HEALTHCARE ORGANIZATIONS IN SAUDI ARABIA 1

Healthcare Organizations in Saudi Arabia

Introduction

Saudi Arabia’s healthcare system has tremendously developed over the past 20 years, as evidenced by numerous healthcare facilities spread across various parts of the Kingdom. The Kingdom’s ministry of health provides more than 60 percent of healthcare services with the rest shared among government agencies as well as the private sector (Almaki, Fitzgerald & Clark, 2011). According to the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Health (2009) in 1970, the country had 74 healthcare facilities with around 9,000 beds. By 2005, the country had 350 health care facilities with at least 48,000 beds, with the ministry of health operating 62 percent of the hospitals and another 53 percent of the clinics. The government agencies like the ministry healthcare facilities (which comprise of the Saudi Arabian National Guard and the ministry of defence and aviation), ministry of interior and private entities operate the remaining facilities. This paper explores the role of different health organizations in provision of quality health care in Saudi Arabia.

Conclusion

This paper explored the structure of Saudi Arabia’s healthcare system. In particular, it discussed the various health organizations involved in provision of health care services in the country. Clearly, the Ministry of Health plays the leading role in providing health care services through various primary health care services like the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre and the King Saud Medical City. Apart from the Ministry of Health, there are other government agencies that provide health care services. For instance, the Saudi Arabian National Guard owns the King Abdulaziz Medical City, while the Ministry of Interior Security Forces Hospital. The Ministry of Defence and Aviation owns the Prince Sultan Military Medical City. These agencies are independent as they have their budgetary allocations, recruit their own staff and oversee the management as well as administration of their facilities.

Describe what actions the interviewee recommends you take to establish yourself in the profession at the BSN level, specifically as related to your chosen nurse specialty role.

Nursing Leadership Interview:

You will select and interview (in person, face to face) a nursing leader relevant to the designated specialty role of choice (e.g. Nursing Director, Nursing Professor, Nurse Entrepreneur, etc.) that would hire a BSN prepared nurse. Both the  assignment-required questions, as well as critically developed questions of your own creation will be incorporated. Audio-record the interview so that you may progress through the interview in a timely manner and actively participate in the discussion (this is not possible if you are trying to write the conversation down as it occurs). You will need to obtain written permission from this leader (prior to the interview) that the interview may be audio-recorded for your use in writing the interview paper. See interview consent form in Unit 3. The interview should last approximately 30 minutes.

The paper will begin with a brief introduction of the leader being interviewed and will proceed to the questions asked and answers received. The paper will need to conclude with a summative evaluation of the interview process. This information will address such elements as your critical analysis and evaluation of the interview process, information about your current personal professional status and resultant plans for possible professional mentorship within the selected organization. This 2-3 page paper will be written in 6th edition APA format including references. Review how to cite personal communications using APA format. The paper will need to be submitted through the course drop box by the due date.

Leadership Interview Assignment Guide

Present an introduction to the interview conducted, including a brief biography of the interviewee and the organization represented. Explain why this individual was chosen for the interview in light of your selected nursing specialty role.

A Learning Conversation (Level Heading): State each question you posed along with the interviewee’s responses. The questions should include (but NOT be limited to) each topical area delineated below:

a) Determine from the interviewee the mission/vision and goals of the organization

b) Determine what expectations they have for a BSN prepared nurse in your specialty in terms of meeting the organization’s mission

c) Determine what it takes to succeed in the organization

d) Describe what actions the interviewee recommends you take to establish yourself in the profession at the BSN level, specifically as related to your chosen nurse specialty role.

In addition, you are to develop a minimum of 3 additional, relevant questions that serve to further your understanding of critical elements as related to successful specialty role transition within the specific organization.

The conversation should be well organized in terms of categories of questions sharing similar focus and should be presented in such a way as to be helpful to other individuals attempting to transition into new specialty nursing roles within similar types of organizations.

Note: This is learning interview and is NOT a “job interview”, as you are a self-invited guest in interviewing this organizational leader. Questions about such items as salary, benefits, etc. are not appropriate.

Summary (Level Heading): Summarize the key points of the conversation as they relate to your chosen nursing specialty role and successful transition to such a role within the selected organization.

Reflection and Follow-Up: (Level Heading) This section will address such elements as your critical analysis and evaluation of the interview process including (but not limited to) what you would do differently upon reflection, information about your current personal professional status (where you are now in your career) and resultant plans (post interview) for professional mentorship within the selected organization as related to your chosen specialty role and career.

Prepare a short paper on Population Health, history of nursing and how all affects the changing health system and global outlooks.

Content: You will address the topic below:

Prepare a short paper on Population Health, history of nursing and how all affects the changing health system and global outlooks.

Identify the pathophysiology of the disorders presented in each of the three scenarios, including their associated alterations.

Consider the following scenarios:

Scenario 1:

Jennifer is a 2-year-old female who presents with her mother. Mom is concerned because Jennifer has been “running a temperature” for the last 3 days. Mom says that Jennifer is usually healthy and has no significant medical history. She was in her usual state of good health until 3 days ago when she started to get fussy, would not eat her breakfast, and would not sit still for her favorite television cartoon. Since then she has had a fever off and on, anywhere between 101oF and today’s high of 103.2oF. Mom has been giving her ibuprofen, but when the fever went up to 103.2oF today, she felt that she should come in for evaluation. A physical examination reveals a height and weight appropriate 2-year-old female who appears acutely unwell.  Her skin is hot and dry. The tympanic membranes are slightly reddened on the periphery, but otherwise normal in appearance. The throat is erythematous with 4+ tonsils and diffuse exudates. Anterior cervical nodes are readily palpable and clearly tender to touch on the left side. The child indicates that her throat hurts “a lot” and it is painful to swallow. Vital signs reveal a temperature of 102.8oF, a pulse of 128 beats per minute, and a respiratory rate of 24 beats per minute.

Scenario 2:

Jack is a 27-year-old male who presents with redness and irritation of his hands. He reports that he has never had a problem like this before, but about 2 weeks ago he noticed that both his hands seemed to be really red and flaky. He denies any discomfort, stating that sometimes they feel “a little bit hot,” but otherwise they feel fine. He does not understand why they are so red. His wife told him that he might have an allergy and he should get some steroid cream. Jack has no known allergies and no significant medical history except for recurrent ear infections as a child. He denies any traumatic injury or known exposure to irritants. He is a maintenance engineer in a newspaper building and admits that he often works with abrasive solvents and chemicals. Normally he wears protective gloves, but lately they seem to be in short supply so sometimes he does not use them. He has exposed his hands to some of these cleaning fluids, but says that it never hurt and he always washed his hands when he was finished.

