operant conditioning and superstitions 2

LASA 1—Operant Conditioning and Superstitions

Many people believe that superstitions are absolutely true. This often causes them to believe and act in ways that are out of the norm either to avoid a negative outcome or to bring about a positive outcome. However, the origins of all superstitions lie in operant conditioning (for example, wearing the same shirt worn during a victory game to all future games in order to ensure victory).

In this assignment, you will examine the process by which operant conditioning can lead to the formation of a superstition.

Using the module readings, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, research the development of operant conditioning and its basic principles. Then, address the following:

  • Describe the historical antecedents of operant conditioning. What factors led to the rise of operant conditioning?
  • Describe the principles/concepts which can be applied to explain the process by which operant conditioning can lead to the development and maintenance of superstitions.
  • Brainstorm to come up with a number of superstitions you may have heard or read about. Using your knowledge and vocabulary of operant conditioning, choose one of these superstitions. Then, describe in detail, the thinking processes involved that resulted in the acquisition and perpetuation of this irrational belief.
  • Describe a specific aspect of the operant conditioning process that leads to these beliefs becoming so deeply ingrained and long standing in nature.
  • Explain whether a person can ever be rid of superstitions. What methods can be used to help such a person?
  • Interview a family member or friend to discover a superstition that he or she believes in. Explain the nature of the event that led to the formation of this superstition. Does this information fit with your understanding of how the operant conditioning process results in the development of superstitions? Why or why not?

Write a 3–4-page paper in Word format. The paper should be double-spaced and in 12 point, Times New Roman font with regular one-inch margins and free of typographical and grammatical errors. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Be sure to include a title page and a reference page.

comparison of psychological and physical health 3

Comparison of Psychological and Physical Health

One in three people in the United States are reported to have some diagnosable psychological disorder.  This means each one of us either has a family member or close friend who has a psychological disorder.  You have all also undoubtedly had experience with friends or family members who have had medical illnesses.  Please respond to the following questions.

  1. How are patients with psychological disorders treated differently than are patients with medical illnesses?
  2. Visitation by non-family members is considered a positive support action that is encouraged and appreciated when we have a close friend in a medical hospital.  Would similar support be sought if the family member was in a mental hospital?  Discuss your thoughts on this subject.
  3. This next section will require some online research.  Do medical hospitals have the same levels of support staff that mental hospitals have?  How much are medical nurses paid?  What is the ratio of patients to nurses?  How much are mental health workers paid?  What is the ratio of mental patients to mental health workers?  Make sure you include the URLs for the websites you used to conduct your research.  Discuss your findings.  Please make sure that you use your own words, your paper will go to Turnitin before it comes to me.

Your paper should be at least 500 words.

Assignment 1. Linear Programming Case Study

Your instructor will assign a linear programming project for this assignment according to the following specifications.

It will be a problem with at least three (3) constraints and at least two (2) decision variables. The problem will be bounded and feasible. It will also have a single optimum solution (in other words, it won’t have alternate optimal solutions). The problem will also include a component that involves sensitivity analysis and the use of the shadow price.

You will be turning in two (2) deliverables, a short writeup of the project and the spreadsheet showing your work.

Writeup.

Your writeup should introduce your solution to the project by describing the problem. Correctly identify what type of problem this is. For example, you should note if the problem is a maximization or minimization problem, as well as identify the resources that constrain the solution. Identify each variable and explain the criteria involved in setting up the model. This should be encapsulated in one (1) or two (2) succinct paragraphs.

After the introductory paragraph, write out the L.P. model for the problem. Include the objective function and all constraints, including any non-negativity constraints. Then, you should present the optimal solution, based on your work in Excel. Explain what the results mean.

Finally, write a paragraph addressing the part of the problem pertaining to sensitivity analysis and shadow price.

Excel.

