Hello All,

First, I have to admit that my preference to discuss negative messages in person rather than in writing. This allows me to engage in the strategies discussed by Sittenfeld (1999): listening; exploring perceptions; validate experiences; and develop an action plan to address the issues.

Bowman asserts that a negative message is one that leads to an unpleasant emotional reaction. As a professor, I have to deliver “negative” letters all the time through my feedback. These letters can be viewed as disappointing and threatening (2002). I know that many of my students put a lot of time and effort into their papers. The time and effort is especially important because many of our students have families, professions, and other competing priorities they have to juggle in addition to school, and it is difficult to do so. I understand this.

I always try to build rapport through “buffer beginnings”. Whether the message is good or bad, it is important to take every opportunity to remain positive. Therefore, I typically start out with a statement like “thank you for your work on this essay”…or something like that. I also like to start out by identifying the strengths of the essay.

Then, I like to include a “lead” sentence like “there are a couple of ways your essay could be strengthened”.… Or something like that. Then I tried to be as specific as possible on strategies that students can take to improve the current essay in the ones moving forward. This section is meant in an attempt to accomplish certain outcomes (e.g. narrowing a student’s focus; improved writing structure; focusing on the readings more; etc.). Finally, I like to and the negative message with a motivating statement like “keep up the great work ethic” or “please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have questions or need more clarification on the feedback. I am invested in your success” (Bowman, 2002).

My experience is that students are generally receptive to the feedback when they read it. Most of our students have a high degree of integrity and genuinely want to earn their grade by making consistent improvement.

These are a couple of my strategies. What are some of yours?

You are the manager of a new primary care clinic located about twenty five (25) miles outside of a small city (population of 50,000). With five (5) family physicians, two (2) nurse practitioners, two (2) physicians’ assistants (PAs), and twenty (20) clinical support staff consisting of RNs, LPNs, and CMAs, the clinic provides primary care services to a diverse community of people living and working outside the city limits. Originally a rural area, the community has been growing and now includes promising opportunities in employment, education, and comfortable living spaces for young families. The central city includes two (2) large acute care facilities, and one (1) tertiary care facility that is known for its excellent pulmonary care. Both acute care hospitals provide the usual services such as labor and delivery, outpatient surgery, chronic diseases care, etc. and have fully equipped ancillary departments, such as lab and radiology. Up until this point, the residents have used the facilities’ emergency departments for routine illnesses and conditions when their private physicians were not readily available.

  1. Analyze some of the key social, political, and economic factors that have led to the proliferation of urgent care facilities and primary care practices over the last 20-30 years.

Class and Professor,

I have thoroughly enjoyed this class and our discussions throughout the modules. This class does a great job of building on the ethics training that I’ve received throughout my career in the Air Force. I will be able to use much of what I’ve learned especially in my current job of overseeing some of the Air Force’s largest contracts. Ethical dealings on both the contractor and the government side are vital to a successful business contract.

Module 1’s teachings about emotions and ethics was insightful! It brought clarification to something many of us do, which is “go with your intuition” about a particular choice or decision. Much of the teachings makes us think about all sides of the story, and take into account the diverse backgrounds and cultures we come from. Ensuring that our business conduct is moral and ethical is important to the success of our people and business. I will apply all of these concepts to my future business dealings.

Thank you for making this a fun eight weeks, and I’ve enjoyed the high amount of interaction through our discussion posts!