Scenario 3:

Martha is a 65-year-old woman who recently retired from her job as an administrative assistant at a local hospital. Her medical history is significant for hypertension, which has been controlled for years with hydrochlorothiazide. She reports that lately she is having a lot of trouble sleeping, she occasionally feels like she has a “racing heartbeat,” and she is losing her appetite. She emphasizes that she is not hungry like she used to be. The only significant change that has occurred lately in her life is that her 87-year-old mother moved into her home a few years ago. Mom had always been healthy, but she fell down a flight of stairs and broke her hip. Her recovery was a difficult one, as she has lost a lot of mobility and independence and needs to rely on her daughter for assistance with activities of daily living. Martha says it is not the retirement she dreamed about, but she is an only child and is happy to care for her mother. Mom wakes up early in the morning, likes to bathe every day, and has always eaten 5 small meals daily. Martha has to put a lot of time into caring for her mother, so it is almost a “blessing” that Martha is sleeping and eating less. She is worried about her own health though and wants to know why, at her age, she suddenly needs less sleep.

To Prepare

Review the three scenarios, as well as Chapter 6 in the Huether and McCance text.

Identify the pathophysiology of the disorders presented in each of the three scenarios, including their associated alterations. Consider the adaptive responses to the alterations.

Review the examples of “Mind Maps—Dementia, Endocarditis, and Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)” media in this week’s Learning Resources. Then select one of the disorders you identified from the scenarios. Use the examples in the media as a guide to construct a mind map for the disorder you selected. Consider the epidemiology, pathophysiology, risk factors, clinical presentation, and diagnosis of the disorder, as well as any adaptive responses to alterations.

  • Review the Application Assignment Rubric found under Course Information

To Complete

Write a 2- to 3-page paper excluding the title page, reference page and Mind Map that addresses the following:

  • For each of the three scenarios explain the pathophysiology, associated alterations and the patients’ adaptive responses to the alterations caused by the disease processes.  You are required to discuss all three scenarios within the paper component of this assignment.
  • Construct one mind map on a selected disorder presented in one of the scenarios. Your Mind Map must include the epidemiology, pathophysiology, risk factors, clinical presentation, and diagnosis of the disorder, as well as any adaptive responses to alterations.

During Week Four, you will be selecting a topic for your persuasive speech and identifying credible sources to help you present your strongest arguments to the audience.

First, let us know what topic are you considering using for your persuasive speech? Why do you think that topic will be an appropriate choice for this audience of undergraduate college students?

Second, list two credible sources relating to your persuasive speech topic. These sources should come from the South University Online Library. Explain why these sources are credible ones (for example, is it an article from a peer-reviewed journal? Is the author a respected authority in this field?)

How do you think we can improve this understanding of the nurse practitioner role?

 How Healthcare reform is impacting primary care https://www.ajmc.com/contributor/sophiabernazzani/2016/03/howhealthcarereformisimpactingprimarycare

•  Healthcare reform 101: What the health is going on in 2018? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwTWhwWLzHQ

•  Healthcare Transformation and Changing Roles for Nursing https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5266427/pdf/ornur3612.pdf

Frequently when the shortage of primary care providers is mentioned with regard to healthcare reform, insurance companies and other institutions forget to factor in the impact nurse practitioners can have on increasing access. How do you think we can improve this understanding of the nurse practitioner role?

Investigate at least two (2) value-added services that Caring Angel Hospital could offer to strengthen its value proposition.

Imagine that you are a senior consultant at Practical Health Care Consulting firm. Your supervisor has instructed you to spend three (3) months at the Caring Angel Hospital to help improve the quality of care, add value to the organization, improve employee morale, design an efficient organizational chart, create a strong team environment, and create the hospital’s competitive advantage. The hospital has traditionally made losses year after year. Furthermore, it is not performing well financially, and the banks are not willing to lend it large sums of money for more effective marketing.

After spending two (2) months within the hospital, you are very happy with your progress, and you think you are capable of acquiring more patient base and expanding the hospital market. However, with a closer look, you notice that your patients are still hopping from one specialized hospital to another in search of various specialized treatments. You also notice that the seats are not comfortable in the waiting area, and the patients continuously show up for appointments on the wrong dates. The nurses and the employees are not smiling during patient conversations, and everyone looks for ways to blame others for failures in the patient treatment process. Everyone seems to work alone and hide what they do from their colleagues.

At the end of the three (3) month period, you must provide a report with your recommended strategies designed to help Caring Angel Hospital achieve its goals. Note: You may create and / or make all necessary assumptions needed for the completion of this assignment.

Write a four to six (4-6) page paper in which you:

From a consulting perspective, propose the major steps that Caring Angel Hospital could take to achieve each of the following goals:

  • Improve the quality of care
  • Add value to the organization
  • Improve employee morale
  • Design an efficient organizational chart
  • Create a strong team environment
  • Create the hospital’s competitive edge.
  • Recommend one (1) approach that the hospital could use for acquiring a larger market share given the prevailing financial circumstances. Justify your recommendation.
  • Investigate at least two (2) value-added services that Caring Angel Hospital could offer to strengthen its value proposition. Provide at least two (2) examples of the advantages of these value-added services to the hospital.
  • Use four (4) recent (within the last five [5] years) quality academic resources in this assignment.
Note: Wikipedia and other websites do not qualify as quality academic resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Propose methodologies that have been proven to increase value in health care delivery systems.
  • Examine leadership and management frameworks that are most applicable to a certain organization type within the health care industry.
  • Assess how politics in a health care organization motivates and demotivates employees, and recommend strategies to mitigate the challenges presented with each aspect.
  • Create a communication strategy to address an ethical dilemma within a health care organization regarding the quality of service and cost.
  • Craft a strategic plan that leads to a competitive advantage within a certain market.
  • Determine best practices for establishing and maintaining strategic alliances within the health care industry or enterprise.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in health care management.
  • Write clearly and concisely about health care management using proper writing mechanics.

Based on your experiences how would you interpret these myths and realities of older adults?

Throughout this course we examined development through the lens of the life-span. For this week we took a closer look at older adults. The perceptions about growing older into older adulthood often do not match the realities of being an older adult. For this assignment, explain some of the myths regarding older adults and some of the realities they often face. Put special emphasis on the social-economic and the physical factors that you have found in your readings and research on this topic. Based on your experiences how would you interpret these myths and realities of older adults? Make sure to justify your answers by citing relevant sources.

Assignment: Asthma and Stepwise Management

Assignment: Asthma and Stepwise Management

Asthma is a respiratory disorder that affects children and adults. Advanced practice nurses often provide treatment to patients with these disorders. Sometimes patients require immediate treatment, making it essential that you recognize and distinguish minor asthma symptoms from serious, life-threatening ones. Since symptoms and attacks are often induced by a trigger, advanced practice nurses must also help patients identify their triggers and recommend appropriate management options. Like many other disorders, there are various approaches to treating and managing care for asthmatic patients depending on individual patient factors.

One method that supports the clinical decision making of drug therapy plans for asthmatic patients is the stepwise approach, which you explore in this Assignment.

                                                   To Prepare

Reflect on drugs used to treat asthmatic patients,      including long-term control and quick relief treatment options for      patients. Think about the impact these drugs might have on patients,      including adults and children.

Consider how you might apply the stepwise approach to      address the health needs of a patient in your practice.

