  Please respond to the following:

  • * From the e-Activity, contrast the differences between a stock dividend and a stock split. Imagine that you are a stockholder in a company. Determine whether you would prefer to see the company that you researched declare a 100% stock dividend or declare a 2-for-1 split. Provide support for your answer with one (1) real-world example of your preference.
  • * From the scenario, examine the dividend rate that TFC is paying in order to determine if the company should receive a rate adjustment. Suggest whether TFC’s dividends should either (1) stay the same; (2) be increased; (3) or go down. Provide a rationale for your response.

STATEMENT

  • Think back to a time when you had a supervisor or coworker who you believe made an unethical decision or exhibited unethical behavior. List at least two reasons why you think people are tempted to act unethically. Describe the most effective safe guards that you believe an organization can put into place to prevent unethical behavior within the organization.

The situation that comes to mind that a coworker exhibited unethical decision making was when I first joined the sales team that I am currently on.  The coworker offered the client the option to update their equipment that offered a promotional discount.  Instead of disclosing their cost line by line, he bundled our upsell items that paid out a premium to the sales commission for my coworker.  After this transaction was processed I had the conversation with him asking why he behaved in this manner and why they believed it wouldn’t come back to them in a negative way.  He waved the conversation off and said he did it all of the time.  Later that week the customer received the equipment and saw a commercial for the same items and was so upset thinking they were taken advantage of.  They wound up returning all of the equipment and we lost the account and the employee had to give the commission back to the company and was disciplined.

The reasons for this behavior, in my opinion first is that individuals without a core level of integrity find ways around the system thinking that eyes are not on them.  They get away with this and find it somewhat energizing that they avoided accountability.  The other driving force is that there are financial benefits.  The employee was paid a high rate for the transaction they completed and money in a sales role is or should be one of the main motivators as why they get into the industry.

An effective safeguard for an organization is to complete audits and do so in a public manner.  The risk of getting caught with your hand in the cookie jar and being held accountable is a risk most people would care to avoid.  Decisions are made by weighing the consequences and if the risk outweighs the reward, the unethical behavior has the potential to seize or stop all together.

Week 5. Due Monday 12PM

Situational Leadership Theory and Organizational Leadership

As the new top-level executive of a medium-sized corporation, you have noticed that the leadership culture in the organization has been ineffective, which has lowered employee morale. To change the leadership culture you have decided to discuss this issue with all the managers and supervisors in the organization. Prior to meeting with all the managers and supervisors, you have decided that you need to develop a how-to guide on effective leadership.

In a four- to five-page paper (excluding the title and references pages), explain why situational leadership theory is useful and relevant in developing an effective leadership culture. Describe the three theories of situational leadership and what you consider to be the strengths and weaknesses of each theory when leading staff in the organizational environment.

The written assignment should include at least three scholarly sources, in addition to the text, and be formatted according to APA style

Week3part2

Capstone Forum: Assignment With Peer Review: Core Skills, Competencies, and Capabilities of Your Capstone Organization

Now it is time to apply lessons learned from this week’s case analysis and discussion about internal resource assessment, this week’s readings, and other resources, to help you think about how you might answer the question, which capabilities must be in place (for my Capstone organization to win)?

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Review all required readings, including the Weekly Briefing, which provides additional guidance on how to complete the Assignment.
  • Review this week’s case study and peer discussion and reflect and make notes on the following: What insights did you gain, and what did you learn from this week’s resources your case analysis and peer discussion that you can apply to your Strategy Playbook for your chosen organization? What conceptual and strategic differences are important between the case example and your organization (focus on the concepts analyzed this week)? What assumptions do you need to make in order to use the strategy concepts appropriately?
  • Identify and review all relevant readings from the MBA Capstone Program Bibliography. Given your chosen organization, what concepts, tools, and readings from the Program Capstone Bibliography are most relevant to helping guide how you might recommend improving the company? How and why are they relevant?
  • Locate and maintain access to publicly available information about your organization.

