On my unit at the hospital I work, one of the ways we use evidence based practice is by the use of interventions that reduce pain for infants and children receiving injections and/or IVs. It is strongly recommended to use age appropriate interventions prior to a painful procedure when working with children. We do that by using sucrose solution for infants and topical numbing agents like lidocaine for the older kids. On our unit we work hand in hand with child life specialist in order to reduce pain for children about to have a painful procedure done. They are there to help distract patients with the help of toys, IPad and just be there for support while nurses perform the procedure. The desired patient outcome achieved through using this approach is that more pediatric patients are cooperating with Iv’s and painful procedures because the pain is significantly reduced. By combing distraction with interventions to reduce pain prior to an IV, it has been shown to be more effective than using a single intervention.
