  The joys of riding motorcycles offer the freedom from the constraints of four-wheeled

physics and a part of being able to enjoy this particular mode of travel, one must feel confident and safe in the case of an emergency. 

  by deaal4ireal” style=”border-style: none; font-weight: bold; color: rgb(0, 136, 204); float: none; height: auto; width: auto; text-transform: uppercase; background: transparent;”>MOTORCYCLE RIDINGarrow-10x10.png can be fun and safe for everyone if the helmet laws were adopted for all states.  Even without a law, a motorcycle helmet should be a must have before you head out on the highway looking for a day of adventure.  So why do certain states exclude a select few motorcyclists from helmet laws that were adopted to help protect them from head injuries in case of an accident?  Did you know that Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, and New Hampshire, refuse to adopt helmet laws to protect  by deaal4ireal” style=”color: rgb(0, 136, 204); border-style: none !important; font-weight: bold !important; display: inline-block !important; float: none !important; height: auto !important; min-height: 0px !important; min-width: 0px !important; width: auto !important; text-transform: uppercase !important; background: transparent !important;”>DRIVERSarrow-10x10.png and passengers in their state from these types of injuries?  All other states require some or all motorcyclists to wear helmets.

  As the number of motorcycle riders have increased over the last few years, rider injuries and fatalities have grown even more.  In 2012, over 4,900 motorcyclists died on the roads.  That is 15 percent of the total highway fatalities and an increase of 33 percent from 2003-2012.1  Helmets are about 37 percent effective in preventing deaths and about 67 percent effective in preventing brain injuries from motorcycle crashes.2

For those who have experienced or witnessed a head injury from a motorcycle accident, should know first-hand the effect these types of injuries have on family and friends.  Motorcycle crashes are not just measured in loss of human life.  These types of accidents create such large burdens to society, which can consume public funds for emergency responses, emergency room cost, and  by deaal4ireal” style=”border-style: none; font-weight: bold; color: rgb(0, 136, 204); float: none; height: auto; width: auto; text-transform: uppercase; background: transparent;”>INSURANCE PREMIUMSarrow-10x10.png.  The medical cost and long term effects can be most devastating, as head injuries are the most expensive to treat.  The expenses and proper care for a  by deaal4ireal” style=”color: rgb(0, 136, 204); border-style: none !important; font-weight: bold !important; display: inline-block !important; float: none !important; height: auto !important; min-height: 0px !important; min-width: 0px !important; width: auto !important; text-transform: uppercase !important; background: transparent !important;”>PERSONarrow-10x10.png with a serious head injury could easily cost millions of dollars.  Under these circumstances, it would seem entirely reasonable for all states to mandate motorcyclists to wear a helmet, at least to reduce the likelihood of this kind of injury.  These laws would also reduce by deaal4ireal” style=”border-style: none; font-weight: bold; color: rgb(0, 136, 204); float: none; height: auto; width: auto; text-transform: uppercase; background: transparent;”>INSURANCE COMPANYarrow-10x10.png costs, as all riders are required to have but many may not have either  by deaal4ireal” style=”border-style: none; font-weight: bold; color: rgb(0, 136, 204); float: none; height: auto; width: auto; text-transform: uppercase; background: transparent;”>HEALTH INSURANCEarrow-10x10.pngor riders insurance.  

  A few studies provided fatality rates.  However, the  by deaal4ireal” style=”border-style: none; font-weight: bold; color: rgb(0, 136, 204); float: none; height: auto; width: auto; text-transform: uppercase; background: transparent;”>RECOVERYarrow-10x10.png times and potential long term nature of  by deaal4ireal” style=”border-style: none; font-weight: bold; color: rgb(0, 136, 204); float: none; height: auto; width: auto; text-transform: uppercase; background: transparent;”>MOTORCYCLE INJURIESarrow-10x10.png, an important crash outcome for survivors is disability.  Bried et al. found that 12 of their 71 hospital-admitted patients did not return to baseline functioning, while the other 59 fully  by deaal4ireal” style=”border-style: none; font-weight: bold; color: rgb(0, 136, 204); float: none; height: auto; width: auto; text-transform: uppercase; background: transparent;”>RECOVEREDarrow-10x10.png in an average of 23 weeks.3  According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcycle brain injury is three times more likely to happen for motorcyclists without a helmet than for motorcyclists wearing a helmet.3  In severe cases, these injuries can lead to permanent physical, intellectual, emotional, and social disabilities and changes which can make returning to a normal life extremely difficult for the patients and their families.

  Motorcycle ownership is currently at an all-time high, while motorcycle-related deaths and head injuries are expected to remain at these high levels unless effective laws are adopted and enforced.  Helmets are obviously the only safety measure for motorcyclists that have been proven to reduce head injuries and save lives.  The  by deaal4ireal” style=”color: rgb(0, 136, 204); border-style: none !important; font-weight: bold !important; display: inline-block !important; float: none !important; height: auto !important; min-height: 0px !important; min-width: 0px !important; width: auto !important; text-transform: uppercase !important; background: transparent !important;”>MOTORCYCLE HELMETarrow-10x10.png law that covers all motorcycle riders, has been demonstrated to be the best way to ensure helmet use for all riders.

  As  by deaal4ireal” style=”border-style: none; font-weight: bold; color: rgb(0, 136, 204); float: none; height: auto; width: auto; text-transform: uppercase; background: transparent;”>DRIVERSarrow-10x10.png, riders, passengers etc. we all have the opportunity to speak out about the motorcycle helmet law in your state.  We all must make wise conscience decisions when it comes to our safety as well as our health.  We must think about others whos lives and future is affected by the choices we make.  However unless you have been witnessed or have survived a head injury, you wouldn’t know or understand the effect it will have on everyone.  We often talk about the freedom of choice, but when others pay the consequences of that choice, then it’s no longer freedom of choice.
