Title of Article:A Quantitative Pilot Study on the Use of a Fitness Tracker in the preventive Management of Employees at Risk of Chronic Disease in a Health Care Facility.

” This study evaliates the outcomes of a nurse pracitioner-faciliated, smartphone management strategy utilizing a free smartphone application with overweight and obese adults to improve physiological indicators and quality of life” (Stukenberg & Friess, 2015).

Data Collection: The goal of this research project was to evaluate at-risk clinic employees. All participants were identified as being obese or overweight. The evaluation was done by using fitness trackers, diet and exercise/activity was also logged. Additionally, blood pressure, weight, waist circumference, BMI, and how the participants perceived quality of life were also collected as data for this study. The data was collected over a three-month period, while being monitored by a nurse practitioner. It is important to note that those who participated in this study received no benefits for participating and their employment status was not affected for participating in this study.

Data Analysis: Data was input in to an IBM software. At conclusion of the study only 17 out of 77 participants completed the 12-week study. All participants identified as being overweight or obese with an average age of 40 years old. Race was not considered in this study.

“Mean BMI, both before and after evaluation, was on the higher end of overweight, at 28.7 kg/m2 and 28.6 kg/m2

Blood pressure means were in the normal ranges both before and after the studycompleted.

Mean waist measurements were in the risk for chronic disease category both before and after study results at 98 cm and 94 cm” (Stukenberg & Friess, 2015).

Implications:

There were limitations to this study, with a big factor being the small sample size that completed the 12-week study. The length of study may have been a factor as well, 12-weeks is a short period to make lifestyles changes and see significant results.

Despite the poor response and participation there are benefits of using fitness tracker; “Patient-generated health data and patient self-management is the way of the future” (Stukenberg & Friess, 2015). Using and engaging in patient generated health data shifts the responsibility of health to the client.