Reflect on how stepwise management assists health care      providers and patients in gaining and maintaining control of the disease.

Create a 5- to 6-slide PowerPoint presentation that can be used in a staff development meeting on presenting different approaches for implementing the stepwise approach for asthma treatment. Be sure to address the following:

Describe long-term control and quick relief treatment      options for the asthma patient from your practice as well as the impact      these drugs might have on your patient.

Explain the stepwise approach to asthma treatment and      management for your patient.

Explain how stepwise management assists health care      providers and patients in gaining and maintaining control of the disease.      Be specific.

The first step of the evidence-based practice process is to evaluate a nursing practice environment to identify a nursing problem in the clinical area.

The first step of the evidence-based practice process is to evaluate a nursing practice environment to identify a nursing problem in the clinical area. When a nursing problem is discovered, the nurse researcher develops a clinical guiding question to address that nursing practice problem.

For this assignment, you will create a clinical guiding question know as a PICOT question. The PICOT question must be relevant to a nursing practice problem. To support your PICOT question, identify six supporting peer-revised research articles, as indicated below. The PICOT question and six peer-reviewed research articles you choose will be utilized for subsequent assignments.

Use the “Literature Evaluation Table” to complete this assignment.

  1. Select a nursing practice problem of interest to use as the focus of your research. Start with the patient population and identify a clinical problem or issue that arises from the patient population. In 200–250 words, provide a summary of the clinical issue.
  2. Following the PICOT format, write a PICOT question in your selected nursing practice problem area of interest. The PICOT question should be applicable to your proposed capstone project (the project students must complete during their final course in the RN-BSN program of study).
  3. The PICOT question will provide a framework for your capstone project.
  4. Conduct a literature search to locate six research articles focused on your selected nursing practice problem of interest. This literature search should include three quantitative and three qualitative peer-reviewed research articles to support your nursing practice problem.

Note: To assist in your search, remove the words qualitative and quantitative and include words that narrow or broaden your main topic. For example: Search for diabetes and pediatric and dialysis. To determine what research design was used in the articles the search produced, review the abstract and the methods section of the article. The author will provide a description of data collection using qualitative or quantitative methods. Systematic Reviews, Literature Reviews, and Metanalysis articles are good resources and provide a strong level of evidence but are not considered primary research articles.  Therefore, they should not be included in this assignment.

While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines

Instructions:

This is a group assignment. During Week 1, you will self-select and self-enroll to groups (3 persons/group). If enrollment numbers/changes require a different number, please coordinate with faculty. Faculty will assign your group a case study and data; this is what you will work with the remainder of the course to create your final QI report. Please find your case study and data, along with other project resources in “QI Project Resources: (button found on L-hand side of course site). The case study will prompt you to consider best practices regarding a particular clinical problem (e.g., preventing/reducing falls). Please note how Discussion board topics Weeks 2-4 prompt you to individually complete several portions of this project. Use the individual work done in these discussions and the opportunity to see others’ work and receive feedback to refine your group’s work on the final QI report.

You and your group mates are responsible for 1) initiating contact with each other, 2) exchanging contact information, 3) creating a timeline for assignment completion, 4) determining collaborative tools you’d like to use to complete the assignment (e.g., Google Docs), 5) identifying and assigning group roles and distributing work load evenly, and 6) maintaining effective communication with each other (e.g., conflict prevention and resolution, timely and frequent communication, etc.). Collaborative resources are available to assist you, under “Course Support” (L-hand side of course site).

Using your assigned project (i.e., case study/data), components of the final written report must include:

Background of the problem

  • Depth and breadth of the problem (e.g., national statistics and local data to demonstrate a problem exists)
  • Definition of the problem with references
  • PICO question

Evidence

  • What evidence did you find? Synthesize the evidence
  • Appraisal of the evidence using the JBI appraisal tools (include as appendix)
  • Levels of evidence

Analysis of Current Condition

  • Narrative and table, graph, flow chart of current condition (data from assigned problem)
  • Include missed opportunities (examination of current process versus what the evidence says should be done using a flowchart); these are your indicators.

Cause Analysis

  • Root Cause Analysis and Fishbone Diagram. Identify where the problems exist that you will address.

Action Plan for Each Indicator

  • What the evidence says should be done. The changes that should occur in order to improve practice, to include:
    • Indicator (look at your indicator sheet): Provide the evidence to support in one sentence.
    • Measurement: Numerator and denominator. How will you measure that the change is being done?
    • Goal: What is your goal data? Benchmarks?
  • Implementation:  Include Best Practices for implementing your change and evidence to support your implementation strategy
  • Create a table with the following information for each indicator:
    • Who (is responsible)?–>Describe who is responsible
    • What (are they responsible for?)–>Explain what they are responsible for completing (each indicator described above)
    • Why (did you select this person?)–>Rationale for why this person should be responsible for this action
    • When (will they perform the action?)–>What is the timeline for completing the task?
    • How (will they complete the action?)–>Explain how the person should complete the action (think of implementation described above)
    • Completion Date–>Date for completing the action

RCA(Root Cause Analysis):

1- There is only one WSCN for entire facility to provide wound care.

2– The WSCN only provides care on Monday-Friday from 8am-7pm.

3-The WSCN has no speciality certification or master’s degree in wound care.

4- Patients are only assessed once per shift, which should be assessed during every shift.

5-  Nurses on the floor don’t have skills and proper training or education on assessment and treatment of pressure ulcers.

6- There is no clear path or protocol in wound care within the facility.

7- Lack of effective communication between nurses for patients who need wound care in case for any technical issue it doesn’t appear in generated computer list.

PICO question:

For hospitalized patients with restricted movement, does the use of I.S.K.I.N bundles reduce the future rate of HAPU compared to the current hospital regulations?

Best Available Evidence Action Plan
-Frequent position changes (at least every two hours)

-Avoid friction and shear when repositioning.

-When repositioning, use proper technique.

-Implement pressure relieving mattresses or surfaces.

-Avoid turning patient on an area that is already reddened related to pressure.

-For pressure ulcer prevention, do not rub or massage area.

-Emollients can be used to hydrate the skin.

-Barrier creams to protect skin from increased moisture.

-Frequent skin assessments per protocol.

-Nutritional risk assessments with interventions.

-Additional protein supplements in additional to their regular diet  Alderden et al (2011) list the following best practices in preventing HAPU’s.

Project 1: Hospital-acquired Pressure Ulcer

Our HAPU rates on Unit A have risen significantly over the past 6 months. We have a Wound and Skin Care Nurse (WSCN) who has training in wound care. This nurse does not have a Master’s degree or specialty certification in this area but does have a lot of experience. The Wound and Skin Care Nurse is scheduled to work from Monday through Friday, 8a-5p. The WSCN nurse visits every unit and asks about each of our patients. If we identify someone as having a red spot or a potential area of breakdown, we let her know during her rounds.