As previously noted, please set up your problem in Excel and find the solution using Solver. Clearly label the cells in your spreadsheet. You will turn in the entire spreadsheet, showing the setup of the model, and the results.

history 17

CONCLUSION

Crime problems in public housing sites have a reputation for being more intractable than problems in other high crime places. High-rise public housing sites typically are located in poor neighborhoods with high crime rates (Collins et al. 1998; Skogan and Annan 1994 129–30). Residents generally are older and poor; the non-elderly residents are disproportionately single with children and are unemployed. Skogan and Annan (1994) suggest that “residents often lack the capacity to defend themselves, be it against predators, gangs looking for revenge, or drug dealers engaged in turf wars or intimidation” (1994:130; also see Popkin et al. 1997). Many policy makers believe that only hard-core policing tactics (e.g., arrests, sweeps) such as those which characterize the “War on Drugs” can reduce the significant crime in public housing sites. Program evaluators report very few interventions that seem to make a lasting change.

Our evaluation of a problem-oriented policing program implemented in six of the most crime-ridden public housing sites in Jersey City challenges the notion that public housing sites are the last bastion of program resistance. Our research shows that different types of tactics and large quantities of problem-oriented policing activities, performed collectively by site teams comprising police, public housing officers, and social service liaison officers, can significantly reduce serious crime. We found that reductions in calls for service for serious crime could be attributed to the number of problem-oriented policing activities implemented in a site. This was particularly true of the site teams at Gladstone and at Brighton.

We also found that social structural factors such as percentage unemployed, percentage receiving TANF, and percentage single-headed households did not exhibit strong relationships to the changes over time in calls for service. Our two most successful sites— Brighton and Gladstone—were quite different in social and physical structure.

Our research has several important methodological and policy implications, and we offer some general insights into the growing literature on problem-oriented and community-oriented policing. The problem-oriented policing program implemented in the Jersey City public housing sites comprised a wide array of responses: CPTED (e.g., lighting), situational crime prevention (e.g., pay phones accommodating outgoing calls only), civil remedies (e.g., evictions and special leaseholder provisions), traditional policing (e.g., sweeps, arrests,

CHAPTER 10

surveillances), treatment (e.g., drug treatment and alcohol counseling), and informal social control (e.g., the stability of CSOs assigned to individual housing sites). We found that at Gladstone and Brighton, where the level of problem-oriented policing activity predicted the level of crime, more police-initiated strategies were implemented than at those sites which relied more heavily on public housing or social service responses. This is not to say that traditional policing tactics are more effective, but that the coercive authority of the police in a problem-oriented policing program is important for bringing about change (also see Green 1996). Therefore, we conclude that sworn officers must take an active, high-profile role in problem solving on a team in order to cause change.

Finally, our research offers some important measurement and methodological insights. We systematically measured the process of problem-oriented policing and carefully integrated process analysis with our impact assessment. We documented the extent of scanning, we examined the types of analysis conducted on a defined problem, we measured the quantity and quality of problem-solving responses, and we recorded efforts to assess the impact of problem-oriented policing tactics. This careful attention to the process analysis was integral to understanding how problem-oriented policing programs succeed (or flounder) in public housing sites. Moreover, by using a mixed model we were able to distinguish the relative influences of problem-oriented policing activities across the six sites in our study. This method provided us with an innovative approach to comparing and contrasting the factors that constrain or enhance the control of crime in public housing sites.

Article Summary & Analysis

Problem Oriented Policing is a strategy to address a specific crime problem within a neighborhood or community, and a direct response by law enforcement to gain trust and cooperation between neighborhood or community residents in order to work together to solve the crime problem. The strategy involves a local response to crime, with open communication and a concerted effort by all those impacted by the crime problem to find effective solutions. With citizens working together with local law enforcement, solidarity can be achieved with neighbors looking out for each other and the community as a whole.

