Professional mentorship has been identified as an important component of professional engagement, professional growth, and advancement. Consider your own professional journey. Has a mentor shaped your professional advancement? Share a mentor experience from your personal or professional life. What benefits did the experience offer you? How might you mentor other providers seeking to advance in your discipline?

Mentorship is valuable in all types of nursing positions. As a nurse is in the transition of growth and climbs the ladder of leadership responsibility, a mentor who is experienced in management and administrative functions might be of great assistance. A mentor can be key in helping a less experienced nurse assume added responsibilities and position changes. I have experienced a few of the mentors that I have had over the years have also become long lasting friends. The benefits I took away from my experience with my mentors have been to be versatile in this career and always strive to be the best, know your strengths and weaknesses, and always reach out when unsure. Relationships between mentors and mentees vary because of individual characteristics and the career paths and phases of each. During the early phases of a career, a nurse manager is concerned about competence and a mentor can provide valuable coaching.

The Robert Wood Johnson Nurse Executive Fellows program has identified five competencies of mentors. These comprise interpersonal and communication effectiveness, risk taking and creativity, self-knowledge, inspiring and leading change, and strategic vision (RWIF, 2015). Mentors are an important component of a nurturing environment that promotes staff retention. Mentors can provide information about how to improve performance, including feedback on current performance. Mentors provide frequent contact with the mentee and mentee willingness also needs to be a key factor in the success of the mentor/mentee relationship