The WSCN visits patients daily if they are on a computer-generated list of patients at risk for skin breakdown. The list is created when a box is checked in the computerized charting skin assessment area that asks if the patient is on bed rest or is unable to move independently. If a ‘yes’ is checked then the patient’s name is automatically placed on the list. In addition, the computerized Braden Scale is added to the patient’s documentation. The WSCN downloads the list every morning. If someone is identified at risk during the day shift the WSCN does not know about it until the next day.

The WSCN spends a lot of time on our unit. We sometimes have a problem when a patient needs to be seen by the WSCN but do not appear on the list. The nurses do not see the list, only the WSCN nurse. Our current process is to perform the Braden Scale upon initial admission assessment, then once a day if the patient is noted to be at risk, usually during the midnight shifts. The information is entered into the electronic chart (documentation system). We can track the patients’ progress and see what treatments are given to the patient. For the most part, the WSCN does all the treatments unless we are given specific instructions about an individual patient. We are not aware of what evidence supports any of the treatments. Because we have a WSCN, the direct care nurses are not familiar with how to care for the patient with skin breakdown unless the WSCN provides specific directions. We need to know what the best practices are for caring for a patient with a HAPU, including nurse driven care versus what the WSCN does for the patient.

Summarize the difference between academic and non-academic sources of nursing knowledge

APA format 1 page long 3 references and please include one from discussion post

MSN degree Need ASAP for 9/7/19.

Audience

First-year nursing students come in an associate degree nursing program have typical prerequisite coursework, yet often come with a high degree of variable life experiences. Nursing students, in general, are academic achievers who could not be admitted to their program without a high grade point average. Prerequisite coursework, such as anatomy and physiology, resides at the knowledge and comprehension level of Bloom’s taxonomy, which requires students to explain, memorize, and describe concepts (Bristol & Kerwekh, 2011).  Early nursing coursework begins to include application and analysis where students must criticize, compare, and develop ideas. For many, this is a big leap. Bradshaw and Hultquist (2017) describe that students’ progress through learning via set steps. The first step is dualistic thinking where concepts are black and white. This progresses to multiplicity, where more diverse ideas are tolerated. Nursing students also experience a difficult transition to understanding the conceptual grey areas.

Learning Need

Early in the nursing program, students are expected to identify scholarly versus non-scholarly sources of information. Students are expected to include scholarly sources in their self-directed learning and include these in their assignments. Being able to evaluate evidence is critical for patient safety as they advance in their training and career (Horntvedt, Nordsteien, Fermann, & Severinsson, 2018).  The following are two learning objectives for this lesson:

  • Summarize the difference between academic and non-academic sources of nursing knowledge
  • Provide two examples of academic sources of knowledge

Horntvedt et al. (2018) found that interactive teaching and integration into clinical practice were effective strategies for teaching students to evaluate evidence.  The learning activity will provide necessary information about scholarly sources of information in an online format. This lesson will use a video presentation to highlight critical concepts related to assessing academic sources of information. During the lesson, students will be shown five different sources of information and be asked to rank the sources in order of most reliable to least reliable.

Evaluation

Shank (2005) emphasizes the need to match the skill level of the learner with the learning objectives and activities. For first-year nursing students, a basic understanding of scholarly versus non-scholarly work is appropriate. An analysis of formal research study validity is beyond the scope of what is needed at their level. The verb summarize corresponds with the knowledge level of learning in Bloom’s taxonomy. The second objective asks the student to provide two examples, which demonstrates comprehension-level understanding in Bloom’s. Both objectives, if successfully met, will allow the student to complete the required work, accessing scholarly work, successfully.

First peer: The goals proposed were to reduce homicides, fire-arm related, bullying, child mistreatment, sexual violence, violence from coworkers, psychological abuse, self-harm, and the exposure of children to violence. I appreciate that considerable goals and thought were placed on those, other than the victim, affected by violence. Most often cycles of violence are perpetrated by intergeneration violence. That which was observed by children mimicked and displayed to their own children when they grow up. With children having greater access to violent movies, games, and television, violence is often downplayed and normalized amongst families and communities. Perpetuated violence escalates in their personal and professional lives. The most important goal in determining the effects of violence is an improvement in the reporting and coding of violence for unified measurement and tracking.

second peer: The goals identified by Healthy People 2020 that are related to reducing violence is progressed to achieve these objectives can save thousands of lives, reduce the suffering of victims and their families, and decrease the financial cost to the law enforcement and healthcare systems. The role that nurses can and do play in violence prevention is critical and extends beyond just caring for victims to also include preventing violence before it happens. Bullying can have serious health, physical, and psychological effects on the student who bullies, the student who is bullied, or the student who both bullies and is bullied. School nurses can educate students and staff and advocate for student support. Also, include examining school rules and using behavior management techniques and social-emotional learning in the classroom and throughout the school to detect and provide consequences for bullying.

NR 503 WEEK 2 ASSIGNMENT – HEALTHY PEOPLE 2020

P.S. Track is family nurse practitioner. Please use Florida as example (see bellow)

Purpose

The concepts of epidemiology provide the framework for the study of infectious and chronic health issues/diseases, which provides a rich source of data for the analysis of trends in disease and health. This assignment will offer the opportunity to explore the population health effects associated with falls.  You will identify populations at risk for falls, for instance those with co-morbidities or the frail living at home, and design a population focused educational intervention for your target population.  In addition, you will look at what outcomes will be addressed to determine if your interventions are effective.  This paper should integrate HP2020 and CDC information into your paper.

Activity Learning Outcomes

Through this assignment, the student will demonstrate the ability to:

1. Identify appropriate outcome measures and study designs applicable to epidemiological subfields such as infectious disease, chronic disease, environmental exposures, reproductive health, and genetics. (CO3)

2. Identify important sources of epidemiological data. (CO6)

Students are expected to submit assignments by the time they are due. Assignments submitted after the due date and time will receive a deduction of 10% of the total points possible for that assignment for each day the assignment is late. Assignments will be accepted, with penalty as described, up to a maximum of three days late, after which point a zero will be recorded for the assignment. Quizzes and discussions are not considered assignments and are not part of the late assignment policy.

Total Points Possible: 125 Points

Requirements

1. Research Topic: Falls

2. Identify your target population (for instance, age or other demographic, aggregate population); this must be in your city or state (FLORIDA).

3. Discuss population-based health education interventions for your target population that is aimed at reducing morbidity and mortality for the problem. Be sure to review the research literature and HP2020 for interventions.

Mrs. E. is 69 years old and was admitted for extremely high blood pressure which caused her to be dizzy and fall at home. She sprained her wrist and had multiple bruises and complained of some chest pain. She is a widow and lives with her two dogs. Her children live in the next state and try to visit her often. She does have one sister and brother-in-law who live in the same city. Mrs. E. has been relatively healthy during her life but since her husband passed away from a massive heart attack last year she has not been as active as she had been. She also has found it difficult to make meals only for herself. As a result, she has lost 15 pounds in the last year, she was already quite thin. Mrs. E. is a devout Christian and was born in India and emigrated to the United States when she was married due to her husband’s profession. She misses her husband and her children and does not like to visit her doctor hence the untreated hypertension. During her hospital stay amlodipine 2.5 mg/day was prescribed.