Section 10.1 Example of How Police or Other Law Enforcement …

CHAPTER 10

This article reports on the Problem Oriented Policing (POP) strategy used in Jersey City, New Jersey, in an effort to reduce the amount of serious crime occurring at six public housing sites. The Jersey City Police Department and the Jersey City Housing Authority, along with tenants of the six housing sites, created teams to work together using the POP model, in an effort to reduce drug and violent crime. The teams worked during a one-year intervention phase (May 1995–May 1996). Each team was responsible for identifying areas of consistent serious crime, reporting the POP measures taken within these areas, and evaluating the effectiveness of those measures (Mazerolle, Ready, Terrill, & Waring, 2000).

The authors evaluated three questions: 1) what was the effect of the POP program on serious crime both across and within the housing sites? 2) what types of problem-solving responses were effective in reducing serious crime? and 3) were there differences in the effectiveness of POP across different categories of crime? The evaluation was based on the assumption that public housing sites are different, and that a POP strategy should include a mix of carefully selected responses that incorporate those differences (Mazerolle, et al., 2000).

The evaluation included an assessment of POP activities undertaken by the site teams, with progress being measured every two weeks. During the evaluation period, 602 POP activities were assigned, with 364 being completed, 144 ongoing throughout the year, and 94 abandoned or forgotten. Citizen calls for police service were also evaluated for a two-and-a-half year period, which included the evaluation period. The purpose of evaluating the calls for service was to determine whether the POP strategies and activities occurring at each of the housing sites resulted in more citizens willing to contact police in regard to criminal activity. The calls for service were evaluated across sites (comparing the six sites) as well as within the sites, which included an analysis of the various types of calls (i.e., what crime was being alleged by the caller in what area of the housing site) (Mazerolle, et al., 2000).

The results indicate that calls for service were positively related to the number of POP activities occurring at the housing site. In other words, as the number of POP activities increased at a site, the number of calls for service for serious crime increased. In addition, the results showed that different POP strategies and large amounts of POP activities significantly reduced serious crime in the housing sites (Mazerolle, et al., 2000).

Critical Thinking Questions

  1. What makes the Problem Oriented Policing model work in this type of environment?
  2. What could the police officers working within these public housing sites do to provide better communication and services to the residents?
  3. Do you think the approach taken in these six housing sites could be used in other similar residential areas in other parts of the county? Why or why not?
  4. How does the Problem Oriented Policing model work to create a just society, or in this case, increase social networking among residents and police officers?
  5. If you were a police officer working in a public housing site, would you use the Problem Oriented Policing model as described in the article? Why or why not?

Rewrite Comments With Correct English Construction and Correct Grammar

Hi, I need help. I need to write 3 comments on my classmates speeches. Each needs to be around 100 words.

Can you correct my writing like grammer and reprasing and rewrite some of the comments so I have approx 100 words per comment.

Below you will find my written comments.

____________

When Brian presented a Xbox, during his speech his posture seemed a lil bit stiff to me., because he was holding his hands during the whole speech behind his back. He did a good start, where he catched the audience attention with his good research on the statistic about games. The maintained a good eye contact and he was speaking very fluently, although quite to fast. During the speech he started to forget things and started to make those forgetful face expressions. He should have used notes for the speech, which would have been very helpful during the speech .

James artificial item was a computer. The opening question was very good develop. His speech was freely spoken, he kept good eye contact with the audience, he seemed very secure and was focused on the class. I liked his hand movements which made him look very calm. His conclusion was to short, he should have worked more on it. The speech was a bit to long, James examples where to long, he should have cut them shorter.

Catrine speech about horses was very well explained and detail oriented. Unfortunately at the beginning there was no free speaking at all, she was reading the most of the first part of the speech from her paper and sometimes the freely spoken part sounded like she memorized it. Overall she didn’t seem nervous and I enjoyed listen to her speech.

fair shares

Fair Shares

The Center City Anuraphilic (frog lovers) society has fallen on hard times. Abraham, Bobby and Charlene are the only remaining members and each feels equally entitled to take possession of the society’s collection of live rare tropical frogs. The decision is made to use the method of sealed bids and fair shares to decide who will take possession of the entire collection and how much will be paid in compensation to the other members.