By Day 5, post a polished and synthesized entry into the discussion area, which will also be the basis for an entry into the final draft of your Strategy Playbook for Extraordinary Results. At minimum you should add the following to your discussion post and Strategy Playbook:

  • An evidence-based and cohesive set of specific and actionable recommendations for actions (based on application of this week’s strategy concepts), that your selected organization can take that will clearly enable your organization to achieve its strategic goals, sustain and grow its business, and remain viable and healthy.
    • HINT: You should provide a preliminary argument that defends your recommendations. Consider why your recommendations are SMART– specific, measurable, achievable (that is realistic and feasible, and timely (relevant and important).
  • A related set of metrics that will enable your selected organization to measure the effectiveness of your recommended actions.
    • HINT: These metrics could then be used in the comprehensive final draft of your strategy playbook diagram, which is part of your final Strategy Playbook.

General Guidance: Your original discussion post for the Capstone Forum will typically be 1 to 1 ½ single-spaced pages, excluding references. Refer to the Week 3 Discussion 2 rubric for grading elements and criteria. Your Instructor will use the rubric to assess your work.

Note: After you receive input from your colleagues, in the next few days you should revise your original post to reflect input that you think is helpful and strengthens your position. This final revised version from this week’s Capstone Forum will become the second formal entry into your Strategy Playbook appendix. Title this section “Internal Resource Analysis for XYZ [Insert Organization Name],” and be sure to keep a version of your response in your Strategy Playbook template. As a best practice you should plan to review your playbook throughout the course as you continue to build your components. You may find that you have new ideas and items that further improve your work.

Homework Help with Case Study

Read the following case study. Ben Davis had just completed an intensive course in Statistical Thinking for Business Improvement, which was offered to all employees of a large health maintenance organization. There was no time to celebrate, however, because he was already under a lot of pressure. Ben works as a pharmacist’s assistant in the HMO’s pharmacy, and his manager, Juan de Pacotilla, was about to be fired. Juan’s dismissal appeared to be imminent due to numerous complaints and even a few lawsuits over inaccurate prescriptions. Juan now was asking Ben for his assistance in trying to resolve the problem, preferably yesterday! “Ben, I really need your help! If I can’t show some major improvement or at least a solid plan by next month, I’m history.” “I’ll be glad to help, Juan, but what can I do? I’m just a pharmacist’s assistant.” “I don’t care what your job title is; I think you’re just the person who can get this done. I realize I’ve been too far removed from day-to-day operations in the pharmacy, but you work there every day. You’re in a much better position to find out how to fix the problem. Just tell me what to do, and I’ll do it.” “But what about the statistical consultant you hired to analyze the data on inaccurate prescriptions?” “Ben, to be honest, I’m really disappointed with that guy. He has spent two weeks trying to come up with a new modeling approach to predict weekly inaccurate prescriptions. I tried to explain to him that I don’t want to predict the mistakes, I want to eliminate them! I don’t think I got through, however, because he said we need a month of additional data to verify the model, and then he can apply a new method he just read about in a journal to identify ‘change points in the time series,’ whatever that means. But get this, he will only identify the change points and send me a list; he says it’s my job to figure out what they mean and how to respond. I don’t know much about statistics — the only thing I remember from my course in college is that it was the worst course I ever took– but I’m becoming convinced that it actually doesn’t have much to offer in solving real problems. You’ve just gone through this statistical thinking course, though, so maybe you can see something I can’t. To me, statistical thinking sounds like an oxymoron. I realize it’s a long shot, but I was hoping you could use this as the project you need to officially complete the course.” “I see your point, Juan. I felt the same way, too. This course was interesting, though, because it didn’t focus on crunching numbers. I have some ideas about how we can approach making improvements in prescription accuracy, and I think this would be a great project. We may not be able to solve it ourselves, however. As you know, there is a lot of finger-pointing going on; the pharmacists blame sloppy handwriting and incomplete instructions from doctors for the problem; doctors blame pharmacy assistants like me who actually do most of the computer entry of the prescriptions, claiming that we are incompetent; and the assistants tend to blame the pharmacists for assuming too much about our knowledge of medical terminology, brand names, known drug interactions, and so on.” “It sounds like there’s no hope, Ben!” “I wouldn’t say that at all, Juan. It’s just that there may be no quick fix we can do by ourselves in the pharmacy. Let me explain how I’m thinking about this and how I would propose attacking the problem using what I just learned in the statistical thinking course.” Source: G. C. Britz, D. W. Emerling, L. B. Hare, R. W. Hoerl, & J. E. Shade. “How to Teach Others to Apply Statistical Thinking.” Quality Progress (June 1997): 67–80.