What compelling right does this case address?

Assignment:

  • Mrs. R., an 87- year- old patient, has a past history that includes coronary artery disease, a previous stroke, and advanced Alzheimer’s disease. Ten days ago, Mrs. R. was hospitalized for aspiration pneumonia and has been ventilator dependent since being admitted to the intensive care unit in a small rural hospital. Family members visit daily and have repeatedly voiced their concern to the nursing staff about the continued ventilator support that Mrs. R. is receiving, most notably the fact that Mrs. R. would never have wanted such care. They also note that Mrs. R. has not recognized them in past months and that they plan to visit less in future days, but can be contacted should any change in Mrs. R.’ s condition occur. Her primary physician has practiced in this community for multiple years; he is well known for his reluctance to discontinue any type of life support for any patient. When questioned, Dr. G.’ s consistent response is, if this were his frail 92- year- old mother, he would prescribe the very same treatment for her. Dr. G. has now requested that the nurses talk to the family about moving Mrs. R. to a major medical center, where she can receive more advanced care, including vigorous rehabilitation and physical therapy, so that she may eventually return to a long- term nursing care facility. How might the nurses in this scenario respond to the physician’s request? How would this scenario begin to cause moral distress among the nursing staff, and what are the positive actions that the nurses might begin to take to prevent moral distress?
  • Read Exercise 4.1 (Guido, p. 44) and apply the MORAL model to resolve the dilemma.
  • Read the case study presented at the end of Chapter 3. Examine the above scenario from the perspective of health care policy. How would you begin to evaluate the need for the policy and the possible support or lack of support for the policy from your peers, nursing management, and others who might be affected by the policy? Do the 10 questions outlined by Malone (as listed in Guido, p. 50) assist in this process? Draft a proposed policy to address the issue you have identified.
    • What compelling right does this case address?
    • Whose rights should take precedence?
    • Does a child (here, a competent 14-year old) have the right to determine what will happen to him? Should he ethically have this right?
    • How would you have decided the outcome if his disease state had not intervened?

Demonstrate understanding of the content presented in the articles.

This week, you will write a mini-systematic literature review. It is mini because you will only be reviewing two sources.
For this literature review assignment, we are going to give you a choice of three topics to choose from. Choose one for this assignment.

  1. Myasthenia Gravis
  2. Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
  3. HIV/AIDS

Remember, for a systematic review, focus your analysis on the treatments, causes, diagnosis, and prognosis presented in the literature.
Next, conduct your research of scholarly articles. Use the WCU Online Library databases. You will need to choose two sources to include in this mini-literature review.
For this review, be sure to:

  • Select two relevant and appropriate scholarly articles that address the topic you chose.
  • Present a thorough literature review of both articles by summarizing, synthesizing, and evaluating the materials.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the content presented in the articles.
  • Include a critical assessment of the sources. Do not simply include a summary of what you have read.
  • Incorporate citations into your body paragraphs; incorporate the essential and most relevant supporting evidence eloquently and appropriately.
  • Present your writing in a clear, organized manner.
  • Provide a strong introduction and conclusion, including further questions for research.
  • Use proper APA format with proper citations. Review APA Citations Here

Your literature review should be 1–2 pages in length. Remember, you will need to use APA formatting in your literature review and include a title page and a reference page.

Reference an article about the clinical issue or situation

Key words that you must understand: defining attributes, concept, antecedents

  1. *Identify a specific clinical issue or situation in your current nursing practice area (decide on the concept in this situation) that you would either like to see changed or want to study. Depending on your practice area, this could be a patient issue or problem or it could be a healthcare system issue or situation. Here is an example: [ During my work as a nurse practitioner some of my asthmatic patients made frequent visits. I found that these were the patients who did not take their maintenance medications. They experienced frequent bouts of  bronchitis and missed many days of work and school].
  2. Think about the concept in the situation but do not provide it since your peers will try to see if they have the correct one. In this case, the concept I am thinking of is adherence to medications, but you may think of the following: health maintenance, or chronic illnesses. You will not post the concept that you are thinking of.
  3. A detailed, objective narrative of this issue or clinical situation should be provided so that the readers (instructor and peers) can picture themselves in the situation and are able to identify the concept.
  4. Do not draw conclusions or try to solve the situation in this narrative.

How would you apply the ten steps to resolving an interest-based conflict (Quantum Leadership, pp. 250-253) to address this problem?

A new healthcare manager put some changes into place that would facilitate staff involvement in decisions related to patient care. One of these changes included transitioning to staff self-scheduling, with a few rules that the staff helped develop. One of the rules included that the more senior staff members would have first choice in their schedule. This new schedule process was well received until the holiday schedule started to be created. Negotiation and the importance of supporting each other to ensure everyone had some time with their family over the holidays was not prioritized, unlike in years past. A staff divide developed between the senior and less senior staff members. Senior members would give the less senior members the silent treatment and became noticeably less available to help the less senior members throughout their shifts. The conflict resulted in one staff member leaving work in tears and several others desiring to change floors or leave the hospital completely.

In your submission, respond to the following: Summarize the key problem outlined in the case study. How would you apply the ten steps to resolving an interest-based conflict (Quantum Leadership, pp. 250-253) to address this problem?

Select two of the following patient factors: genetics, gender, ethnicity, age, or behavior.

The neurological system affects all parts and functions of the body through nerve stimulation. Nerves also control the sensation and perception of pain. While pain can be described in a variety of ways, it is essentially labeled according to its duration and source. As an advanced practice nurse evaluating a patient, you need to consider the following questions: Does the pain quickly come and go, or is it persistent and ongoing? Does the pain arise at the source of injury or in another location? In this Discussion, you compare three common types of pain—acute, chronic, and referred.

To Prepare

· Review this week’s media presentation on the neurological system, as well as Chapter 14 in the Huether and McCance text.

· Identify the pathophysiology of acute, chronic, and referred pain. Consider the similarities and differences between these three types of pain.

· Select two of the following patient factors: genetics, gender, ethnicity, age, or behavior. Reflect on how the factors you selected might impact the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and prescription of treatment for acute, chronic, and referred pain.

Discussion Post:

Post a description of the pathophysiology of acute, chronic, and referred pain, including similarities and differences between them. Then, explain how the factors you selected might impact the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and prescription of treatment for acute, chronic, and referred pain.

Carrying out such an assessment for the community will help in the identification of the available community resources and how those services can be accessed for the benefit of the patient.

