Lyrical Essay Draft

Using this week’s readings as a guide, compose an essay which argues through structure/style as opposed to directly through content. There is no requirement for including research in this essay (although there is no requirement that you do not include research either). Think about how you feel when you read. Some of that very much comes from the content of what you’re reading—the story, so to speak. But not all of it. Very often we’re intrigued not by what something is, but how it is communicated to us as that. It’s no accident that one of the hallmarks of a lyrical essay is the use of imagery. There’s something different between “a can of soda” and “a hollow, red aluminum tube pumped full of a sodium and syrup cocktail that you can’t escape hearing before anything else; and what you hear sounds like a slow burn fighting with itself.” That difference gets at a different type of truth and that different type of truth is exactly what the Lyrical essay is best at revealing.

Your paper should be two to three pages and double-spaced.
