Astrophysics Assignment: The Virial Theorem, Fusion Energy, Opacity

1) A sudden increase in the energy generation rate in the core of a star results in a sudden increase in internal pressure. Use the virial theorem to argue that the star will remain stable (i.e. use the virial theorem to figure out the sequence of changes that will result from the sudden increase in pressure.)

2) A) Use the figure (attached) to estimate the mass of a star which generates 90% of its energy using the CNO cycle.

B) Last week we derived equations estimating the central pressure and temperature in stars. Use these to estimate the mass of a star in which radiation pressure becomes equal to gas pressure. Note: All lecture notes are attached.