Me    6 posts   Re: Topic 4 DQ 1  I agree with you that the first step to bringing about change in the community is to know the community. One should acknowledge and understand the need for such change. It is usually very tempting to see that something needs fixing and quickly jump into a solution. One should resist this temptation and instead take the time to study the community to get a clear understanding of all the needed change.I, further, agree with you that understanding the healthcare system at the local level involves important questions such as those you mentioned. One needs to understand the services offered in the community so that they can be effective while implementing evidence-based practice. To implement the right change in the community, it is important for the healthcare professionals to put their biases aside and talk to the people on the ground, to get a good understanding of what matters most to the citizens. In the long run, this prevents the implementation of underused EBP initiatives (Saunders & Vehviläinen-Julkunen, 2018). Carrying out such an assessment for the community will help in the identification of the available community resources and how those services can be accessed for the benefit of the patient.I also agree with the insights of your mentor about the importance of focusing on lead education especially in this day and age. I think than this is an area that has not received a lot of attention and tends to be ignored yet it is very important especially for community health. Basing your research in this field will add to the exiting limited knowledge hence contribute to the future body of research. Generally, I find your post to be very informative. All the best.  References  Saunders, H., & Vehviläinen-Julkunen, K. (2018). Review the scenario provided, as well as Chapter 25 in the Huether and McCance text. Consider how you would diagnose and prescribe treatment for the patient.

At least once a year, the media report on a seemingly healthy teenage athlete collapsing during a sports game and dying of heart complications. These incidents continue to outline the importance of physical exams and health screenings for teenagers, especially those who play sports. During these health screenings, examiners check for cardiovascular alterations such as heart murmurs because they can be a sign of an underlying heart disorder. Since many heart alterations rarely have symptoms, they are easy to miss if health professionals are not specifically looking for them. Once cardiovascular alterations are identified in patients, it is important to refer them to specialists who can further investigate the cause.

Consider the following scenario:

A 16-year-old male presents for a sports participation examination. He has no significant medical history and no family history suggestive of risk for premature cardiac death. The patient is examined while sitting slightly recumbent on the exam table and the advanced practice nurse appreciates a grade II/VI systolic murmur heard loudest at the apex of the heart. Other physical findings are within normal limits, the patient denies any cardiovascular symptoms, and a neuromuscular examination is within normal limits. He is cleared with no activity restriction. Later in the season he collapses on the field and dies.

To Prepare

  • Review the scenario provided, as well as Chapter 25 in the Huether and McCance text. Consider how you would diagnose and prescribe treatment for the patient.
  • Select one of the following patient factors: genetics, ethnicity, or behavior. Reflect on how the factor you selected might impact diagnosis and prescription of treatment for the patient in the scenario.

Write a description of how you would diagnose and prescribe treatment for the patient in the scenario. Then explain how the factor you selected might impact the diagnosis and prescription of treatment for that patient.

Discussion: Interaction Between Nurse Informaticists and Other Specialists

Nature offers many examples of specialization and collaboration. Ant colonies and bee hives are but two examples of nature’s sophisticated organizations. Each thrives because their members specialize by tasks, divide labor, and collaborate to ensure food, safety, and general well-being of the colony or hive.

Of course, humans don’t fare too badly in this regard either. And healthcare is a great example. As specialists in the collection, access, and application of data, nurse informaticists collaborate with specialists on a regular basis to ensure that appropriate data is available to make decisions and take actions to ensure the general well-being of patients.

In this Discussion, you will reflect on your own observations of and/or experiences with informaticist collaboration. You will also propose strategies for how these collaborative experiences might be improved.

To Prepare:

· Review the Resources and reflect on the evolution of nursing informatics from a science to a nursing specialty.

· Consider your experiences with nurse Informaticists or technology specialists within your healthcare organization.

By Day 3 of Week 3

Post a description of experiences or observations about how nurse informaticists and/or data or technology specialists interact with other professionals within your healthcare organization. Suggest at least one strategy on how these interactions might be improved. Be specific and provide examples. Then, explain the impact you believe the continued evolution of nursing informatics as a specialty and/or the continued emergence of new technologies might have on professional interactions.

Post a description of the pathophysiology of acute, chronic, and referred pain, including similarities and differences between them.

Discussion: Pain

Post a description of the pathophysiology of acute, chronic, and referred pain, including similarities and differences between them.

Then, explain how GENDER & AGE might impact the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and prescription of treatment for acute, chronic, and referred pain.

Include in-text citations and at least 3 references.

Case Study, Chapter 3, Developing Effective Leaders to Meet 21st-Century Health Care Challenges

An experienced registered professional nurse has just been promoted as the nurse manager of a nursing unit. The nurse had been a very effective leader on the unit prior to the promotion of becoming the nurse manager. The new nurse manager is making a list of essential characteristic of effective leaders.

1. What are factors that are driving the need for innovative and transformational leaders in health care for the 21st century?

2. What are essential characteristics of an effective leader that the new nurse manager needs to incorporate into the nursing unit culture?

3. The nurse manager is reviewing the strengths and weaknesses of three leadership models: transactional, transformational, and complexity. What are the essential characteristics of the three leadership models? Which model do you think is most effective to use in leading a nursing unit? Why?

Review the Resources and identify a clinical issue of interest that can form the basis of a clinical inquiry.

Your quest to purchase a new car begins with an identification of the factors important to you. As you conduct a search of cars that rate high on those factors, you collect evidence and try to understand the extent of that evidence. A report that suggests a certain make and model of automobile has high mileage is encouraging. But who produced that report? How valid is it? How was the data collected, and what was the sample size?

In this Assignment, you will delve deeper into clinical inquiry by closely examining your PICO(T) question. You also begin to analyze the evidence you have collected.

To Prepare:

  • Review the Resources and identify a clinical issue of interest that can form the basis of a clinical inquiry.
  • Develop a PICO(T) question to address the clinical issue of interest for the Assignment.

A small community hospital in the Midwest has used a homegrown information system for years. The system began in the early 1970s with a financial module. Over time, additional modules were added. A limited number of departments selected a commercial system and interfaces were used to integrate these into the overall functionality of the hospital information system. Except for physicians, most in-house clinical or care-related documentation is online. However, about 15% to 20% of this documentation is done by free text and is not effectively searchable. In addition, the screens, including the drop-down and default values, were built using terms selected by the in-house development team in consultation with clinical staff; thus there is no data dictionary or specific standard language. In the last few years, the hospital has purchased two outpatient clinics (obstetrics and mental health) and a number of local doctor practices. The clinics and doctors’ offices are now being converted to the hospital administrative systems. A few of the clinical applications that are tied directly to the administrative systems such as order entry and results reporting are also being installed.

A major change is being planned. A new chief information officer (CIO) was hired last year and she has appointed a chief medical information officer (CMIO) and a chief nursing information officer (CNIO). No other significant staff changes were made. With her team in place, one of the CIO’s first activities was to complete an inventory of all applications. Rather than continue to build, a decision was made to switch to a commercial vendor and the hospital selected a commercial system.

As a member of the clinical staff with informatics education, the CIO has requested that you develop a training and information presentation for the clinical staff that will:

· Identify two or more issues with the existing system

· Provide staff with appropriate “work-around” for using the existing system

· Provide an overview of two of the standard languages used within the new system including discipline or specialty, updating frequency, and available cross-maps

· One standard language should pertain only to nursing

· One standard language should be multidisciplinary.

