DIRECTIONS: You will read one exhibition/gallery/museum review from a list provided. They will give their review of the review a snappy title and provide the citation at the top of the post. Citation example, Holland Cotter, “Review: The Smithsonian African American Museum Is Here at Last. And It Uplifts and Upsets,” The New York Times, Sept. 15, 2016. They must hyperlink the citation to the online source.
350-word BLOG POST: First students should identify the author of the review (who are they?) and the venue of publication (what is it? art magazine/popular newspaper?). Students will then outline the critic’s goals and concerns in their review. What is the subject of their review? How do they present their ideas? Does their review connect with you? Do they use language or description to “bring you to the exhibit” or do they use a tone that is particularly persuasive? Is the critic positive or negative? What do you think of their assessment? Are they convincing? Is there anything that you wish they described more closely, or any elements that are confusing? You must include two direct quotations from the review. You must also include at least one image that is referenced in or relates to the content of the review. The image(s) must include a hyperlinked caption: hyperlink plus caption information (Artist, title, date. Medium, dimensions, location, copyright information).
For example: In Nam June Paik’s Electronic Superhighway: Continental U.S., Alaska, Hawaii, 1995, Paik created a fifty-one channel video installation (including one closed-circuit television feed), and utilized custom electronics, neon lighting, steel and wood. The work is approximately 15 x 40 x 4′ and is located at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