Abraham unseals his estimate of the value of the collection at $12,000.00. Bobby’s estimate of the value of the collection is $6,000.00. Charlene values the collection at $9,000.00.

  • Who receives the collection of frogs?
  • What is each person’s fair share of the monetary value of the collection?
  • Why is the monetary amount of each fair share different?
  • How much money is owed to each of the two people who do not “win” the collection of frogs?
  • In your opinion how “Fair” is the process described above?

Now pretending for a moment that you like frogs, we will insert you into the situation under special circumstances. Despite (or perhaps because of) your love of all things amphibious, you currently lack the funds to pay each of the others their probable fair share. You will not receive the collection, but wish to receive as much money as possible. You have no knowledge of the amounts in each of the sealed bids, but strongly suspect that Abraham will bid between $10,000.00 and $12,000.00.

  • Given that you cannot afford to “win” the process, describe how you will go about deciding what to put down for your own estimate of the value of the collection.

Problem Identification and Agenda Setting

Examine and evaluate the problem identification and agenda setting stages of the policy process in this week’s required reading assignment. Discuss the process whereby a problem ultimately ends up on an agenda to be discussed. Then, discuss the agenda setting process as it relates to education; how it came to be identified as a problem and what led to its gaining enough attention so as to bring it to an agenda. Who was involved and what were their roles?

Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Support your points with scholarly references, appropriate citations, and full references at the conclusion of your post. Cite your sources in APA format.

foundations of a compensation strategy

Must be original, no plagiarism. Must have references and be marked in the body of the work. No Wikipedia.

The most effective compensation strategy is one that develops a clear link between the following components:

·  Job Description (i.e., work that an employee is expected to perform).

·  Performance Evaluation (i.e., work that the employee has performed).

·  External Salary Survey and Internal Salary Comparison (i.e., pay provided to each employee).

Examine the interrelationship between these three components by describing the purpose of each component and how it affects the others. Then explain how all three components would be used to determine the compensation for an employee. Your examination should include a salary evaluation for a position you are familiar with (Administrative Assistant, Human Resource Manager, Maintenance Worker, etc). The salary evaluation should give results for each of the three components and detail how pay is finally determined for this position based on the three components.
Example of the salary evaluation portion of your analysis:

Purchasing Manager.

Primary functions from the Job Description: To plan, direct, and coordinate the activities of buyers, purchasing officers, and related workers involved in purchasing materials, products and services.
Organizational performance evaluation system:

·  Outstanding – 6% Increase

·  Exceeds expectations – 4% Increase

·  Meets expectations – 2% Increase

·  Does not meet expectations – No Increase

External Salary Survey: (salary survey, which you can typically obtain online) Monthly salary range at $4,300 – $5,200.

Internal Salary Comparison: (the relationship of this position to similar positions in your organization) Position is similar to Accounting Manager, and should be paid within the same monthly salary range of $4,400 – $4,900.

Submit your analysis in a two- to three-page paper formatted to proper APA 6th Edition specifications. Include a minimum of two scholarly references to support your analysis.

Please review this grading rubic to assure all aspects of the paper have been met. week 3 grading rubic.docx

Using actual financial results for the recently completed year and a set of assumptions, forecast proposed parent company financial results for the upcoming year assuming the acquisition is not attempted.

Develop a set of revised, forecasted, separate financial statements for the parent company that reflect the proposed acquisition.

Prepare a pro forma consolidation worksheet for the parent company and its proposed subsidiary.

Perform ratio analysis based on (1) the separate financial statements and (2) the consolidated financial statements.

Articulate findings, conclusions, and a recommendation in a memorandum to the chairperson of the parent company’s acquisition committee.

Overview

The Course Project is to be done in teams that will be assigned by the instructor during Week 1 of the course to solve a Case Study, which is listed below. The team will work together in private discussions assigned by the instructor and located in letter-designated areas (A, B, …)included in the Team Café link just below Week 8.

There are three threads in each letter group that correspond to the three required milestones.