· Obtain clinical staff input, using a five-question survey, of specific methods to support transition to the new system; questions should be open-ended.

Post an explanation for how you think the cost-benefit analysis in the statement from page 27 of Feldstein (2006) affected efforts to repeal/replace the ACA.

Regardless of political affiliation, individuals often grow concerned when considering perceived competing interests of government and their impact on topics of interest to them. The realm of healthcare is no different. Some people feel that local, state, and federal policies and legislation can be either helped or hindered by interests other than the benefit to society.

The suppliers of legislative benefits are legislators, and their primary goal is to be re-elected. Thus, legislators need to maximize their chances for re-election, which requires political support. Legislators are assumed to be rational and to make cost-benefit calculations when faced with demands for legislation. However, the legislator’s cost-benefit calculations are not the cost-benefits to society of enacting particular legislation. Instead, the benefits are the additional political support the legislator would receive from supporting legislation and the lost political support they would incur as a result of their action. When the benefit to legislators (positive political support) exceeds their costs (negative political support) they will support legislation. (page 27)

WHAT’S YOUR LEADERSHIP SIGNATURE?

12/12/2015

Karen Rosa West, PhD

TAGS: + Leadership Assessment + CEO Focus + Talent Strategy & Management

Why do some business leaders thrive while others flounder? Professional qualifications and technical competencies (the whats of leadership) play an important role, of course, but far more often we’ve observed that success or failure depends on how leaders lead — specifically, how leaders’ styles mesh with their teams and the cultures of their organizations.

An empirical research project we conducted to better understand these dynamics, and the behavioral patterns that underpin them, identified eight leadership styles, or archetypes. Taken together, they suggest implications for senior executives looking to better understand — and improve — their leadership skills, for teams seeking to improve their dynamics, and for organizations striving to improve the overall effectiveness of their leaders.

To learn more about the leadership styles, and to take a brief assessment, see our article in Harvard Business Review. The assessment provides immediate feedback about your style — potential strengths, weaknesses, and blind spots — and pinpoints the settings where you’ll be most and least effective.

What we did

To better understand how leaders lead and what contributes to effective leadership, we created a psychometric survey to measure three interrelated facets of leadership that our experience suggests are important differentiators. Specifically, we wanted to see to what degree leaders possessed 1) a “thriving mind-set”[1] (including a clear sense of purpose, deep commitment to learning, and conveyed sense of optimism); 2) a combination of social, self, and situational awareness; and 3) essential leadership values such as a performance orientation, ethical integrity, ability to collaborate, and openness to change, among others.

The survey included 1,006 largely US-based executives of director level and above at companies with 250 or more employees. The respondents represented a broad range of industries and functions. Importantly, our survey questions were designed to highlight the ambiguity and fluidity of the kinds of real-life situations that senior executives face. We did this by asking respondents to rate themselves on a continuum between sets of opposing, yet equally “right,” choices (for example, “I prefer a changing environment” versus “I prefer a stable environment,” or “I love to win” versus “I hate to lose”). Factor analysis allowed us to isolate the dozen or so survey questions (from the original 72) that together accounted for the vast majority of the variance we observed in the responses.

What we learned

When we looked at the patterns in the data and conducted further statistical analyses on them, including cluster analysis, we discovered something interesting: eight statistically distinct leadership styles distributed among respondents. Moreover, while the characteristics of each signature style, or archetype, were quantitatively unique, they also resonated deeply with our own experience of conducting executive assessments. In short, we all know leaders like these — and the strengths and weaknesses they exhibit are at once intuitively recognizable and instructive.

The eight archetypes of leadership:

Collaborator: Empathetic, team-building, talent-spotting, coaching oriented

Energizer: Charismatic, inspiring, connects emotionally, provides meaning

Pilot: Strategic, visionary, adroit at managing complexity, open to input, team oriented

Provider: Action oriented, confident in their path or methodology, loyal to colleagues, driven to provide for others

Harmonizer: Reliable, quality-driven, execution focused, creates positive and stable environments, inspires loyalty

Forecaster: Learning oriented, deeply knowledgeable, visionary, cautious in decision making

Producer: Task focused, results oriented, linear thinker, loyal to tradition

Composer: Independent, creative, problem solving, decisive, self-reliant

To learn more about the leadership styles, and to take a brief assessment, see our article in Harvard Business Review. The assessment provides immediate feedback about your style — potential strengths, weaknesses, and blind spots — and pinpoints the settings where you’ll be most and least effective.

What it means for leaders

It’s important to note that there is no such thing as a “right” or “wrong” leadership style, and in fact individuals are likely to have access to every style to a varying degree. That said, our experience and this research both suggest that leaders are likely to gravitate to a much smaller set of default styles they find comfortable or familiar — and particularly so when they are under stress or aren’t consciously managing the impressions they leave on others.

What might this mean for leaders? For senior executives, recognizing their “go-to” style or styles could help them better understand and articulate the focus of their leadership (be it relationships, ideas, problem solving, execution, and so on) and thus better play to their strengths when leading teams or operating in complex environments. Moreover, it can help individuals understand the other leadership styles to which they have access, thus potentially broadening the range of situations and environments where they might be successful.

It could also help leaders recognize potential pitfalls and areas for heightened vigilance. For example, a “collaborator” whose empathetic, consensus-driven style is a strength when interacting with his or her C-suite peers could find it ineffective (or even counterproductive) when interacting with subordinates who crave clarity and direction. Similarly, a learning-oriented “forecaster” who uses his or her ability to gather information and think conceptually to help generate great ideas may not consider formulating a deeper buy-in strategy that appeals to people’s hearts as well as their heads.

Similarly, a better understanding of the archetypes and how they interact with one another could help inform the talent management approaches taken by companies, including:

Understanding how leaders are likely to react to and deal with ambiguity

Identifying situations and contexts in which up-and-coming leaders are likely to be most successful and where they may find their leadership skills stretched

Seeking to understand — and balance — team leadership dynamics in order to align leadership styles with organizational objectives (for example, leading a change initiative)

While our research into these leadership archetypes is in its early stages, some things are already quite clear. Human motivations and behaviors are complex, and therefore any model attempting to explain them (including this one) will always have limited power as a predictive tool. Moreover, change is constant as leaders evolve throughout their careers and accumulate experience. Nonetheless, by developing an enhanced understanding of how leaders behave and interact with one another, we might better seek to harness that ability to change in service of expanding leadership potential.

Assessment: What’s Your Leadership Style?

Your go-to leadership style: PROVIDER

You are motivated by two different yet equally strong desires: to lead from the front and to take care of people around you. You are confident in your abilities, deeply loyal and committed to your colleagues, and filled with a sense of conviction — all characteristics that may be very appealing to followers. You are also likely to believe that your approach is the right one, and you are highly motivated to share it with those you are close to so that they will succeed. But your conviction can also lead to insular thinking, and others may find you intellectually distant or overly focused on your own perspective. Your team may see you as deeply caring and thoughtful, but also inflexible and convinced that your way is the only path forward.