Assuming the role of Ben Davis, write a three to four (3-4) page paper in which you apply the approach discussed in the textbook to this problem. You’ll have to make some assumptions about the processes used by the HMO pharmacy. Also, please use the Internet and / or Strayer LRC to research articles on common problems or errors that pharmacies face. Your paper should address the following points:

1.    Develop a process map about the prescription filling process for HMO’s pharmacy, in which you specify the key problems that the HMO’s pharmacy might be experiencing. Next, use the supplier, input, process steps, output, and customer (SIPOC) model to analyze the HMO pharmacy’s business process.

2.    Analyze the process map and SIPOC model to identify possible main root causes of the problems. Next, categorize whether the main root causes of the problem are special causes or common causes. Provide a rationale for your response.

3.    Suggest the main tools that you would use and the data that you would collect in order to analyze the business process and correct the problem. Justify your response.

4.    Propose one (1) solution to the HMO pharmacy’s on-going problem(s) and propose one (1) strategy to measure the aforementioned solution. Provide a rationale for your response.

5.    Use at least two (2) quality references. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

·         Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.

·         Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

Rate of Return for Stocks and Bonds

Purpose of Assignment

The purpose of this assignment is to allow the student an opportunity to calculate the rate of return of equity and debt instruments. It allows the student to understand the effects of dividends; capital gains; inflation rates; and how the nominal rate of return affects valuation and pricing. The assignment also allows the student to apply concepts related to CAPM, WACC, and Flotation Costs to understand the influence of debt and equity on the company’s capital structure.

Journal Entry – Chapter 17

Chapter 17: Agency – Chapter 17 – Journal Entry

Gilbert Church owned a horse-breeding farm in Illinois. Ads for the breeding rights to the stallion Imperial Guard directed all inquiries to “Herb Bagley, Manager.” Vern and Gail Lundberg signed a preprinted contract with Bagley for those rights. Bagley added a handwritten statement that guaranteed the Lundbergs “six live foals in the first two years.” The Lundbergs had obtained one foal when Church moved Imperial Guard to Oklahoma. The Lundbergs filed a suit in an Illinois state court against Church for breach of contract. Church claimed that Bagley was not authorized to sign contracts for Church or to change or add terms. The jury awarded the Lundbergs $147,000 in damages. Church appealed.

A state intermediate appellate court affirmed. A principal may be bound by the unauthorized acts of an agent if the principal leads a third party to believe, or allows a third party to believe, that the agent has authority to perform the act. In this case, Church approved the ad listing Bagley as Church’s manager and point of contact. The contract had a preprinted line for his signature. Church was not engaged in the negotiation or signing of the contracts. Under these circumstances, a reasonable third party would believe that Bagley had the authority to modify the preprinted contract.

Would it have affected the outcome of this case if Bagley were construed as an independent contractor? Explain.

Please write no more than two paragraphs answering the above questions.  Remember to support your answers with evidence not just opinion.  Upload your answer to the dropbox.  For grading criteria, refer to the Journal Entry Rubric under Course Home on the left. Please do your own work and use proper grammar and spelling.

Sometimes one’s choices may involve catastrophic decisions and bear great risk and yet there can be no clear answer. For example, if a person gets a divorce, shutters a plant, sells a losing investment, or closes their business, will he or she be better off? The following case incorporates nearly all of the material you have covered this far and presents an example of one such choice where nearly all of the alternatives have a significant downside risk.

