Lesson 11: Assignment 2

Prewriting: In the lesson discussion, you were asked to do a little pre-planning for this assignment by choosing a childhood experience that you remember well. You should have spent an hour or so in a quiet place writing down all the details you remembered about this experience. (If you haven’t already done so, please do it now!) Make sure you have focused on the sensory data: colors, textures, sounds, smells, and bodily sensations.

Writing, Revising, Editing, and Publishing: Combine the events of your childhood experience with the sensory data you collected in your prewriting. To introduce your subject, you may want to look for a generalization about what was most impressive about the experience, or you may want to describe the setting. Perhaps you will combine the two. After establishing your introductory material, you may go on to narrate the events, spicing the narrative with sensory data. Remember to use Chart 2 and Chart 3 to prepare you final essay. (30 points)

Your instructor will be grading you on these key points:

Did you…

  • present the subject or event in a thesis statement? (2 points)
  • include information about the people and the setting early in the narrative? (4 points)
  • tell the actions in logical order? (4 points)
  • use transitional words (Chart 6)? (3 points)
  • intertwine sensory details throughout the narrative? (10 points)
  • write a concluding paragraph? (3 points)
  • edit according to Chart 2? (2 points)
  • edit according to Chart 3 ? (2 points)