Milestone 1—Required 1—due Week 3 (30 points)

Milestone 2—Required 2 and 3—due Week 5 (70 points)

Milestone 3—Required 4 and 5—due Week 6 (50 points)

The team will choose a leader to be responsible for posting the team’s document(s) to that person’s Dropbox for the appropriate week. In addition to the private Discussion areas, teams have private Doc Sharing and e-mail to facilitate project activities. Only one team submission is to be made; each person does not submit his or her own milestone.

Please note: Any communication that occurs outside the Team Café will not be visible to me, thus it will not earn you points towards the individual participation component of each milestone’s grade.

Although this is a group project, it is required that each team member play a meaningful role in completing each milestone. You should review the grading rubric found at the bottom of the page, because it will be used to grade each submission and individual participation component of each milestone. Each individual will receive a separate grade dependent on both the submission and his or her participation. Note also that participation in the team thread does not count toward your required weekly discussion logins and posts, but it will count toward your individual team grade.

Once you have been assigned to a group, go to the e-mail tool and note the group number/name in the address box. If you click on the group, then “add,” you will see the names of your group members in the box. Go ahead and send an e-mail to say hello to your teammates and tell them a bit about yourself.

At the bottom of the left side of your screen, under the Week 8 tab, you will find a Team Café, and if you click on this you will see a Discussion area for your team. This Discussion area will be open for the entire duration of the course, so I highly recommend that you keep your conversation with your team in this area. You will not be inundated with e-mails during the course, and you will not have to archive these to keep track of who is doing what.

Teams are to begin working on Milestone 1 using your team thread in Team Café—see the Course Project Guidelines in Doc Sharing for specifics. Also, please let me know if you have not heard from a member of your group early in the course.

Good luck and enjoy!

Situation

Parent Inc. is contemplating a tender offer to acquire 80% of Subsidiary Corporation’s common stock. Subsidiary’s shares are currently quoted on the New York Stock Exchange at $85 per share. In order to have a reasonable chance of the tender offer attracting 80% of Subsidiary’s stock, Parent believes it will have to offer at least $105 per share. If the tender offer is made and is successful, the purchase will be consummated on January 1, 2013.

A typical part of the planning of a proposed business combination is the preparation of projected or pro forma consolidated financial statements. As a member of Parent’s accounting group, you have been asked to prepare the pro forma 2013 consolidated financial statements for Parent and Subsidiary assuming that 80% of Subsidiary’s stock is acquired at a price of $105 per share. To support your computations, Martha Franklin, the chairperson of Parent’s acquisitions committee, has provided you with the projected 2013 financial statements for Subsidiary. (The projected financial statements for Subsidiary and several other companies were prepared earlier for the acquisition committee’s use in targeting a company for acquisition.) The projected financial statements for Subsidiary for 2013 and Parent’s actual 2012 financial statements are presented in Table 1.

Assumptions

Ms. Franklin has asked you to use the assumptions below to project Parent’s 2013 financial statements.

Sales will increase by 10% in 2013.

All sales will be on account.

Accounts receivable will be 5% lower on December 31, 2013, than on December 31, 2012.

Cost of goods sold will increase by 9% in 2013.

All purchases of merchandise will be on account.

Accounts payable are expected to be $50,500 on December 31, 2013.

Inventory will be 3% higher on December 31, 2013, than on December 31, 2012.

Straight-line depreciation is used for all fixed assets.

No fixed assets will be disposed of during 2013. The annual depreciation on existing assets is $40,000 per year.

Equipment will be purchased on January 1, 2013, for $48,000 cash. The equipment will have an estimated life of 10 years, with no salvage value.

Operating expenses, other than depreciation, will increase by 14% in 2013.

All operating expenses, other than depreciation, will be paid in cash.

Parent’s income tax rate is 40%, and taxes are paid in cash in four equal payments. Payments will be made on the 15th of April, June, September, and December. For simplicity, assume taxable income equals financial reporting income before taxes.

