Step 1: Conducting Research

The goal of your research is to find at least two sources that explain, in detail, a curriculum approach that could be used to guide the cognitive and linguistic development of young children. Find two different early childhood programs that are centered around two different following theories (a web search is fine, and you may choose a center outside of the USA). Develop an understanding of the schools curriculum and how it relates to one of the following:

NAEYC Accreditation – Developmentally Appropriate Practice

Montessori Approach

Head Start Programs

Reggio Emilia Philosophy 

Step 2: Summarize and Evaluate- What seems to be important considerations when planning curriculum according to your sources?

Write a summary of the contents, focusing on curriculum components that foster (or fail to foster) age-appropriate cognitive and language development. Your summary should be focused and brief. Provide just enough information in your summary to set your reader up for your evaluation and analysis.

Evaluate

According to your exploration, consider the following questions:

  • In what ways should curriculum directly foster the language development of young children?
  • In what ways should curriculum address diversity in language development?
  • In what ways should curriculum directly facilitate the development of numerical literacy?
    • Memory?
    • Attention?
    • Problem-solving skills?
    • Imagination?
  • What should curriculum do really well? (describe strengths and support with text)
