Training the Supervisory Element week 5 discussion 1

While much of the training focus within law enforcement lies with the officers in the field, many departments are now committing significant time and resources towards effective supervisory and leadership training. In looking at the role of officer versus that of supervisor/manager, categorize the focus and goals of training at each level. Identify the importance and impact of the two (2) areas of training on the community and agency. What impact does liability have on the actions of the supervisor or manager? Provide your opinion on the importance of leadership training and the level of supervision at which you deem it most important to ensure the success of the squad, unit, or division.

The focus and goals of the training focuses on providing a good understanding of the roles, duties and the functions of supervisors and those of field officers.  Training encompasses critical responsibilities such as supervisory roles, styles, measurable performance standards, legal aspects of supervision, marginal or problem employees, instilling discipline, and working under hostile environment.

There are many challenges facing leadership training and supervisory duties for law enforcement supervisors and managers. The training is important in providing the necessary tools for strong leadership within the organizations and communities. This is because the transition from line officers to supervisors for example requires specific mind and skills needed to become an integral part of the management team.

An understanding of risk control is important as state officers are subject to rules and regulations of their departments. The supervisors are therefore subject to administrative liabilities for the violation of such rules and regulations, which may lead to disciplinary actions such as fines, demotions, or dismissal. Civil liabilities include failure to render proper emergency services, failure to help citizens, false arrests, negligence in the care of suspects under custody, constitutional violations, among others (Gaines and Worrall, 2012).

The absence of formal leadership training has made it extremely difficult for law enforcement executives to learn how to lead and develop officers within departments. Effective law enforcement leaders should ensure good staff development and training to their members in dealing with such issues. This call s for managers to provide sets of strategic directions, which differs from the past. The training of leaders is therefore important for the future of the law enforcement agencies.