Parent will continue the $2.50 per share annual cash dividend on its common stock.

If the tender offer is successful, Parent will finance the acquisition by issuing $170,000 of 6% nonconvertible bonds at par on January 1, 2013. The bonds would first pay interest on July 1, 2013, and would pay interest semiannually thereafter each January 1 and July 1 until maturity on January 1, 2023.

The acquisition will be accounted for as a purchase and Parent will account for the investment using the equity method. Although most of the legal work related to the acquisition will be handled by Parent’s staff attorney, direct costs to prepare and process the tender offer will total $2,000 and will be paid in cash by Parent in 2013.

As of January 1, 2013, all of Subsidiary’s assets and liabilities are fairly valued except for machinery with a book value of $8,000, an estimated fair value of $9,500, and a 5-year remaining useful life. Assume that straight-line depreciation is used to amortize any revaluation increment.

No transactions between these companies occurred prior to 2013. Regardless of whether they combine, Parent plans to buy $50,000 of merchandise from Subsidiary in 2013 and will have $3,600 of these purchases remaining in inventory on December 31, 2013. In addition, Subsidiary is expected to buy $2,400 of merchandise from Parent in 2013 and to have $495 of these purchases in inventory on December 31, 2013. Parent and Subsidiary price their products to yield a 65% and 80% markup on cost, respectively.

Parent intends to use three financial yardsticks to determine the financial attractiveness of the combination. First, Parent wishes to acquire Subsidiary Corporation only if 2013 consolidated earnings per share will be at least as high as the earnings per share Parent would report if no combination takes place. Second, Parent will consider the proposed combination unattractive if it will cause the consolidated current ratio to fall below two to one. Third, return on average stockholders’ equity must remain above 20% for the combined entity.

If the financial yardsticks described above and the nonfinancial aspects of the combination are appealing, then the tender offer will be made. On the other hand, if these objectives are not met, the acquisition will either be restructured or abandoned.

Milestones

MilestoneDueRequirements

1 (30 points) Week 3

Forecast the separate financial statements of Parent Inc. Using Ms. Franklin’s assumptions and Parent’s 2012 financial statements, prepare pro forma 2013 financial statements for Parent Inc., assuming that the acquisition is not attempted. Support your statements with appropriate work papers and journal entries. Pro forma financial statements include a statement of operation, a statement of retained earnings, a balance sheet, and a cash flow statement.

NOTE: There is a Template for Milestones 1 and 2 available for your download that is also located in Doc Sharing.

2 (70 points) Week 5

Adjust the separate financial statements of Parent Inc. to reflect the proposed acquisition. Adjust Parent’s pro forma 2013 financial statements prepared in Milestone 1 to reflect the proposed acquisition (i.e., adjust Parent’s forecasted financial statements for bond issuance, stock purchase, income from subsidiary, etc.). Support your statements with appropriate work papers and journal entries. Pro forma financial statements include a statement of operation, a statement of retained earnings, a balance sheet, and a cash flow statement.

Prepare a pro forma consolidated worksheet. Prepare a pro forma consolidation worksheet for Parent Inc. and its proposed subsidiary as of December 31, 2013. To ensure you are starting with the right numbers, use the solution provided to Milestone 1 for the adjusted pro forma 2013 financial statements of Parent Inc., and the projected 2013 financial statements of Subsidiary Corporation in Table 1. Show all consolidation adjusting entries, including minority interest entries.

NOTE: There is a Template for Milestones 1 and 2 available for your download that is also located in Doc Sharing.

3 (50 points) Week 6

Perform ratio analysis. Compute earnings per share for (1) the separate financial statements of Parent Inc. prepared in Milestone 1 and (2) the consolidated financial statements contained in the solution for the pro forma consolidation worksheet prepared in Milestone 3. Also, calculate current ratio and return on average stockholders’ equity for the separate company and consolidated financial statements.