Review the following information from the article “A Cost-Benefit Analysis of the New Orleans Flood Protection System” by Stéphane Hallegatte (2005):

  • Hallegatte, an environmentalist, assigns a probability (p) of a Katrina-like hurricane of 1/130 in his cost-benefit analysis for flood protection. However, the levees that protect New Orleans also put other regions at greater risk. You may assume the frequency of other floods is greater than Katrina-like events (Vastag & Rein, 2011).
  • The new levees that were built in response to Katrina cost approximately fourteen billion dollars (in 2010). This is in addition to the direct costs of Katrina (eighty-one billion dollars in 2005).
  • 50 percent of New Orleans is at or below sea level.
  • A 100-year event means that there is a 63 percent chance that such an event will occur within a 100-year period.
  • The following are the interested (anchored and/or biased) constituencies:
    • Residents of New Orleans—both those that can move and those who cannot move
    • Residents of the surrounding floodplains at risk from New Orleans levees
    • The Mayor of New Orleans
    • The federal government—specifically taxpayers and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)

Assume that the availability heuristics make people more risk averse (populations drop, at least in the short term). Consider how this would affect the local economy.

You are an analyst at FEMA and are in charge of developing a recommendation for both the state and the local governments on whether or not to redevelop New Orleans.

Write a report with your recommendation. Address the following in your report:

Part A

  • Analyze the economics of New Orleans in light of the above parameters and develop your own Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) for rebuilding.
  • Evaluate the value of the CBA for each constituency and integrate these estimates into a scenario model and/or decision tree. Analyze the results.
  • Clearly each of these constituencies may both overlap and be prey to a variety of group dynamics internally. For one of these options, discuss the decision pitfalls to which they may be susceptible and make a recommendation on how to alleviate these pressures.
  • Starting with your CBA, estimate the relevant expected utility for the interested constituencies.

Note: You need not have absolute amounts but your relevant utilities should be proportional to one another.Hint: If you assume that your total CBA for New Orleans is fixed for each constituency (do not forget the overlaps), then each constituency will have a piece of the utility pie.

Part B

  • Make a case for or against rebuilding the city of New Orleans. This should be an executive summary; be concise and brief. Include exhibits.
  • Whether you are for or against, discuss how social heuristics could be used to your advantage, both ethically and unethically, in making your case. You may choose to fill the role of one of the constituents, if you prefer.

Write an 8–12-page report in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use proper spelling and grammar throughout, and keep the text legible and balanced with visuals.

Case Study 1: Cyber Security in Business Organizations

35Protecting organizational assets and information within the company has become a top priority for many organizational leaders.

Review the article titled “Missed Alarms and 40 Million Stolen Credit Card Numbers: How Target Blew It”, located here.

Write a four to six (4-6) page paper in which you:

  1. Determine the fundamental challenges that organizations face in general in regard to protecting organizational assets and information.
  2. Specify the red flag(s) that Target overlooked or ignored before the retail attack and give your opinion as to why Target overlooked or ignored the red flag(s).
  3. Determine the main actions that Target took after the breach occurred and evaluate the efficiency of such actions.
  4. Conclude the main reasons why the attack on Target occurred. Give your opinion as to whether or not the attack was mainly due to the poor infrastructure or the inability of management to act accordingly. Justify your response.

Introduction of OPM, Products, and Productivity

The fundamental reference for all four SLP assignments is the Department of Defense Continuous Process Improvement Transformation Guidebook. You should acquaint yourself with its contents before beginning the first SLP, refer to it throughout the course, and cite relevant portions as you prepare each SLP assignment.

_____________________________________________

The Google online dictionary defines the noun “process” as, “A series of actions or steps taken to achieve a particular end.” The Business Dictionary (Webfinance, 2017a) gives a more specific definition: “A sequence of interdependent and linked procedures which, at every stage, consume one or more resources (employee time, energy, machines, money) to convert inputs (data, material, parts, etc.) into outputs. These outputs then serve as inputs for the next stage until a known goal or end result is reached.”