Potential blind spots:

• Integrating differing viewpoints. Your compassion and listening skills have the effect of making your colleagues feel heard. Yet they may see that your actions don’t change in response to their suggestions. Try implementing a few of their ideas.

• Operating day-to-day. Your focus on higher-level strategy and relationship building probably overshadows your interest in the details of execution. Build processes and support systems (perhaps with the aid of a Harmonizer or a Producer) that keep you accountable.

• Forging personal relationships and remaining accessible. While you care deeply about providing for others, your colleagues may see your relationships as somewhat one-dimensional — that is, more student-to-teacher than peer-to-peer. Find opportunities to share more of yourself (your background and your thinking) so they can get to know you as a person.

While you can improve in each of these areas, your natural or default style will resonate in certain work environments and fit less well in others. So you may want to seek out settings that play to your strengths, even as you work on areas for development to thrive in a broader range of contexts.

You’re likely to thrive if:

• Others in your organization feel a strong need to belong — for instance, a relatively young workforce who would benefit from your mentoring and guidance.

• You work in an environment that expects and values a clearly defined, strongly held point of view.

• Your team needs a leader who can set a clear, deliberate path forward.

• Your organization specializes in a narrow market or field that can benefit from your way of doing things.

You may struggle if:

• Your personal vision and perspective will be regularly challenged — for instance, if you join a group of established veterans who will test you as a rite of passage.

• The situation requires a diverse group of individuals who can build on one another’s ideas to be successful.

• You are asked to adopt a methodology or approach that is unfamiliar or substantially different from your preferred way.

Supplemental style: PILOT

You are a forward-looking leader who often enjoys the challenge of working in an environment that’s ambiguous, complex, and characterized by significant change. You are capable of not only generating compelling strategies but also translating them into action. And you are open to input from people you trust. Because you have clear opinions, relish challenges, and value collaborating with others, you’re comfortable and effective working in teams. At times, though, the combination of your strong drive, dynamism, and “here and now” mentality can spur you to push for changes faster and harder than your colleagues are ready for. As a result, you may be perceived as unreflective, tough to satisfy, and consistently disappointed in the performance of others. Some people may even find your intensity to be unsettling.

Potential blind spots:

• Making space for others. Your strongly held views can dominate the room and leave little space for others to freely share their thoughts and insights. Make a conscious effort to listen, and be mindful that you may be unintentionally encouraging people to defer to your perspective.

• Taking time to reflect. Your propensity to seek out new challenges may come at the expense of not learning from the past. Temper this tendency by conducting structured “after-action reviews” when you wrap up projects.

• Managing an intense personal drive. The very same energy and “always on” orientation that helps you get results can also make it hard to achieve internal balance. Get away from your work now and then to clarify your insights and perspective, even if you don’t think it’s necessary. The team will thank you, too — your intensity may be exhausting and demotivating to the people around you.

• Stepping back and letting others lead. Your natural inclination is to proactively and boldly lead projects and initiatives of your own creation. However, part of being a leader is giving people around you the chance to develop their own leadership capabilities and grow. When appropriate, carve out meaningful leadership roles for others.

• Thinking through implications for major changes. The changes you tend to be attracted to are large and influential. Your approach, however, is likely to be “ready, fire, aim.” Before you push forward on initiatives, take time to identify and address the risks.

While you can improve in each of these areas, your natural or default style will resonate in certain work environments and fit less well in others. So you may want to seek out settings that play to your strengths, even as you work on areas for development to thrive in a broader range of contexts.

You’re likely to thrive if:

• You’re in a complex or ambiguous environment that requires clear strategic and visionary leadership.

• Decisiveness and fast growth are paramount where you are — in a start-up, for example, or a turnaround situation.

• Your organization is static and needs to reengage its workforce.

• You’re given room to own and drive your projects and initiatives.

You may struggle if:

• You’re working for a micromanager or in a controlling environment.

• Your organization has conservative managers or board members who hesitate to challenge the status quo.

• Less-seasoned individuals on your team require a good deal of support and handholding.

• Your tasks must adhere to firmly established processes and protocols, as in some industrial and manufacturing environments.

• You’re not the only natural Pilot in the group, and people’s designated roles and responsibilities don’t precisely clarify “who owns what.”

Supplemental style: COMPOSER

You have the ability to blend creativity with logic to solve problems. You trust your intuition when generating ideas, and you are good at establishing clear boundaries for how and when to work with colleagues. Still, you are most comfortable when operating independently, never more so than when pursuing your own ideas and plans. Indeed, collaboration is challenging for you, and you may have difficulty “letting go” and relying on colleagues to contribute. These tendencies can make it more challenging for you to navigate your organization effectively. For example, you may struggle to get buy-in or otherwise advance the projects you’re working on.

Potential blind spots:

• Remaining open and flexible. You trust your gut so much that you may inadvertently crowd out others’ ideas with your own. Be deliberate about soliciting input — the additional brainpower can help you make your good ideas even better.

• Gaining buy-in. Your tendency to go at it alone comes with the risk that people around you won’t fully understand your ideas. By sharing your thinking as it develops (with your bosses and subordinates), you’ll be more likely to gain their support, particularly if your ideas reflect and incorporate their perspectives.

• Communicating with patience and clarity. Because much of your thinking and reasoning is internal, what is obvious to you (because you’ve already worked it out) may be brand-new or confusing to others. So you may need to backtrack and guide others through your thought process as you convey your ideas. Try to be patient and openly field questions; being abrupt might convey to others that you doubt their intelligence if they don’t immediately get what you’re saying.

• Team-building. You tend to focus on ideas and place a high value on independent thinking. Consequently, some of the more relational or emotional aspects of team building that others value highly may strike you as unnecessary or distracting. Partnering with a more relationally focused leader (such as a Collaborator or an Energizer) from time to time could help you improve the overall productivity and satisfaction of your team members.

• Being mindful of the grand scheme. Your independent streak could mask the fact that you have taken a narrow view of the problem at hand. Step back and look at the whole picture to better anticipate the short- and long-term consequences of your solutions or interventions.

While you can improve in each of these areas, your natural or default style will resonate in certain work environments and fit less well in others. So you may want to seek out settings that play to your strengths, even as you work on areas for development to thrive in a broader range of contexts.

You’re likely to thrive if:

• You have direct control over projects and timetables.

• Your circumstances require speedy and agile — yet thoughtful and decisive — problem solving, such as analyzing and responding quickly to new market data or research.

• Independence is valued in your organization, as it is in many research, legal, and creative settings.

• Building relationships isn’t central to your work (this is sometimes the case in IT, R&D, or engineering).

You may struggle if:

• You’re in an environment that calls for significant collaboration (for example, a cross-functional product team that relies on group problem solving).

• People in your company are typically influenced more by relationships and emotions than by ideas.

• Projects need extensive legal or medical review, and a lot of iteration, as they do in compliance and other “high-touch” environments.