Write a memorandum (as a Word document) to Ms. Franklin summarizing the results of your analysis, including a summary of the financial ratios you computed and your recommendation. Attach copies of both sets of pro forma financial statements of Parent Inc. and the pro forma consolidation worksheet.

Grading Rubrics

The following grading rubric will be used to determine each individual’s total grade on each project milestone. Contributory content is defined as providing input into the creation of a component, with appropriate, relevant commentary on another’s posted content or discussion on technical questions related to the requirements of each particular course milestone. Grading will occur in a two-step process. The submission itself will be graded for technical and format and appearance components as follows.

Total Points: Milestone 1 = 30; Milestone 2 = 70; Milestone 3 = 50

CriterionUnsatisfactory (less than 40% of available content points) Needs Improvement (40–69% of available content points) Meets Requirements (70–100% of available content points)

Content, Calculation, and Technical Accounting

80% of total points

Content is incomplete or omits significant requirements.

Major points are not clear and/or persuasive. Does not indicate a basic understanding of chapter concepts. Overall application of accounting theory visible but individual supporting calculations incorrect. Major adjustments are addressed but do not appear supported. Minor theoretical errors. Appropriate application of accounting theory, correct supporting calculations, appropriate journal entries

Criterion Unsatisfactory (less than 10% of available format points) Needs improvement (10–49% of available format points) Meets requirements (50–100% of available format points)

Format and Appearance

20% of total points Not submitted in appropriate format (Excel for Milestones 1 and 2, Word or Excel for Milestone 3)

No apparent attempt to format for readability. Hard to follow/determine answer. No conclusion or indication of where to find the answer/conclusion for each requirement. Not a professional submission. Data just “typed” without any organization or format. No “white space” or graphics/formatting.

Unable to clearly identify where the answer to each problem requirement is presented. Submission appropriate to present in a business or professional context. Excellent use of graphics, formatting, and labeling.

Answer to each problem requirement clearly indicated and analysis clearly displayed

Then, based upon the individual’s contribution in the Team Café consideration for the individual component of the grade will be given as follows.

NOTE: Upon review of the Team Café Discussion area, if a team member has not posted any contributory content to the project, then no points for the milestone will be earned.

Individual Participation

Six or more Contributory PostsFull individual participation credit

3–6 Contributory PostsLoss of 15–25% of available milestone points

1–3 Contributory PostsLoss of 26–50% of available milestone points

Grading example:

Group A submits the third milestone and earns 50 points based upon the actual content and presentation of the submission. Per review of the Team Café, it appears that one student, John Joe, posted only three times during the preparation of this milestone. The content of those posts was contributory. Based upon review of the actual content of his posts, John Joe can expect to earn between a 25 and 37 score for his participation in the Milestone 1 submission of Group A.

situational leadership theory and organizational leadership

Situational Leadership Theory and Organizational Leadership

As the new top-level executive of a medium-sized corporation, you have noticed that the leadership culture in the organization has been ineffective, which has lowered employee morale. To change the leadership culture you have decided to discuss this issue with all the managers and supervisors in the organization. Prior to meeting with all the managers and supervisors, you have decided that you need to develop a how-to guide on effective leadership.

In a four- to five-page paper (excluding the title and references pages), explain why situational leadership theory is useful and relevant in developing an effective leadership culture. Describe the three theories of situational leadership and what you consider to be the strengths and weaknesses of each theory when leading staff in the organizational environment.

The Psychology of Prejudice and Prejudice Reduction

This course finishes by looking at one of the oldest and more important topics in the study of influence and persuasion—the psychology of stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination. Consider, first, some definitions: Prejudice is defined as holding negative beliefs about a group and its individual members. Stereotypes, in contrast, are the beliefs people hold about a group and its individual members. Whereas prejudice is considered to be a negative attitude, stereotypes can be positive or negative. You will learn from the readings that prejudice and stereotypes can influence behavior independently of each other. For example, it is possible to hold negative stereotypes about a group and its members, but not necessarily hate or dislike them. Even people who are low in prejudice toward a group can hold negative stereotypes about the group and, under some conditions, rely on their knowledge of negative stereotypes to form an impression of a target individual. Finally, discrimination is negative behavior toward a group and its individual members. As you know, prejudiced attitudes can guide discriminatory behavior, but they may do so outside of awareness when the negative attitude is implicit. Thus, much of the study of prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination is based on what you already know about the relationship between attitudes, beliefs, and behavior. But changing intergroup biases like prejudice, stereotypes, and discrimination requires a thorough understanding of why people are biased and how they maintain their attitudes and beliefs. After you read about the causes of prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination, you will examine the different ways in which these biases can be reduced.

