Sexting and Obesity Discussion

Q2: The word “sexting” put forward by news reports refers to the erotic picture and text posted on social media. People may fear that teens will be lost in the media environment fulling with pornographic information. What’s worse, teens may not pay more attention to anything other than that pornographic information. However, data from a Pew Internet and American Life study shows that very few teenagers post pornography on the internet (Sternheimer, 2013, p. 80). Ironically, we have only looked at rare cases and concluded that teenage sex is out of control and irresponsible. Meanwhile, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also focused on studying adolescent sexual absurdity while ignoring the same behavior adults do (Sternheimer, 2013, p. 80). Besides, according to the study called “Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System” (YRBSS), the rates of teenage sex, abortion and birthrate have all declined over the past decade. With many teens having sex within a stable relationship, condom use is also increasing year by year (Sternheimer, 2013, p. 81). All these evidence prove that premature sexual behavior of adolescence is not severe as we think. Although media blame the early sexual behavior on popular culture, the reason for the decision to have sex, having a baby or an abortion is a complicated problem for teenagers. However, there is a conventional pattern existing to the teenagers’ mind that men are more likely to claim to have had sex, even if they are lying.

Q3:There seems to be no direct link between popular culture and obesity. However, television, food advertisements, and video games are regarded as a straightforward reason for obesity. People easily associate being sedentary and inactivity, addicted to TV and video games with obesity. Furthermore, food advertisement will stimulate the appetite of children watching TV at home. Sternheimer (2013) points out that television and video games relate to obesity but in no way are they the main reason (p. 105). As we all know, food, especially fast food and snacks, is the main reason for obesity. Thus, the reason why people overeat fast food and snacks is the research direction of the problem. Actually, the main reason is poverty. For one thing, children in poor area will find there is no safer place than home. Parents would rather let their kids stay at home watching TV and eating snacks than play outside. Thus, poor children can quickly gain weight. For another, instead of high-cost dining venues, the affordable fast-food restaurants are everywhere. Children have no choice but to eat fast food which leads to obesity. Moreover, obese children are prone to be lack of self-confidence. They are afraid to communicate with others and stay at home in a fat cycle. Turning off the TV and keeping away from video games seem to be the easiest way to prevent obesity, but it does not solve the problem fundamentally. Poverty alleviation is the most effective solution.
