HUMAN BIOLOGY – BIO60

Instructions for Capstone Portfolio Website Project.

Portfolios are often used in art and design to showcase a collection of the artist’s work so that the artist can procure employment or be able to sell her or his art pieces. In this course, you will create a different type of portfolio called a capstone portfolio. Your portfolio will be presented online in a website format and will provide a way for you to actively take responsibility for your learning and construct a set of entries that demonstrates you are accomplishing the measurable outcomes of this course. The capstone portfolio will also give you an opportunity to reflect on your strengths as well as challenges/difficulties that you encounter throughout the course as you learn about human biology.

Instructions for portfolio: Using a website editor of your choice (examples of popular free editors: www.weebly.com,  www.wix.com), create a website that incorporates three major categories: 1) personal learning, 2) human biology concepts, and 3) synthesis of understanding and application. For each of these three major categories, you must discuss ALL OF the following components:

  • PART 1:  Personal learning.
    •
      • Identify and describe your personal AND educational goals for taking this course.  What specific short-term AND long-term goals would you like to set this semester?
      • In order to accomplish your goals so that you can build a strong foundation for your future, what specific things do you think you’ll need to do and what level of effort and time are you willing to extend?
      • What are your expectations for this course?
      • Describe what human biology topic you are most interested in learning about.
    • Discover and discuss your learning style(s).  Start by watching this “Discover Your Learning Style” video:
  •
    • Links to an external site.
      •
        • What are your dominant learning styles?
        • Are the results of both surveys similar?
        • Based on what you know about how you study best, do you agree or disagree with their assessment of your learning styles? Provide examples to illustrate why you agree or disagree.
        • Based on your learning styles, reflect on how you can use this information to strengthen your study habits and enhance your ability to accomplish your goals.
    • Research and explain the concepts of ‘fixed mindset and ‘growth mindset‘, comparing and contrasting the 2 concepts in general terms and then specifically as they might be applied to you!
      •
        • Which type of mindset do you mostly exhibit in your life?  Explain your answer and discuss how this predominant mindset that you exhibit has either helped or hindered you in your own outlook and attitudes about your life.
        • What are the benefits of having a growth mindset? What are the benefits of having a fixed mindset?  Which would you rather have and why?
        • Discuss the picture below that shows how words can change your attitude and mindset.  What does this picture mean to you and how does it specifically apply to your life and attitude?
        • Discuss the following ways to develop a growth mindset.  From this list of 23 ways, select at least three ways and discuss how they specifically apply to your life and attitude.

  • PART 2:   Human biology concepts.Pick an organ system that you are interested in (example: lymphatic system).  This section must address all of the following:
    •
      •
        • Discuss why you selected this system and why you are interested in this system.
        • Explain in detail the characteristics and functions of this system, incorporating specific human biology concepts and knowledge you’ve learned throughout the semester in this course.
    • *** Important: this explanation should reflect a detailed college-level scientific understanding of the topic based on the content of this course.  Do NOT present a short, superficial ‘wikipedia’ explanation! ***
    • ****  It is critical that you provide substantial scientific support (in the form of citations) in this section ****

  • PART 3:   Synthesis of understanding and application.    Select a disease or disorder that interests you.  This section must address all of the following:
    •
      •
        • Explain why you chose this disease/disorder.
        • Present an accurate description of the anatomy and physiology of the organs and organ system that this disease affects. Once again: this presentation should reflect a detailed college-level scientific understanding of the disease or disorder, not just a superficial ‘wikipedia’ explanation!
        • Compare and contrast the anatomy and physiology of the normal healthy condition versus the diseased state from microscopic to gross changes. Be sure to discuss this disease and how it affects all levels of life organization (ie. molecular, cellular, histological, organ, organ system, organismal, societal, etc…).
        • Describe factors or risks (lifestyle, genetic, environmental, etc…) that might lead to this disease.
        • Present the consequences or symptoms — such as: patient outcome, burden of the disease, possible treatments or therapies, and any preventative measure of action that might decrease its risk and occurrence in the general population, etc…
        • Relate this disorder to something outside of class (a news story, a social media story, a personal story, etc…). and reflect on how this condition impacts overall health and wellbeing.