Deciding what belongs and what doesn’t belong to a particular process can be challenging. A common cliché states that “Everything is connected to everything else.” Here’s an example. Buying a cup of coffee at Starbucks is connected to:

  • Making paper products (the cup)
  • Making paper
  • The pulpwood industry
  • Forest management
  • Climate and climate change
  • The coffee industry
  • Production of coffee beans
  • International trade agreements
  • Electricity production (for roasting and grinding beans)

We could spin the list out indefinitely; electricity production, for example, is related to the production of fossil fuels, which in turn is affected by the political stability of the Gulf states, etc. But the further afield we go, the less relevance there is to that cup of coffee.

As the Webfinance (2017a) definition implies, any process consists of subprocesses, each of which can be considered a process in its own right. Staying with the coffee example:

  • “Selling hot beverages” is a process within “Running a Starbucks franchise.”
  • “Selling coffee products” is a process within “Selling hot beverages.”
  • “Making a macchiato” is a process within “Selling coffee products.”

Even greater levels of detail could be specified. For example, “Filling a cup” could be considered as a discrete process, consisting of taking a cup from a dispenser, placing it under the espresso machine, loading the machine with coffee, starting the machine, waiting, removing the cup from under the machine, and passing it to the server. Some coffee products may require additional steps, such as foaming milk with steam.

The first task in Continuous Process Improvement is to identify the process. We must decide exactly what, for our purposes, is part of the process, and what is not. This decision is arbitrary. Here are some examples.

  • The shift manager at Starbucks wants to make the coffee-serving process more efficient, but she’s not interested in the larger process of managing the franchise.
  • A records clerk at a medical clinic wants to in-process new patients more efficiently, but he’s not involved in patient management beyond that point.
  • An industrial engineer wants to assemble auto engines more efficiently, but he doesn’t care about the efficiency of the processes used to manufacture the crankshafts, blocks, valves, camshafts, spark plugs, and so forth.
  • A political functionary, working from a list, wants to get people to a demonstration, but she isn’t concerned with either compiling or maintaining the list.

As we’ve implied, every process takes place in a larger context (we could also say environment), which provides the resources, inputs, and outputs. The context for each of the items above would be:

  • A Starbucks franchise.
  • A medical clinic.
  • An auto assembly line.
  • A political organization.

Identifying the process within its context consists of identifying the specific resources allocated to that process, its inputs, and its outputs.

SLP Assignment: Process Identification

Think of a specific process you’re familiar with. The process should be sufficiently important to merit improvement, and also sufficiently complex to offer room for improvement. Filling a coffee cup, for example, could be considered a process, and may be important, but it’s so simple that it’s difficult to see how it could be improved. On the other hand; running an aircraft repair facility is a process within the larger process of running an Air Force Wing, and while it’s definitely important, it would be too complex for this SLP.

Any process is embedded in a context. This is the organization which provides its resources, its inputs, and either consumes or distributes its output.

Before going further, please read all of the SLP assignments, to make sure you don’t do everything at once. That would result in an overly long paper, which despite its length, wouldn’t have sufficient details or adequate explanations. For this SLP, the specific tasks are:

  • Describe an organization you’re familiar with. Ideally, you’re either working for this organization, or have in the recent past. The description should be detailed enough to support the second task, which is to:
  • Describe a specific process that takes place within the organization. As noted above, the process should be important enough, and complex enough, to meet the needs of all four SLP assignments. The process description should include, in as much detail as possible,
    • what the process does,
    • the resources dedicated to the process by the organization,
    • the inputs consumed by the process, and
    • the outputs produced by the process.
  • What sort of improvement could be made in the process? It’s not important to be specific, since Continuous Process Improvement (CPI) envisions incremental changes that take place over an extended period of time. All that’s required is a general statement, such as “make easier,” “reduce error rate,” or “increase efficiency with respect to the (labor/materials/time) required.”

Bear in mind that resources, inputs, and outputs may consist of materials, products, or services, or any combination thereof.

SLP Assignment Expectations

  1. There are no page limits. Write what you need to write, neither more nor less. Make each sentence count! (Having said that; it’s unlikely that one page would be enough, and very likely that eight pages would be too much.)
  2. Ensure that your answer reflects your detailed understanding of the theory and techniques taught in this module.
  3. References and citations are required. This requirement can be satisfied by citing the module Home page, and (for the SLP) the DOD CPI Guidebook.