To prepare for this Discussion:

• Read all of Chapter 11 in the course text, Persuasion: Psychological Insights and Perspectives. As you do, think about your own prejudices and stereotypes, and also about the prejudices and stereotypes expressed by people you know.

• Think about how the text describes the process of categorization and why it might cause you to use stereotypes when you form an impression of an individual. Think about why stereotyping is useful but also harmful when you interact with someone or evaluate his or her potential. How can you avoid using stereotypes?

• Reflect on how the need to maintain a positive group identity and high self-esteem motivate people you know to harbor negative attitudes and beliefs about a group and its individual members. Can you think of a way to make prejudice less rewarding for them, or make it irrelevant to self-esteem and social identity needs, in order to reduce their biases?

• Consider whether you know anybody whose prejudice stems from pent-up, displaced aggression. Also consider whether you know anyone who grew up in an authoritarian household and, as a result, holds strong conservative beliefs and is overly submissive to authority. Think about whether it is possible to persuade them that the group they dislike is not the reason for their frustration or does not threaten their conservative beliefs.

• Think about the role that competition and perceptions of relative deprivation play in the prejudices held by people you know. Can you reduce their biases by educating them about the perceived conflict or their comparison to the disliked group?

• Consider the morality of prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination. Think about how you would react if someone pointed out that something you said violated the values of freedom and equality. Are there other ways to confront people without making them feel angry or guilty? See if you can think of recent books, films, or other media that cause people to reflect on the morality of prejudice and as a result, change their negative attitudes and beliefs about a group and its members.

• Reflect on the conditions under which intergroup contact can reduce prejudice described in Table 11.1. Does the research lead you to believe that if carefully structured, contact between groups can reduce their dislike for each other?

• Compare and contrast symbolic, aversive, and ambivalent racism. Think about what Devine’s dissociation model adds to the understanding of prejudice.

• The idea of implicit attitudes was introduced in Week 2 of the course. Think about how the study of implicit stereotypes and prejudice is related and how positive thinking and just saying no to stereotypes can change implicit prejudice.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 4 brief description of someone you know who is prejudiced against a group and its individual members. Explain the negative stereotypes and/or attitudes that this person holds toward the group and the degree to which the biases are explicit or implicit. Then, using the theories in the textbook, explain why you think this individual developed his or her biases against the group. Finally, suggest a way to reduce his or her biases.

Make a Mortgage Research

800 – 1,000 words Plus References

  • Find 5 different online mortgage lenders. such as this one (www.lendingtree.com)

  • From these 5 lenders, find the following rates, assuming the mortgage payments are made monthly:

    • 10-year (if available) for fixed-rate mortgage

    • 15-year (if available) for fixed-rate mortgage

    • 30-year for fixed-rate mortgage

  • Convert these rates into effective annual rates (EARs).

  • Discuss which rate is actually the cheapest rate.

    • What are 2 things about the sample Web site given above that could be applicable to a consumer or investor?

    • Present the rates in a table. List the quoted rate and EAR rate, the lender, and the maturity of the loan. Show your work for each calculation.

    • What is 1 mistake people make when calculating their mortgage payments? Explain your answer.

    • Based solely on the EAR, which rate is the cheapest? Does this make sense?

    • Why do the different lenders have different rates?

    • Is the difference in rates going to make a huge impact on the cost to the homebuyer? Explain your answer.