Divorce is a common occurrence that you should have already read about. The book gives many reasons as to why the familial structure has changed since the Industrial Revolution.  Discuss why divorce is more common. Why are the statistics not that different for the church and non-believers? Do you think the trends will continue or change? What do you think can be implemented by communities, the government, or the church to increase the stability of the familial structure?

Assignment 4: Legal and Ethical Considerations in Marketing, Product Safety, and Intellectual Property

Assignment 4: Legal and Ethical Considerations in Marketing, Product Safety, and Intellectual PropertyYou are a new associate at the law firm of Dewey, Chetum, and Howe. John, a former researcher at PharmaCARE, comes to your office. He has concerns about PharmaCARE’s use of AD23, one of the company’s top-selling diabetes drugs. Two (2) years ago, after PharmaCARE’s research indicated that AD23 might also slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, John and his team of pharmacists began reformulating the drug to maximize that effect. In order to avoid the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) scrutiny, PharmaCARE established a wholly-owned subsidiary, CompCARE, to operate as a compounding pharmacy to sell the new formulation to individuals on a prescription basis. CompCARE established itself in a suburban office park near its parent’s headquarters. To conserve money and time, CompCARE did a quick, low-cost renovation.CompCARE benefited from PharmaCARE’s reputation, databases, networks, and sales and marketing expertise, and within six (6) months had the medical community buzzing about AD23. Demand soared, particularly among Medicare, Medicaid, and Veterans Affairs patients. Seeing the opportunity to realize even more profit, CompCARE began advertising AD23 directly to consumers and marketing the drug directly to hospitals, clinics, and physician offices, even though compounding pharmacies are not permitted to sell drugs in bulk for general use. To circumvent this technicality, CompCARE encouraged doctors to fax lists of fictitious patient names to CompCARE. PharmaCARE sold CompCARE to WellCo, a large drugstore chain, just weeks before AD23 was publicly linked to over 200 cardiac deaths. As CompCARE and its new parent company enjoyed record profits and PharmaCARE’s stock price approached $300 per share, reports started surfacing that people who received AD23 seemed to be suffering heart attacks at an alarming rate. The company ignored this data and continued filling large orders and paying huge bonuses to all the executives and managers, including John, whose wife recently died from a heart attack after using AD23.John has come to you with an internal company memo describing the potential problems with AD23, and information describing the company’s willingness “roll the dice” and continue to market the drug.Your senior partner has asked you to write a memo outlining the following issues for review by the senior partners. In preparation for this assignment, use the Internet or Strayer Library to research examples of intellectual property theft that occurred within the past two (2) years.Write an eight to ten (8-10) page paper in which you:1.    Research three to five (3-5) ethical issues relating to marketing and advertising, intellectual property, and regulation of product safety and examine whether PharmaCARE violated any of the issues in question.2.    Argue for or against Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) marketing by drug companies. Provide support for your response.3.    Determine the parties responsible for regulating compounding pharmacies under the current regulatory scheme, the actions that either these parties or the FDA could / should have taken in this scenario, and whether PharmaCARE could face legal exposure surrounding its practices. Support your response.4.    Analyze the manner in which PharmaCARE used U.S. law to protect its own intellectual property and if John has any claim to being the true “inventor” of AD23. Suggest at least three (3) ways the company could compensate John for the use of his intellectual property.5.    Summarize at least one (1) current example (within the past two [2] years) of intellectual property theft, and examine the effect on that company’s brand.6.    Analyze the potential issue surrounding the death of John’s wife and other potential litigants against PharmaCARE as a result of AD23.7.    Specify both the major arguments that John can make to claim that he is a whistleblower and the type of protections that he should be afforded. Justify your response.8.    Use at least three (3) quality resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia is not an acceptable reference and proprietary Websites do not qualify as academic resources.Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:•    Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.•    Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length

Discussion: Creative Teams and Creative Conflicts

Have you ever worked on a team that struggled to complete a project? In your first MBA course, Dynamic Leadership, you learned about the “big five” personality traits that can potentially lead to conflicts in the workplace; but differences in creative thinking styles can also keep a team from functioning effectively. The major thinking styles you will learn about this week can provide insight into the reasons why conflicts can arise among individuals and teams trying to innovate.

For example, perhaps you have worked on a team with someone who you thought asked too many questions or focused on what appeared to you to be insignificant details. As a leader, you need to learn how to accommodate a diversity of creative thinking styles in effective ways.

For this Discussion, you will consider your own creative thinking styles and how they differ from others in your current (or a past) workplace environment. Consider how different creative thinking styles can potentially create conflict among teams. You can review the five personality traits that were covered in a previous course by referring to the Digman article in the Optional Resources this week.

With these thoughts in mind:

By Day 3

Post a cohesive analysis using the scenario presented in this week’s media piece, Creative Teams and Creative Conflicts, in which a team is unable to make progress on a project. In your post, incorporate the following:

  • An analysis of the barriers that prevented the group from leveraging their differences and creating innovative ideas.
  • Three suggested ways that their process could be improved, despite their different styles.
  • An explanation of how you would approach the scenario differently and lead the group towards success if you were asked to lead the team.
  • A description of how you would implement the three ways you identified above to help the group improve.
  • Finally, include an explanation of how you could use the strategies described in this week’s chapter from Creative leadership: Skills that drive change to accommodate the diversity of thinking styles to lead the group in a unified direction.

Assignment 3: Calculating Financial Ratios

Vital to any ratio analysis are the steps of gathering financial data and selecting and calculating relevant ratios. This assignment provides you with an opportunity to do just that.

Task:

  • Download a company’s balance sheet and income statement from one of the many sites where financials are available, such as Zacks Investment Research or MarketWatch.
  • Choose five financial ratios, one from each of the five categories described in Chapter 3 of Brigham and Ehrhardt (i.e., liquidity, asset management, financial leverage, profitability, and market value) and look at them over a three-year period. Put your findings in a table with the years across the top (horizontal axis) and the ratios along the side (vertical axis). What do the findings tell you about the financial health of the company? How does your selected company compare to the industry?
  • Calculate each ratio using the information from the balance sheet and income statement.

Write a 2–3-page paper that reports your findings. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

Submission Details:

  • By Saturday, March 25, 2017, save your report as M1_A3_lastname_firstinitial.doc and upload to the M1: Assignment 3 Dropbox.

Discussion—Integration of Technology

Discussion—Integration of Technology

Technology has changed the way we conduct business on a daily basis. A number of organizations have opted for integrating systems and sharing information with their counterparts.

Using the Argosy University online library resources and the Internet, research information technology (IT) systems for supply chains.

Then respond to the following:

  • As a manager, if you have to design an IT system for supply chain purposes using a cross-functional team, who would you include on your team and why?
  • Explain some of the trade-offs you would consider when designing/acquiring the system. Be specific and support your reasoning with examples.

Write your initial response in 200 to 300 words. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

New purchase

Please solve the problems below and share your solution in this discussion thread. Please provide your detailed calculations (either pasted into your response directly or as an attachment in Excel). Note that the goal of this discussion is to benefit from peer learning on the calculations. If you don’t know the answer, please give it your best attempt and post your solution. (Your grade on the discussion is related your effort and contribution to the discussion and is not dependent on having solved the problem correctly initially.)

Your company is considering acquiring a new machine. The base price of the machine is $235,000. It would cost $25,000 more to install the machine and make appropriate customizations. The accounting department said these costs can be depreciated in a straight-line manner based on an economic life for the machine of 5 years. After 3 years the machine will be sold for $120,000. Purchasing this machine would require an increase in net working capital of $12,500. The machine would have no effect on revenues, but would likely save the company $75,000 per year in before-tax operating costs. The company’s marginal tax rate is 40%.

  1. What is the Year 0 (initial) cash flow?
  2. What are the net operating cash flows during the life of the project (Years 1, 2 and 3)?
  3. What is the end-of-project cash flow (i.e., the after-tax salvage and the return of working capital)?
  4. If the project’s cost of capital is 9%, should the machine be purchased?

Please explain, and show formula, on how you got answers…..
